Proverbes 24
1 Ne porte pas envie aux hommes méchants, et ne désire pas leur société!
Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.
2 Car leur cœur médite la ruine, et leurs lèvres ont un langage funeste.
For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.
3 Par la sagesse une maison s'élève, et par l'intelligence elle se consolide;
Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established:
4 et par la science les chambres se remplissent de tous les biens de prix et d'agrément.
And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.
5 L'homme sage a de la force, et l'homme qui sait, gagne en vigueur.
A wise man [is] strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.
6 Car tu feras la guerre ayant pris tes mesures, et c'est le nombre des conseillers qui donne la victoire.
For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors [there is] safety.
7 Pour l'insensé la sagesse est chose trop haute; aux Portes il n'ouvre pas la bouche.
Wisdom [is] too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate.
8 Celui qui médite de faire du mal, reçoit le nom d'homme d'intrigue.
He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person.
9 La pensée de la folie, c'est le péché; et le moqueur est l'abomination des hommes.
The thought of foolishness [is] sin: and the scorner [is] an abomination to men.
10 Si tu faiblis au jour de la détresse, tes forces s'affaibliront.
[If] thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength [is] small.
11 Sauve ceux qu'on traîne à la mort; retiens ceux qui vont tomber sous les coups meurtriers!
If thou forbear to deliver [them that are] drawn unto death, and [those that are] ready to be slain;
12 Si tu dis: « Nous ne le connaissons point! » Celui qui pèse les cœurs, ne l'entendra-t-Il pas? et le Gardien de ton âme ne le saura-t-il pas? et ne rend-Il pas à chacun selon ses œuvres?
If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider [it]? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth [not] he know [it]? and shall [not] he render to [every] man according to his works?
13 Mon fils, mange le miel, car il est bon, et le rayon de miel, qui est doux à ton palais!
My son, eat thou honey, because [it is] good; and the honeycomb, [which is] sweet to thy taste:
14 Sache que telle sera la sagesse à ton âme. Si tu la trouves, il est un avenir; et ton espoir ne sera pas mis à néant.
So [shall] the knowledge of wisdom [be] unto thy soul: when thou hast found [it], then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.
15 Impie, ne dresse point d'embûches à la demeure du juste, et ne dévaste point son gîte.
Lay not wait, O wicked [man], against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place:
16 Car sept fois le juste tombe, et il se relève; mais les impies périssent dans le malheur.
For a just [man] falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.
17 Ne te réjouis pas de la chute de ton ennemi, et que ton cœur ne se délecte pas de sa ruine,
Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth:
18 de peur que l'Éternel ne le voie, et n'en ait déplaisir, et qu'il ne détourne sa colère de lui.
Lest the LORD see [it], and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.
19 Ne t'irrite point à la vue des méchants, et ne sois point jaloux des impies,
Fret not thyself because of evil [men], neither be thou envious at the wicked;
20 car le méchant n'a point d'avenir, le flambeau des impies s'éteint.
For there shall be no reward to the evil [man; ] the candle of the wicked shall be put out.
21 Crains l'Éternel, mon fils, et le roi, et ne t'associe point aux novateurs!
My son, fear thou the LORD and the king: [and] meddle not with them that are given to change:
22 car leur ruine surgit tout-à-coup, et le temps du châtiment des uns et des autres, qui le sait?
For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both?
23 Encore paroles de sages. Etre partial, quand on juge, n'est pas bien.
These [things] also [belong] to the wise. [It is] not good to have respect of persons in judgment.
24 Quiconque dit au coupable: Tu es innocent! encourt la malédiction des peuples, et le courroux des nations.
He that saith unto the wicked, Thou [art] righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him:
25 Mais ceux qui osent punir, s'en trouvent bien, et obtiennent le bonheur comme bénédiction.
But to them that rebuke [him] shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them.
26 Il donne un baiser sur les lèvres, celui qui répond pertinemment.
[Every man] shall kiss [his] lips that giveth a right answer.
27 Soigne au dehors tes affaires, et mets en bon état ton champ; alors tu peux bâtir ta maison.
Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.
28 Ne témoigne pas à la légère contre ton prochain; et de tes lèvres voudrais-tu tromper?
Be not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and deceive [not] with thy lips.
29 Ne dis pas: Ce qu'il m'a fait, je le lui ferai, je rendrai à chacun selon ses œuvres.
Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.
30 Près du champ du paresseux je passais, et près de la vigne de l'homme privé de sens;
I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;
31 et voici, le chardon y poussait partout, et des orties en couvraient le sol, et son mur de pierres s'était écroulé.
And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, [and] nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.
32 Et je regardai, et fis attention; je vis, et en tirai une leçon:
Then I saw, [and] considered [it] well: I looked upon [it, and] received instruction.
33 « Un peu dormir, un peu sommeiller, un peu croiser les bras en étant couché! »
[Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
34 Ainsi, la pauvreté fondra sur toi, comme un larron, et l'indigence, comme un homme portant le bouclier.
So shall thy poverty come [as] one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.
