Juges 21
1 Or les hommes d'Israël avaient fait ce serment à Mitspa: Aucun de nous ne donnera sa fille en mariage à un Benjaminite.
Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter to Benjamin for a wife.
2 Et le peuple vint à Béthel où il resta jusqu'au soir en la présence de Dieu, et ils élevèrent leurs sanglots, et tout en pleurs firent une grande lamentation.
And the people came to the house of God, and abode there till evening before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept bitterly;
3 Et ils disaient: Pourquoi faut-il, Éternel, Dieu d'Israël en Israël, qu'aujourd'hui toute une Tribu manque en Israël?
And said, O LORD God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel?
4 Et le lendemain dès le matin le peuple fut debout, et ils bâtirent là un autel et offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices pacifiques.
And it came to pass on the next morning, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.
5 Et les enfants d'Israël dirent: Qui est-ce qui dans toutes les Tribus d'Israël ne s'est pas rendu à l'Assemblée auprès de l'Éternel? Car un grand serment a été prononcé contre celui qui ne se présenterait pas devant l'Éternel à Mitspa; on a dit: Il sera mis à mort.
And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation to the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
6 Et les enfants d'Israël s'affligèrent au sujet de Benjamin, leur frère, et dirent: Aujourd'hui donc une Tribu a été retranchée d'Israël!
And the children of Israel repented for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.
7 Que ferons-nous pour eux, les survivants, à l'égard des femmes? Car nous avons juré par l'Éternel de ne point leur donner de nos filles en mariage.
How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters for wives?
8 Et ils dirent: Quels sont les seuls dans les Tribus d'Israël qui n'aient point paru devant l'Éternel à Mitspa? Et voici, de Jabès en Galaad personne ne s'était rendu à l'armée, à l'Assemblée.
And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabeshgilead to the assembly.
9 Et l'on fit passer le peuple à la revue, et voilà qu'il n'y avait aucun des habitants de Jabès en Galaad.
For the people were numbered, and, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead there.
10 Alors l'Assemblée y détacha douze mille hommes pris entre les braves, et on leur donna cet ordre: Allez et frappez les habitants de Jabès de Galaad avec le tranchant de l'épée, et les femmes et les enfants.
And the congregation sent there twelve thousand men of the most valiant, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.
11 Et voici comment vous les traiterez: vous dévouerez tous les mâles, et toute femme ayant connu la cohabitation d'un homme.
And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.
12 Et ils trouvèrent parmi les habitants de Jabès en Galaad quatre cents jeunes filles vierges n'ayant pas connu la cohabitation d'un homme, et ils les amenèrent dans le camp à Silo qui est dans le pays de Canaan.
And they found among the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them to the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
13 Alors toute l'Assemblée s'adressa par députés aux Benjaminites retirés au rocher de Rimmon, et leur annonça la paix.
And the whole congregation sent some to speak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably to them.
14 Et dans ce temps les Benjaminites revinrent, et on leur donna les femmes qui avaient survécu aux femmes de Jabès en Galaad, mais ce nombre ne fut pas suffisant.
And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Jabeshgilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.
15 Cependant le peuple s'affligeait au sujet de Benjamin, parce que l'Éternel avait fait une brèche dans les Tribus d'Israël.
And the people repented for Benjamin, because the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
16 Et les Anciens de l'Assemblée dirent: Que pourrions-nous faire pour les survivants quant aux femmes? Car les femmes ont été exterminées de Benjamin.
Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?
17 Et ils dirent: Que la propriété dévolue aux réchappés soit maintenue à Benjamin, afin qu'une Tribu ne soit pas rayée d'Israël.
And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that have escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.
18 Cependant nous ne pouvons leur donner de nos filles en mariage, puisque les enfants d'Israël ont fait ce serment: Maudit soit celui qui mariera une fille en Benjamin.
But we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.
19 Et ils dirent: Voici, toutes les années il y a une fête de l'Éternel à Silo qui est au nord de Béthel, à l'orient de la route qui monte de Béthel à Sichem et au midi de Lebona.
Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.
20 Et ils donnèrent cette instruction aux Benjaminites: Venez et vous mettez en embuscade dans les vignes,
Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;
21 et regardez! et voici, lorsque les filles de Silo sortiront pour danser en chœur, sortez aussi des vignes, et ravissez chacun pour vous une femme parmi les filles de Silo, puis rentrez sur le territoire de Benjamin.
And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
22 Et si leurs pères ou leurs frères viennent nous prendre à partie, nous leur dirons: Accordez-les, à nous, de bon gré (car ils n'ont pas reçu chacun sa femme dans la guerre), puisque ce n'est pas vous qui les leur avez données; dans ce dernier cas vous seriez en faute.
And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come to us to complain, that we will say to them, Be favourable to them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give to them at this time, that ye should be guilty.
23 Et ainsi firent les enfants de Benjamin, et ils enlevèrent un nombre de femmes égal au leur, parmi les danseuses dont ils furent les ravisseurs, puis ils partirent et regagnèrent leur domaine, et ils bâtirent les villes et s'y établirent.
And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned to their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them.
24 Et en ce temps les enfants d'Israël s'en allèrent de là chacun dans sa Tribu et dans sa famille, se rendant chacun dans sa propriété.
And the children of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went from there every man to his inheritance.
25 En ce temps-là il n'y avait pas de roi en Israël et chacun faisait ce qui lui semblait bon.
In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
