Juges 19
1 Et à cette époque où il n'y avait pas de roi en Israël, il se trouva qu'un homme de Lévi séjournait au fond des monts d'Ephraïm; et il prit une femme, une concubine, de Bethléhem de Juda.
And it came to pass in those days, when [there was] no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem-judah.
2 Et elle lui fit infidélité et elle le quitta et regagna la maison de son père à Bethléhem de Juda, et elle y demeura un an quatre mois.
And his concubine played the whore against him, and went away from him unto her father’s house to Beth-lehem-judah, and was there four whole months.
3 Alors son mari se leva et il alla après elle pour parler à son cœur et la ramener; or il avait avec lui son valet et une couple d'ânes. Et elle l'introduisit dans la maison de son père, et l'ayant vu, le père de la jeune fille vint joyeux au-devant de lui.
And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, [and] to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father’s house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.
4 Et son beau-père, le père de la jeune fille, le retint à demeurer trois jours avec lui. Et ils mangèrent et burent et ils passèrent la nuit là.
And his father in law, the damsel’s father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.
5 Et le quatrième jour ils se levèrent le matin, et il se mettait en devoir de partir, lorsque le père de la jeune fille dit à son gendre: Prends pour soutenir ton cœur un peu de nourriture, et ensuite vous partirez.
And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.
6 Et ils s'assirent et mangèrent et burent les deux ensemble. Puis le père de la jeune fille dit à l'homme: Consens donc à passer la nuit ici et que ton cœur soit content.
And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel’s father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry.
7 Et comme il se disposait à partir, son beau-père le pressa tellement que derechef il resta pour la nuit.
And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again.
8 Et le cinquième jour dès le matin il se leva pour s'en aller. Alors le père de la jeune fille lui dit: Restaure-toi donc le cœur, et ils différèrent jusqu'au déclin du jour et ils mangèrent ensemble.
And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the damsel’s father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them.
9 Alors avec sa concubine et son valet l'homme s'apprêta à partir; et son beau-père, père de la jeune fille, lui dit: Vois donc! le jour baisse, le tard arrive! passez donc ici la nuit! Voici la chute du jour! passe ici la nuit et te réjouis le cœur, et demain dès le matin vous vous mettrez en route pour regagner ta tente.
And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel’s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.
10 Mais l'homme ne voulut pas rester encore une nuit; et s'étant levé il partit; et il arriva jusqu'en vue de Jébus, c'est-à-dire, Jérusalem; or il avait avec lui une couple d'ânes bâtés et sa concubine.
But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which [is] Jerusalem; and [there were] with him two asses saddled, his concubine also [was] with him.
11 Il étaient près de Jébus, et le jour avait beaucoup baissé. Et le valet dit à son maître: Viens, s'il te plaît, et entrons dans cette ville des Jébusites pour la nuit.
[And] when they [were] by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.
12 Mais son maître lui dit: Nous n'irons point loger dans une ville de l'étranger, où il n'y a point d'enfants d'Israël, mais nous gagnerons Gibea.
And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that [is] not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.
13 Et il dit à son valet: Viens et avançons vers un de ces lieux pour passer la nuit à Gibea ou à Rama.
And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah.
14 Et ils passèrent outre et cheminèrent, et le soleil se coucha pour eux près de Gibea, qui est à Benjamin.
And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them [when they were] by Gibeah, which [belongeth] to Benjamin.
15 Et ils tournèrent de ce côté pour venir passer la nuit à Gibea. Et y étant entré il s'arrêta dans la place de la ville, et il n'y eut personne qui leur offrît un asile dans sa maison pour la nuit.
And they turned aside thither, to go in [and] to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for [there was] no man that took them into his house to lodging.
16 Et voilà qu'un vieillard revenait des champs après son travail le soir; or cet homme était des monts d'Ephraïm, et il séjournait à Gibea; et les gens du lieu étaient Benjaminites;
And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which [was] also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place [were] Benjamites.
17 et ayant levé les yeux il aperçut le voyageur dans la place de la ville; et le vieillard dit: Où vas-tu et d'où viens-tu?
And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?
18 Et il lui répondit: De Bethléhem de Juda nous allons au fond de la montagne d'Ephraïm d'où je suis; et je suis allé à Bethléhem de Juda, et je me rends à la maison de l'Éternel, et personne ne m'offre un asile dans sa maison.
And he said unto him, We [are] passing from Beth-lehem-judah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence [am] I: and I went to Beth-lehem-judah, but I [am now] going to the house of the LORD; and there [is] no man that receiveth me to house.
19 Et nous avons et litière et fourrage pour nos ânes; et j'ai aussi du pain et du vin pour moi et pour ta servante et pour le valet qui accompagne tes serviteurs; nous n'avons faute de rien.
Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man [which is] with thy servants: [there is] no want of any thing.
20 Alors le vieillard dit: Rassure-toi! tout ce qui te manque sera à ma charge seulement; seulement tu ne passeras pas la nuit dans la rue.
And the old man said, Peace [be] with thee; howsoever [let] all thy wants [lie] upon me; only lodge not in the street.
21 Et il le mena dans sa maison, et garnit le râtelier pour les ânes; et ils baignèrent leurs pieds et ils mangèrent et burent.
So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.
22 Comme ils se récréaient le cœur, voilà que les hommes de la ville, gens dépravés, entourèrent la maison en se ruant contre la porte, et ils dirent au vieillard, maître de la maison: Livre-nous l'homme arrivé chez toi, pour que nous le connaissions!
[Now] as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, [and] beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.
23 Alors le maître de la maison se présenta à eux et leur dit: Non! mes frères, oh! non, ne faites pas le mal! Dès que cet homme est entré dans ma maison, ne commettez pas cette action infâme.
And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, [nay], I pray you, do not [so] wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.
24 Voici, ma fille qui est vierge, et sa concubine, je vous les livrerai; abusez d'elles, et les traitez à votre gré; mais sur cet homme ne commettez pas cette action infâme.
Behold, [here is] my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.
25 Mais ces gens ne voulurent pas l'écouter. Alors l'homme prit sa concubine et la leur amena dans la rue; et ils la connurent, et assouvirent sur elle leur lubricité toute la nuit jusqu'au matin, et ils la relâchèrent au lever de l'aurore.
But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
26 Et à l'aube du matin cette femme vint tomber à la porte de la maison de l'homme chez qui était son maître et elle fut là jusqu'au jour.
Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord [was], till it was light.
27 Et le matin comme son maître s'étant levé ouvrait les portes de la maison et sortait pour suivre sa route, voilà que sa concubine était étendue à la porte de la maison, les mains posées sur le seuil.
And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down [at] the door of the house, and her hands [were] upon the threshold.
28 Et il lui dit: Lève-toi et partons! Mais personne ne répondit: Alors le mari la chargea sur son âne, et se mit en marche et gagna sa demeure.
And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her [up] upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.
29 Et arrivé dans sa maison il prend le couteau, et saisit sa concubine, et la coupe en douze pièces et la démembre, et en fait des envois dans tout le territoire d'Israël.
And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, [together] with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.
30 A ce spectacle tout le monde dit: Jamais fait pareil ne s'est passé ni vu depuis le jour où les enfants d'Israël sortirent du pays d'Egypte jusqu'aujourd'hui! Ayez-le sur le cœur, consultez-vous et parlez.
And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak [your minds].
