Luc 14
1 Et il advint, qu'étant entré dans la maison de l'un des chefs des pharisiens, un jour de sabbat, pour prendre un repas, ils étaient occupés à l'épier.
And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath, that they watched him.
2 Et voici, il y avait devant lui un homme hydropique;
And behold, there was a certain man before him who had the dropsy.
3 et Jésus prenant la parole dit aux légistes et aux pharisiens: « Est-il permis, oui ou non, d'opérer une guérison le jour du sabbat? »
And Jesus answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath?
4 Mais ils se turent; et l'ayant pris à lui, il le guérit et le congédia;
And they held their peace. And he took [him] and healed him, and let him go;
5 et il leur dit: « Lequel de vous, si son fils ou son bœuf tombe dans un puits, ne l'en retirera aussitôt le jour du sabbat? »
And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not forthwith pull him out on the sabbath?
6 Et ils ne purent de leur côté répondre à cela.
And they could not answer him again to these things.
7 Or il adressait aux conviés une parabole, après avoir remarqué comment ils choisissaient les premières places, en leur disant:
And he put forth a parable to those who were invited, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying to them,
8 « Lorsque tu auras été convié par quelqu'un à des noces, ne t'installe pas à la première place, de peur qu'un plus noble que toi n'ait été convié par lui,
When thou art invited by any [man] to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room, lest a more honorable man than thou be invited by him;
9 et que celui qui vous a conviés l'un et l'autre ne te dise: « Fais place à celui-ci, » et alors tu te mettras avec honte à occuper la dernière place.
And he that invited thee and him, shall come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
10 Mais quand tu auras été convié, va t'établir à la dernière place, afin que, lorsque celui qui t'a convié sera venu, il te dise: « Ami, monte plus haut. » Alors tu seras honoré en présence de tous ceux qui sont à table avec toi.
But when thou art invited, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that invited thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have honor in the presence of them that sit at table with thee.
11 Car quiconque s'élève lui-même sera abaissé et celui qui s'abaisse lui-même sera élevé. »
For whoever exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
12 Or il disait aussi à celui qui l'avait convié: « Quand tu donnes une collation ou un repas, n'invite ni tes amis, ni tes frères, ni tes parents, ni de riches voisins, de peur qu'eux aussi ne t'invitent à leur tour, et qu'on ne te rende la pareille.
Then said he also to him that invited him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor [thy] rich neighbors; lest they also invite thee again, and a recompense be made thee.
13 Mais quand tu donnes un festin, invite les pauvres, les estropiés les boiteux, les aveugles,
But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
14 et tu seras heureux de ce qu'ils ne peuvent te rendre la pareille, car elle te sera rendue lors de la résurrection des justes. »
And thou shalt be blessed: for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
15 Mais après avoir entendu cela l'un des conviés lui dit: « Heureux quiconque prendra un repas dans le royaume de Dieu! »
And when one of them that sat at table with him heard these things, he said to him, Blessed [is] he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
16 Mais il lui dit: « Un homme donnait un grand repas, et il invita plusieurs personnes,
Then said he to him, A certain man made a great supper, and invited many:
17 et il envoya son esclave à l'heure du repas dire aux conviés: « Venez, car c'est déjà prêt. »
And sent his servant at supper-time, to say to them that were invited, Come, for all things are now ready.
18 Et tous, d'un même accord, se mirent à s'excuser. Le premier lui dit: « J'ai acheté un champ, et je suis obligé d'aller le visiter; je te prie, veuille m'excuser. »
And they all with one [consent] began to make excuse. The first said to him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
19 Et un autre dit: « J'ai acheté cinq paires de bœufs, et je vais les essayer; je te prie, veuille m'excuser. »
And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.
20 Et un autre dit: « J'ai pris femme, et à cause de cela je ne puis pas aller. »
And another said, I have married a wife: and therefore I cannot come.
21 Et l'esclave vint rapporter cela à son maître. Alors le chef de famille irrité dit à son esclave: « Va promptement dans les rues et les ruelles de la ville, et amène ici les pauvres, et les estropiés, et les aveugles et les boiteux. »
So that servant came, and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry, said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.
22 Et l'esclave dit: « Seigneur, ce que tu as ordonné est fait, et il y a encore de la place. »
And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
23 Et le maître dit à l'esclave: « Va le long des chemins et des clôtures, et contrains d'entrer afin que la maison soit pleine;
And the lord said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel [them] to come in, that my house may be filled.
24 je vous déclare en effet qu'aucun de ces hommes que j'avais conviés ne goûtera de mon repas. »
For I say to you, that none of those men who were invited, shall taste my supper.
25 Or une foule nombreuse cheminait avec lui, et s'étant retourné il leur dit:
And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said to them,
26 « Si quelqu'un vient à moi et ne hait pas son propre père, et sa mère, et sa femme, et ses enfants, et ses frères, et ses sœurs, et en outre encore sa propre vie, il ne peut pas être mon disciple.
If any [man] cometh to me, and hateth not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
27 Quiconque donc ne porte pas sa propre croix et ne marche pas derrière moi ne peut pas être mon disciple.
And whoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
28 Quel est en effet celui d'entre vous qui, voulant bâtir une tour, ne s'asseye d'abord pour calculer la dépense et voir s'il a de quoi en venir à bout?
For which of you intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he hath [sufficient] to finish [it]?
29 De peur que, si, après avoir posé la fondation, il ne peut achever, tous les spectateurs ne se mettent à le bafouer, en disant:
Lest perhaps after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish [it], all that behold [it] begin to mock him,
30 « Cet homme a commencé à bâtir et il n'a pu achever! »
Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
31 Ou bien quel est le roi qui, se mettant en marche pour faire la guerre à un autre roi, ne s'asseye d'abord afin de délibérer s'il peut avec dix mille hommes affronter celui qui s'avance contre lui avec vingt mille?
Or what king going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
32 Autrement, pendant que l'autre est encore éloigné, il lui envoie une ambassade pour demander la paix.
Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an embassy, and desireth conditions of peace.
33 Ainsi donc quiconque d'entre vous ne renonce pas à tout ce qu'il possède ne peut être mon disciple.
So likewise, whoever he is of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
34 Le sel est donc bon; mais si le sel même s'est affadi, avec quoi l'assaisonnera-t-on?
Salt [is] good: but if the salt hath lost its savor, with what shall it be seasoned?
35 Il n'est bon ni pour la terre ni pour le fumier; on le jettera dehors. Que celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre entende.
It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill, [but] men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
