Jérémie 44

1 La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie pour tous les Juifs établis au pays d'Egypte, habitant à Migdol, et à Tachphanès, et à Noph, et au pays de Pathros, en ces termes:

[This is] the message that Yahweh gave me concerning the Jews who were living in [northern] Egypt—in Migdol, Tahpenes, and Memphis [cities], and in the Pathros [region in southern Egypt]:

2 Ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées, Dieu d'Israël: Vous avez vu tous les maux que j'ai fait venir sur Jérusalem et sur toutes les villes de Juda, et les voilà en ruine aujourd'hui, et dépeuplées,

“This is what [I], the Commander of the armies of angels, the God whom [you] Israelis [say you belong to], say: ‘You saw the disaster that I caused [the people in] Jerusalem and the other towns in Judah to experience. Those towns are now ruined and deserted.

3 à cause du mal qu'ils ont commis, afin de m'irriter, en allant encenser et servir d'autres dieux inconnus à eux, à vous et à vos pères.

[That happened] because I was extremely angry with them on account of their being very wicked. They burned incense to other gods and worshiped them. They were gods that you [previously] did not know about, and your ancestors also [did not know about them].

4 Et je vous envoyai tous mes serviteurs, les prophètes, dès le matin, pour vous dire: « Ne faites donc pas ces choses abominables que je hais! »

Many times I sent my prophets who served me, to say to them, “Do not do those abominable things that I hate!”

5 mais ils n'écoutèrent point et ne prêtèrent point l'oreille pour renoncer à leur méchanceté, en n'encensant plus d'autres dieux.

But my people would not pay any attention [DOU] [to what I said to them]. They would not turn away from their wicked behavior, or stop burning incense to [worship/honor] other gods.

6 Alors ma fureur et ma colère s'épancha, et consuma les villes de Juda et les rues de Jérusalem, qui devinrent des ruines et un désert, comme elles le sont aujourd'hui.

So I poured out my anger [MTY] on them. I punished people on the streets of Jerusalem and on the [other] towns in Judah. It caused those towns to be ruined and deserted, and they are still like that.’

7 Et maintenant, ainsi parle l'Éternel, Dieu des armées, Dieu d'Israël: Pourquoi faites-vous un si grand mal pour vous perdre, que d'être cause du retranchement de vos hommes et de vos femmes, de vos enfants et de vos nourrissons, du milieu de Juda, de sorte qu'il ne survive aucun d'entre vous?

So now [I], the Commander of the armies of angels, the God whom [you] Israelis [say you belong to], ask you: ‘Why are you causing yourselves to experience these disasters? [Do you not realize that because of what you are doing], soon there will be no more men or women or children or infants left among you [who have come here to Egypt] from Judah?

8 que de m'irriter par l'œuvre de vos mains, en encensant d'autres dieux au pays d'Egypte, où vous êtes allés demeurer, pour être exterminés, et pour devenir une malédiction et un opprobre parmi tous les peuples de la terre?

Why are you [RHQ] provoking me and causing me to be very angry by burning incense to the idols that you have made here in Egypt? [If you continue doing this, ] you will destroy yourselves, and you will cause yourselves to be people whom all the nations on the earth will curse and despise.

9 Avez-vous oublié les crimes de vos pères, et les crimes des rois de Juda, et les crimes de leurs femmes, et vos crimes, et les crimes de vos femmes, commis dans le pays de Juda et dans les rues de Jérusalem?

Have you forgotten [how I punished] your ancestors for the wicked things that they did, and [how I punished] the kings and queens of Judah for what they did, and you and your wives for the sins that you committed in the streets of Jerusalem and [the other towns] in Judah?

10 Ils ne se sont point humiliés jusques aujourd'hui; ils n'ont eu aucune crainte, et n'ont point suivi ma loi, ni mes commandements que j'avais mis sous vos yeux et sous les yeux de vos pères.

Up until this day you have not humbled yourselves or revered me. You have not obeyed the laws and decrees [DOU] that I gave to you and your ancestors.’

11 C'est pourquoi ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées, Dieu d'Israël: Voici, je tourne les yeux contre vous, pour maltraiter et pour exterminer tout Juda.

Therefore, this is what [I], the Commander of the armies of angels, the God whom [you] Israelis [say you belong to], say: ‘I am determined to cause all of you to experience disasters and to get rid of every one of you.

