Juges 6
1 Et les enfants d'Israël firent ce qui déplaît à l'Éternel; c'est pourquoi l'Éternel les livra aux mains des Madianites pendant sept ans.
And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.
2 Et la main de Madian pesa fortement sur Israël. Pour leur sûreté contre Madian, les enfants d'Israël disposèrent pour eux les ravins des montagnes, les cavernes et les hauteurs fortes.
And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: [and] because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which [are] in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.
3 Or il arrivait que quand les Israélites avaient fait les semailles, les Madianites, les Amalécites et les enfants de l'Orient s'avançaient et marchaient contre eux.
And [so] it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;
4 Et ils dressaient leur camp en face d'eux, et détruisaient tous les produits du sol jusque vers Gaza, et ne laissaient en Israël ni subsistances, ni brebis, ni bœufs, ni ânes.
And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.
5 Car eux-mêmes ils venaient avec leurs troupeaux et leurs tentes, arrivant en masse comme des sauterelles innombrables, aussi bien que leurs chameaux, ils envahissaient le pays pour le saccager.
For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; [for] both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.
6 Et Israël fut extrêmement affaibli par Madian, alors les enfants d'Israël crièrent vers l'Éternel.
And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.
7 Et lorsque les enfants d'Israël crièrent vers l'Éternel, au sujet de Madian,
And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites,
8 l'Éternel envoya un prophète aux enfants d'Israël, et il leur dit: Ainsi parle l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël: Je vous ai amenés de l'Egypte et retirés de la maison de servitude,
That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;
9 et je vous ai arrachés des mains des Égyptiens et des mains de tous vos oppresseurs, que j'ai chassés devant vous, et je vous ai donné leur pays.
And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land;
10 Et je vous ai dit: Moi, l'Éternel, je suis votre Dieu; ne craignez pas les dieux des Amoréens dans le pays desquels vous vous établissez. Mais vous n'avez pas écouté ma voix.
And I said unto you, I [am] the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.
11 Ensuite vint un Ange de l'Éternel qui s'assit sous le térébinthe d'Ophra appartenant à Joas de la maison de Abi-Ezer. Et Gédéon, son fils, battait du froment au pressoir pour le mettre à l'abri des Madianites.
And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which [was] in Ophrah, that [pertained] unto Joash the Abi-ezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide [it] from the Midianites.
12 Et l'Ange de l'Éternel lui apparut et lui dit: L'Éternel est avec toi, héros guerrier!
And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD [is] with thee, thou mighty man of valour.
13 Et Gédéon lui dit: Pardonne! mon Seigneur. Si l'Éternel est avec nous, pourquoi toutes ces choses nous sont-elles advenues? Et où sont tous Ses miracles que nous ont racontés nos pères en disant: L'Éternel ne nous a-t-Il pas retirés de l'Egypte? Eh bien! l'Éternel nous a abandonnés et nous a livrés aux mains des Madianites.
And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where [be] all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
14 Et l'Éternel s'adressa à lui et lui dit: Va avec cette force que tu as, et délivre Israël de la main de Madian. Voici, je te donne mission.
And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?
15 Et il Lui dit: Pardonne, mon Seigneur! Avec quoi délivrerais-je Israël? Voici, ma famille est la plus faible de Manassé, et je suis le plus petit de la maison de mon père.
And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family [is] poor in Manasseh, and I [am] the least in my father’s house.
16 Et l'Éternel lui dit: Oui, je serai avec toi et tu déferas les Madianites comme un seul homme.
And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.
17 Et il Lui dit: Si je puis avoir trouvé grâce à tes yeux, opère un signe qui me prouve que c'est Toi qui me parles.
And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.
18 Consens à ne pas quitter ce lieu jusqu'à que je te rejoigne et que j'apporte mon offrande et la dépose devant Toi. Et Il lui dit: Je resterai jusqu'à ton retour.
Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set [it] before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.
19 Et Gédéon entra et apprêta un chevreau et un épha de farine sans levain; il mit la chair dans la corbeille et le jus dans le vase à cuire; puis il l'apporta vers Lui sous le térébinthe, et le Lui offrit.
And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought [it] out unto him under the oak, and presented [it].
20 Et l'Ange de Dieu lui dit: Prends la chair et les azymes et pose-les sur ce rocher-ci, et verse le jus. Et il fit ainsi.
And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay [them] upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.
