Juges 20
1 Et de Dan à Beerséba et au pays de Galaad tous les enfants d'Israël se mirent en mouvement comme un seul homme, et l'Assemblée se réunit devant l'Éternel à Mitspa.
And all the sons of Israel go out, and the company is assembled as one man, from Dan even unto Beer-Sheba, and the land of Gilead, unto Jehovah, at Mizpeh.
2 Et dans l'Assemblée du peuple de Dieu parurent les chefs de tout le peuple, toutes les Tribus d'Israël, quatre cent mille hommes de pied, tirant l'épée.
And the chiefs of all the people, of all the tribes of Israel, station themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen drawing sword.
3 Et les enfants de Benjamin apprirent que les enfants d'Israël étaient montés à Mitspa. Et les enfants d'Israël dirent: Exposez la manière en laquelle ce forfait a été commis.
And the sons of Benjamin hear that the sons of Israel have gone up to Mizpeh. And the sons of Israel say, 'Speak ye, how hath this evil been?'
4 Alors le Lévite, mari de la femme qu'on avait tuée, prit la parole et dit: J'entrai à Gibea en Benjamin, moi et ma concubine, pour y passer la nuit.
And the man, the Levite, husband of the woman who hath been murdered, answereth and saith, 'Into Gibeah (which [is] to Benjamin) I have come, I and my concubine, to lodge;
5 Et les citoyens de Gibea firent une émeute contre moi, et à cause de moi pendant la nuit ils cernèrent la maison. Ils pensaient à me tuer, et ils ont si indignement abusé de ma concubine qu'elle en est morte.
and rise against me do the masters of Gibeah — and they go round the house against me by night — me they thought to slay, and my concubine they have humbled, and she dieth;
6 Alors j'ai pris ma concubine et je l'ai coupée en pièces dont j'ai fait des envois dans toutes les terres de l'héritage d'Israël, parce qu'on a commis un forfait et une action infâme en Israël.
and I lay hold on my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and send her into all the country of the inheritance of Israel; for they have done wickedness and folly in Israel;
7 Voilà que vous êtes tous ici, enfants d'Israël; ici même délibérez et décidez.
lo, ye [are] all sons of Israel; give for you a word and counsel here.'
8 Alors tout le peuple se leva comme un seul homme et dit: Tous tant que nous sommes, nous ne voulons ni retourner à nos tentes ni rentrer dans nos maisons.
And all the people rise as one man, saying, 'None of us doth go to his tent, and none of us doth turn aside to his house;
9 Et maintenant voici comment nous traiterons Gibea: le sort désignera ceux de nous qui marcheront contre elle.
and now, this [is] the thing which we do to Gibeah — against it by lot!
10 Et nous lèverons dix hommes sur cent dans toutes les Tribus d'Israël et cent sur mille et mille sur dix mille, pour procurer des vivres à la troupe afin que s'étant mise en marche, elle traite Gibea de Benjamin en raison exacte de l'action infâme commise en Israël.
and we have taken ten men of a hundred, of all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred of a thousand, and a thousand of a myriad, to receive provision for the people, to do, at their coming to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly which it hath done in Israel.'
11 Tous les hommes d'Israël se rassemblèrent donc près de la ville unis comme un seul homme.
And every man of Israel is gathered unto the city, as one man — companions.
12 Et les Tribus d'Israël députèrent à toutes les familles de Benjamin, pour dire: Qu'est-ce que ce crime qui s'est commis chez vous?
And the tribes of Israel send men among all the tribes of Benjamin, saying, 'What [is] this evil which hath been among you?
13 Et maintenant livrez-nous les hommes dépravés de Gibea afin que nous les fassions mourir et que nous exterminions le crime du sein d'Israël. Mais les Benjaminites ne voulurent pas écouter la voix de leurs frères, les enfants d'Israël.
And now, give up the men — sons of worthlessness — which [are] in Gibeah, and we put them to death, and we put away evil from Israel.' And [the sons of] Benjamin have not been willing to hearken to the voice of their brethren, the sons of Israel;
14 Et les enfants de Benjamin vinrent de leurs villes se réunir à Gibea pour marcher au combat contre les enfants d'Israël.
and the sons of Benjamin are gathered out of the cities to Gibeah, to go out to battle with the sons of Israel.
15 Et l'on fit ce jour-là passer à la revue vingt-six mille Benjaminites tirant l'épée sortis des villes, non compris les habitants de Gibea qui passèrent à la revue au nombre de sept cents hommes d'élite.
And the sons of Benjamin number themselves on that day; out of the cities [are] twenty and six thousand men drawing sword, apart from the inhabitants of Gibeah, [who] numbered themselves, seven hundred chosen men;
16 Sur toute cette milice il y avait sept cents hommes d'élite inhabiles de la main droite; tous ils lançaient une pierre avec la fronde et ne manquaient pas le but d'un cheveu.
among all this people [are] seven hundred chosen men, bound of their right hand, each of these slinging with a stone at the hair, and he doth not err.
17 Et les Israélites qui passèrent à la revue, étaient, sans Benjamin, quatre cent mille hommes tirant l'épée, tous gens de guerre.