12 Et je veux enlever les survivants de Juda qui ont pris le parti d'aller au pays d'Egypte pour s'y fixer, et ils seront tous consumés; ils tomberont dans le pays d'Egypte; l'épée et la famine les dévoreront du petit au grand; ils périront par l'épée et la famine, et ils seront en exécration, et en horreur, et en malédiction et en opprobre.

[You] people from Judah who have survived were determined to come and live here in Egypt. So I will get rid of all of you here in Egypt. Every one of you will die, including those who are important and those who are not important. [Some of] you will be killed by [your enemies’] swords, [some will die] from famines. You will become [people whom others] curse, be horrified about, and make fun of.

13 Et je châtierai ceux qui habitent au pays d'Egypte, comme j'ai châtié Jérusalem, par l'épée, la famine et la peste,

I will punish you here in Egypt like I punished [others in] Jerusalem, [some of whom were killed] by [their enemies’] swords and [some of whom] died from famines or diseases.

14 et nul ne se sauvera, ni n'échappera parmi les survivants de Juda venus pour s'y fixer, dans le pays d'Egypte, et pour retourner au pays de Juda où leur âme languit de revenir habiter, car ils n'y reviendront pas, sinon des réchappés.

You people who did not die in Judah fled here to Egypt, hoping that [some day] you would return to Judah. But very few [HYP] of you will survive and escape. You are longing/wanting to remain alive and return to Judah, but only a very few of you will escape and be able to do that.’”

15 Et tous les hommes, qui savaient que leurs femmes avaient encensé d'autres dieux, et toutes les femmes qui se trouvaient là en grand nombre, et tout le peuple qui habitait au pays d'Egypte et à Pathros, répondirent à Jérémie, et dirent:

Then a large group of the people who had started to live in northern Egypt and southern Egypt, including all the men who knew that their wives had been burning incense to other gods, and all the women who were standing there, said this to me:

16 Nous n'obéirons à rien de ce que tu nous as dit au nom de l'Éternel;

“You are saying that [MTY] Yahweh gave messages to you, but we will not pay any attention to your messages!

17 mais nous voulons faire tout ce que notre bouche a exprimé, encenser la reine des Cieux, et lui offrir des libations, comme nous l'avons fait, nous et nos pères, nos rois et nos princes, dans les villes de Juda, et dans les rues de Jérusalem, pour que nous ayons du pain en abondance, et que nous soyons heureux et que nous ne voyions pas la calamité.

We will certainly do everything that we said that we would do. We will burn incense to [worship our goddess Astarte, ] the Queen of Heaven, and we will pour out offerings [of wine] to her, just like we and our ancestors and our kings and [their] officials have [always] done in the streets of Jerusalem and in the [other] towns in Judah. At that time, we had plenty of food, and we were prosperous and we did not have any troubles.

18 Car, depuis que nous avons cessé d'encenser la reine des Cieux et de lui offrir des libations, nous manquons de tout, et nous sommes détruits par l'épée et la famine.

But ever since we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven and giving her offerings [of wine], we have had many troubles, and [some of our people] have been killed by [our enemies’] swords and [some have died] from hunger.”

19 Et, [dirent les femmes], si nous encensons la reine des Cieux, et lui offrons des libations, est-ce à l'insu de nos maris que nous faisons pour elle des gâteaux portant son effigie, et que nous lui offrons des libations?

And [the women said], “[Furthermore], we burned incense and poured out [wine] offerings to the Queen of Heaven, and we also made small cakes that resembled her idol, to offer to her. But our husbands certainly knew about [and approved of] [RHQ] what we were doing!”

20 Alors Jérémie s'adressa à tout le peuple, aux hommes et aux femmes, et à tout le peuple qui lui avait répliqué, et dit:

Then I said to all the men and women who had answered me,

21 L'encens que vous avez brûlé dans les villes de Juda et les rues de Jérusalem, vous et vos pères, vos rois et vos princes, et le peuple du pays, l'Éternel ne se le rappelle-t-Il pas, ne lui revient-il pas dans la pensée?

“Do not think [RHQ] that Yahweh did not know that you and your ancestors and your kings and their officials and all the other people in Judah were burning incense to [worship/honor] idols in the streets of Jerusalem and in the [other] towns in Judah!