21 Et l'Ange de l'Éternel présentant le bout du bâton qu'il avait à la main, toucha la chair et les azymes, et le feu jaillit du rocher, et consuma la chair et les azymes, et l'Ange de l'Éternel disparut.
Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that [was] in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.
22 Alors Gédéon vit que c'était un ange de l'Éternel, et Gédéon dit: Ah! Seigneur, Éternel… car puisque j'ai vu un ange de l'Éternel face à face…
And when Gideon perceived that he [was] an angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord GOD! for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face.
23 Et l'Éternel lui dit: Salut pour toi! n'aie pas peur! tu ne mourras pas.
And the LORD said unto him, Peace [be] unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.
24 Alors Gédéon éleva là un autel à l'Éternel, et il l'appela Jehova-Schalom (Éternel Salut). Il subsiste encore aujourd'hui à Ophra des Abi-Ezrites.
Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it [is] yet in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.
25 Et pendant la nuit même l'Éternel lui dit: Prends le jeune taureau de ton père, et un second taureau de sept ans, et démolis l'autel de Baal, qui est à ton père et coupe l'Aschère qui est auprès.
And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that [is] by it:
26 Puis élève un autel à l'Éternel, ton Dieu, sur le sommet de ce rocher avec la pile du bûcher, et prends le second taureau, et offre un holocauste avec le bois de l'Aschère que tu auras coupée.
And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.
27 Alors Gédéon prit dix hommes parmi ses serviteurs et exécuta ce que l'Éternel lui avait dit. Et comme il craignait de le faire de jour à la vue de la maison de son père et des gens de la ville, il le fit de nuit.
Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and [so] it was, because he feared his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do [it] by day, that he did [it] by night.
28 Et lorsque les gens de la ville se levèrent le matin, voilà que l'autel de Baal était en ruine, et l'Aschère qui l'avoisinait, coupée, et le second taureau placé comme holocauste sur l'autel construit.
And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that [was] by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar [that was] built.
29 Et ils se dirent l'un à l'autre: Qui a fait cela? Et ils firent des recherches et des perquisitions et dirent: C'est Gédéon, fils de Joas, qui l'a fait.
And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.
30 Alors les gens de la ville dirent à Joas: Livre ton fils et qu'il meure! car il a détruit l'autel de Baal et coupé l'Aschère avoisinante.
Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that [was] by it.
31 Et Joas dit à tous ceux qui l'entouraient: Voulez-vous prendre parti pour Baal ou voulez-vous le sauver? Celui qui prendra parti pour Baal sera mis à mort d'ici à demain. S'il est dieu, il peut se venger lui-même de la destruction de son autel.
And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst [it is yet] morning: if he [be] a god, let him plead for himself, because [one] hath cast down his altar.
32 Et ce jour-là on l'appela Jérubbaal, en disant: Que Baal le prenne à partie pour avoir démoli son autel.
Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.
33 Cependant Madian entier, et Amalek, et les enfants de l'Orient, se réunirent tous et passèrent [le Jourdain] et campèrent dans la vallée de Jizréel.
Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.
34 Et l'Esprit de l'Éternel revêtit Gédéon, et il sonna de la trompette et les Abi-Ezrites vinrent se mettre sous sa conduite.
But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abi-ezer was gathered after him.
35 Et il dépêcha des messagers dans tout Manassé, et Manassé aussi vint se mettre sous sa conduite; et il dépêcha des messagers dans Asser, dans Zabulon et dans Nephthali, et ils se mirent en marche à sa rencontre.
And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.
36 Alors Gédéon dit à Dieu: Si tu veux délivrer Israël par mon bras, ainsi que tu l'as dit,
And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,
37 voici j'étendrai la toison de laine sur l'aire; si la toison seule reçoit la rosée, et que tout le sol d'alentour reste sec, alors je comprendrai que tu veux délivrer Israël par mon bras, ainsi que tu l'as dit.
Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; [and] if the dew be on the fleece only, and [it be] dry upon all the earth [beside], then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.
38 Et ainsi arriva. Et le lendemain à son lever il pressa la toison et il en exprima toute une jatte d'eau.
And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.
39 Et Gédéon dit à Dieu: Que ta colère ne s'allume pas contre moi, de ce que je vais parler cette fois seulement: je voudrais encore une seule fois faire l'épreuve avec la toison. Que la toison seule donc reste sèche et que la rosée couvre tout le sol.
And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.
40 Et la nuit même Dieu opéra la chose, et la toison seule resta sèche, tandis que la rosée couvrit tout le sol.
And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