And the men of Israel numbered themselves, apart from Benjamin, four hundred thousand men, drawing sword, each of these a man of war.
18 Et s'étant mis en marche ils montèrent à Béthel et consultèrent Dieu. Et les enfants d'Israël demandèrent: Lequel de nous marchera le premier au combat contre les enfants de Benjamin? Et l'Éternel dit: Juda marchera le premier.
And they rise and go up to Beth-El, and ask of God, and the sons of Israel say, 'Who doth go up for us at the commencement to battle with the sons of Benjamin?' and Jehovah saith, 'Judah — at the commencement.'
19 Là-dessus les enfants d'Israël se mirent en campagne le matin, et ils vinrent camper devant Gibea.
And the sons of Israel rise in the morning, and encamp against Gibeah,
20 Et les hommes d'Israël sortirent pour livrer bataille aux Benjaminites, et ils se rangèrent en bataille contre eux devant Gibea.
and the men of Israel go out to battle with Benjamin, and the men of Israel set themselves in array with them, [for] battle against Gibeah,
21 Alors les Benjaminites firent une sortie de Gibea, et en ce jour tuèrent aux Israélites vingt-deux mille hommes qui jonchèrent le sol.
and the sons of Benjamin come out from Gibeah, and destroy in Israel on that day two and twenty thousand men — to the earth.
22 Mais l'armée, les hommes d'Israël, prirent courage et reformèrent leur ligne dans le lieu même où le premier jour ils l'avaient formée.
And the people, the men of Israel, strengthen themselves, and add to set the battle in array in the place where they arranged themselves on the first day.
23 Et les enfants d'Israël montèrent [à Béthel] et pleurèrent devant l'Éternel jusqu'au soir, et ils consultèrent l'Éternel en disant: Dois-je engager de nouveau le combat avec les enfants de Benjamin, mon frère? Et l'Éternel dit: Attaque-les!
And the sons of Israel go up and weep before Jehovah till the evening, and ask of Jehovah, saying, 'Do I add to draw nigh to battle with the sons of Benjamin, my brother?' And Jehovah saith, 'Go up against him.'
24 Les enfants d'Israël s'avancèrent donc contre les enfants de Benjamin, le deuxième jour.
And the sons of Israel draw near unto the sons of Benjamin on the second day,
25 Mais Benjamin sortit de Gibea à leur rencontre, le deuxième jour, et fit encore mordre la poussière à dix-huit mille hommes des enfants d'Israël, tous tirant l'épée.
and Benjamin cometh out to meet them from Gibeah on the second day, and destroy among the sons of Israel again eighteen thousand men — to the earth; all these are drawing sword.
26 Alors tous les enfants d'Israël et tout le peuple montèrent et vinrent à Béthel, et pleurant ils s'assirent là devant l'Éternel, et ils jeûnèrent ce jour-là jusqu'au soir et offrirent à l'Éternel des holocaustes et des sacrifices pacifiques.
And all the sons of Israel go up, even all the people, and come in to Beth-El, and weep, and sit there before Jehovah, and fast on that day till the evening, and cause to ascend burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before Jehovah.
27 Et les enfants d'Israël consultèrent l'Éternel (or à cette époque l'Arche de l'Alliance de Dieu était là;
And the sons of Israel ask of Jehovah, — and there [is] the ark of the covenant of God in those days,
28 et Phinées, fils d'Eléazar, fils d'Aaron, était en charge devant Lui à cette époque) en disant: Dois-je derechef marcher au combat contre les enfants de Benjamin, mon frère, ou bien me désisterai-je? Et l'Éternel dit: Marchez, car demain je les livrerai entre vos mains.
and Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, is standing before it in those days — saying, 'Do I add again to go out to battle with the sons of Benjamin, my brother, or do I cease?' And Jehovah saith, 'Go up, for to-morrow I give him into thy hand.'
29 Alors Israël dressa une embuscade contre Gibea de tous les côtés.
And Israel setteth liers in wait against Gibeah, round about,
30 Et les enfants d'Israël marchèrent contre ceux de Benjamin le troisième jour, et ils prirent position devant Gibea cette fois comme les autres fois.
and the sons of Israel go up against the sons of Benjamin, on the third day, and arrange themselves against Gibeah, as time by time.
31 Ensuite les enfants de Benjamin firent une sortie contre cette armée, et ils se laissèrent entraîner loin de la ville, et cette fois comme les autres fois ils se mirent à frapper et à tuer dans les rangs du peuple, sur les routes dont l'une mène à Béthel et l'autre à Gibea par la campagne, environ trente hommes d'Israël.
And the sons of Benjamin come out to meet the people; they have been drawn away out of the city, and begin to smite [some] of the people — wounded as time by time, in the highways (of which one is going up to Beth-El, and the other to Gibeah in the field), [are] about thirty men of Israel.
32 Et les enfants de Benjamin disaient: Ils sont battus par nous, comme au début. Mais les enfants d'Israël disaient: Fuyons, afin de les attirer loin de la ville sur ces routes.
And the sons of Benjamin say, 'They are smitten before us as at the beginning;' but the sons of Israel said, 'Let us flee, and draw them away out of the city, unto the highways.'