22 Et l'Éternel n'a pu le supporter davantage, à cause de la malice de vos actions, à cause des abominations que vous avez faites, et votre pays est devenu un désert, et une désolation, et une malédiction, il a été dépeuplé, comme il l'est aujourd'hui.

It was because Yahweh could no longer endure/tolerate your wicked actions and the detestable things that you were doing that he caused your land to be [a place whose name people say when they] curse someone, a land that is ruined and which has no one living in it. And your land is still like that.

23 Parce que vous avez brûlé de l'encens, et que vous avez péché contre l'Éternel, et que vous n'avez point obéi à la voix de l'Éternel, ni suivi sa loi, et ses ordonnances et ses commandements, c'est pour cela que vous sont survenus ces maux, tels qu'ils sont aujourd'hui.

It is because you burned incense to [worship/honor] idols and committed [other] sins against Yahweh that you experienced [all] those disasters. It is because you have not obeyed him or his laws and decrees and commandments.”

24 Et Jérémie dit à tout le peuple et à toutes les femmes: Écoutez la parole de l'Éternel, vous tous les hommes de Juda, qui êtes au pays d'Egypte.

[Then] I said to all of them, including the women, “All you [people of] Judah who are [here] in Egypt, listen to this message from Yahweh.

25 Ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées, Dieu d'Israël: Vous et vos femmes, vous parlez de vos bouches, et de vos mains vous accomplissez vos paroles; vous dites: Nous accomplirons les vœux que nous avons faits, d'encenser la reine des Cieux, et de lui offrir des libations; oui, tenez, tenez vos vœux! accomplissez, accomplissez vos vœux!

This is what the Commander of the armies of angels, the God whom [we] Israelis [worship], says [to you Israeli men]: ‘You and your wives have said that you would continue to do what you promised, to burn incense and pour out wine to the [goddess whom you call] the Queen of Heaven. [And you have proved by your actions that you intend to continue to do that]. So go ahead and continue doing what you have promised to do [for her].’

26 Aussi, écoutez la parole de l'Éternel, vous tous les Juifs qui habitez au pays d'Egypte: Voici, je le jure par mon grand nom, dit l'Éternel, mon nom ne sera plus nommé par la bouche d'aucun des Juifs qui disent: « Vive notre Seigneur, l'Éternel! » dans tout le pays d'Egypte.

But now, all you people from Judah who are [now] living [here] in Egypt, listen to this message from Yahweh. He says, ‘I have solemnly declared, using my great name, that [soon] none of [you] people from Judah who are here in Egypt will ever again use my name. [There will be none of you who, when you solemnly promise to do something, ] will ever again say, “[I will do it as surely] as Yahweh lives.”

27 Voici, je veille sur eux pour leur faire du mal et non pas du bien; et tous les hommes de Juda qui sont au pays d'Egypte, périront par l'épée et par la famine, jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient anéantis.

Because I will be watching over you, not to cause good things to happen to you but to cause things to happen that will harm you. [Almost] everyone [HYP] from Judah who is [now here] in Egypt will experience being [killed by their enemies’] swords, or dying from famine.

28 Et ceux qui échapperont à l'épée reviendront du pays d'Egypte au pays de Juda, en petit nombre, et tous les survivants de Juda venus au pays d'Egypte pour s'y fixer, sauront quelle parole aura son effet, la mienne ou la leur.

[Only a very] few [of you] will not die, and will return to Judah. [When that happens], all those who came to Egypt will find out whose words (were true/were fulfilled), theirs or mine.’

29 Et que ce soit ici, dit l'Éternel, le signe que je vous châtierai en ce lieu, afin que vous sachiez qu'elles auront leur effet, les menaces que je prononce contre vous;

And Yahweh [also] says, ‘I will do something that will prove to you that everything that I have said will happen, and that I will punish you [here] in this place.

30 ainsi parle l'Éternel: Voici, je livre Pharaon Hophra, roi d'Egypte, aux mains de ses ennemis, et aux mains de ceux qui en veulent à sa vie, comme j'ai livré Sédécias, roi de Juda, aux mains de Nébucadnézar, roi de Babel, son ennemi, qui en voulait à sa vie.

I will cause Hophra, the king of Egypt, to be captured by his enemies who want to kill him, just like I caused King Zedekiah of Judah to be captured by [the soldiers of] King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.’” [And that is what happened several years later].