33 Et tous les hommes d'Israël quittant leur position formèrent leur ligne à Baal-Thamar, et les Israélites embusqués s'élancèrent hors de leur retraite, de la steppe de Gibea.
And all the men of Israel have risen from their place, and arrange themselves at Baal-Tamar, and the ambush of Israel is coming forth out of its place, out of the meadow of Gibeah.
34 Et de devant Gibea s'avancèrent dix mille hommes d'élite de tout Israël, et l'action devint sérieuse. Or [les Benjaminites] ne se doutaient pas du désastre qu'ils allaient essuyer.
And they come in over against Gibeah — ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel — and the battle [is] grievous, and they have not known that the evil is striking against them.
35 Et l'Éternel battit Benjamin devant Israël; et les enfants d'Israël, dans cette journée, tuèrent à Benjamin vingt-cinq mille et cent hommes tous tirant l'épée.
And Jehovah smiteth Benjamin before Israel, and the sons of Israel destroy in Benjamin, on that day, twenty and five thousand, and a hundred men; all these [are] drawing sword.
36 Les enfants de Benjamin voyaient déjà en déroute les enfants d'Israël qui cédaient le terrain aux Benjaminites, comptant sur l'embuscade qu'ils avaient dressée contre Gibea.
And the sons of Benjamin see that they have been smitten — and the men of Israel give place to Benjamin, for they have trusted unto the ambush which they had set against Gibeah,
37 Mais ces gens embusqués par un prompt mouvement assaillirent Gibea et l'occupèrent et frappèrent toute la ville avec le tranchant de l'épée.
and the ambush have hasted, and push against Gibeah, and the ambush draweth itself out, and smiteth the whole of the city by the mouth of the sword.
38 Or les hommes d'Israël étaient convenus avec les gens embusqués de ceci: « Faites en sorte qu'il s'élève de la ville un gros nuage de fumée. »
And there was the appointed sign to the men of Israel with the ambush — their causing to go up a great volume of smoke from the city.
39 C'est alors que dans la bataille les Israélites firent leur conversion, Benjamin commençant à tuer environ trente hommes à Israël et disant: Nul doute! ils sont battus par nous comme dans la première bataille.
And the men of Israel turn in battle, and Benjamin hath begun to smite the wounded among the men of Israel, about thirty men, for they said, 'Surely they are utterly smitten before us, as [at] the first battle;
40 Cependant de la ville commençait à s'élever le nuage, une colonne de fumée; et les Benjaminites regardèrent derrière eux, et voilà que toute la ville en feu s'élevait vers le ciel.
and the volume hath begun to go up from the city — a pillar of smoke — and Benjamin turneth behind, and lo, gone up hath the perfection of the city toward the heavens.
41 Et les Israélites ayant fait leur conversion, les hommes de Benjamin furent éperdus, car ils se voyaient sous le coup du désastre.
And the men of Israel have turned, and the men of Benjamin are troubled, for they have seen that the evil hath stricken against them —
42 Et tournant le dos aux Israélites ils prirent le chemin du désert; mais les combattants s'acharnèrent sur leurs traces, et massacrant ceux des villes dans les villes,
and they turn before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness, and the battle hath followed them; and those who [are] from the city are destroying them in their midst;
43 cernant et poursuivant Benjamin, l'écrasant quand il s'arrêtait, et cela jusque vis-à-vis de Gibea du côté du soleil levant.
they have compassed the Benjamites — they have pursued them — with ease they have trodden them down till over-against Gibeah, at the sun-rising.
44 Et ainsi périrent dix-huit mille hommes de Benjamin, tous braves guerriers.
And there fall of Benjamin eighteen thousand men — the whole of these [are] men of valour;
45 Et ayant tourné le dos, ils s'enfuirent dans le désert au rocher de Rimmon; mais les Israélites firent sur les routes une glanure de cinq mille hommes, et les poursuivirent jusqu'à Gédéon, et ils en tuèrent deux mille.
and they turn and flee toward the wilderness, unto the rock of Rimmon; and they glean of them in the highways five thousand men, and follow after them unto Gidom, and smite of them two thousand men.
46 Et la totalité des Benjaminites tués dans cette journée fut de vingt-cinq mille hommes tirant l'épée et tous braves guerriers.
And all those falling of Benjamin are twenty and five thousand men drawing sword, on that day — the whole of these [are] men of valour;
47 Et il y eut six cents hommes qui ayant tourné le dos s'enfuirent dans le désert au rocher de Rimmon et ils y demeurèrent quatre mois.
and there turn and flee into the wilderness, unto the rock of Rimmon six hundred men, and they dwell in the rock Rimmon four months.
48 Et les Israélites revinrent aux Benjaminites [restants], et ils les frappèrent avec le tranchant de l'épée depuis les hommes des villes jusqu'au bétail et à tout ce qui se trouva, ils incendièrent aussi toutes les villes qu'ils rencontrèrent.
And the men of Israel have turned back unto the sons of Benjamin, and smite them by the mouth of the sword out of the city, — men unto cattle, unto all that is found; also all the cities which are found they have sent into fire.
