Hébreux 11
1 Or, la foi est une persuasion de ce qu'on espère, une conviction de choses qu'on ne voit point.
Fayth is a sure confidence of thynges which are hoped for and a certayntie of thynges which are not sene.
2 C'est parce qu'ils possédaient une telle foi que les anciens ont reçu un bon témoignage.
By it ye elders were well reported of.
3 C'est par la foi que nous reconnaissons que l'univers a été formé par la parole de Dieu, en sorte que ce n'est pas de choses visibles que ce qu'on voit a été fait. (aiōn g165)
Thorow fayth we vnderstonde that the worlde was ordeyned by the worde of god: and that thynges which are sene were made of thynges which are not sene. (aiōn g165)
4 C'est par la foi qu'Abel offrit à Dieu un sacrifice préférable à celui de Caïn; c'est par elle qu'il reçut le témoignage d'être juste, lui-même rendant témoignage à Dieu par ses offrandes; c'est par elle que, quoique trépassé, il parle encore.
By fayth Abell offered vnto god a more plenteous sacrifice then Cayn: by which he obteyned witnes that he was righteous god testifyinge of his gyftes: by which also he beynge deed yet speaketh.
5 C'est par la foi qu'Enoch fut enlevé afin qu'il ne vît pas la mort, et on ne le trouva plus parce que Dieu l'avait enlevé; en effet, avant cet enlèvement, il lui est rendu le témoignage d'avoir plu à Dieu;
By fayth was Enoch traslated yt he shuld not se deeth: nether was he founde: for God had taken him awaye. Before he was taken awaye he was reported of that he had pleased God:
6 or, sans la foi, il est impossible de Lui plaire, car il faut que celui qui s'approche de Dieu croie qu'il existe, et qu'il devient le rémunérateur de ceux qui Le cherchent.
but with out fayth it is vnpossible to please him. For he that commeth to God must beleve that God is and that he is a rewarder of them that seke him.
7 C'est par la foi que Noé, instruit par un oracle des choses qu'on ne voyait point encore, construisit avec une pieuse prévoyance une arche pour sauver sa famille; c'est par elle qu'il condamna le monde, et qu'il devint héritier de la justice que procure la foi.
By fayth Noe honored God after that he was warned of thinges which were not sene and prepared the arcke to the savinge of his houssholde thorowe the which arcke he condempned the worlde and became heyre of the rightewesnes which commeth by fayth.
8 C'est par la foi que celui qui est appelé Abraham se soumit à émigrer dans le pays qu'il devait recevoir en héritage, et il émigra sans savoir où il allait;
By fayth Abraha whe he was called obeyed to goo out into a place which he shuld afterwarde receave to inheritaunce and he wet out not knowynge whether he shuld goo.
9 c'est par la foi qu'il s'établit dans la terre qui lui était promise comme dans une terre étrangère, habitant sous des tentes, ainsi qu'Isaac et Jacob, les cohéritiers de la même promesse;
By fayth he removed into the londe yt was promysed him as into a straunge countre and dwelt in tabernacles: and so dyd Isaac and Iacob heyres with him of the same promes.
10 car il attendait avec impatience la ville qui a les fondements, celle dont Dieu est l'architecte et le fabricateur.
For he loked for a citie havinge a foundacio whose bylder and maker is God.
11 C'est par la foi que Sara elle-même reçut, même au delà de l'âge ordinaire, la capacité de créer une postérité, parce qu'elle avait cru à la fidélité de Celui qui avait fait la promesse.
Thorow fayth Sara also receaved stregth to be with chylde and was delivered of a chylde when she was past age because she iudged him faythfull which had promysed.
12 De là vient encore que c'est d'un seul homme, et même d'un homme décrépit, qu'ils sont nés aussi nombreux que les étoiles du ciel et que le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer, lequel est innombrable.
And therfore spronge therof one (and of one which was as good as deed) so many in multitude as the starres of ye skye and as the sond of the see shore which is innumerable.
13 C'est dans la foi qu'ils sont tous morts, sans avoir vu se réaliser pour eux les promesses, mais après en avoir de loin aperçu et salué la réalisation, et avoir confessé qu'ils étaient étrangers et voyageurs sur la terre. »
And they all dyed in fayth and receaved not the promyses: but sawe them a farre of and beleved them and saluted them: and confessed that they were straungers and pilgrems on the erthe.
14 Car ceux qui parlent ainsi montrent clairement qu'ils soupirent après leur patrie.
They that saye soche thinges declare that they seke a coutre.
15 Et, si c'eût été de celle qu'ils avaient quittée qu'ils faisaient mention, ils auraient eu le temps d'y retourner;
Also yf they had bene myndfull of that countre from whence they came oute they had leasure to have returned agayne.
16 mais on voit bien que c'en est une meilleure qu'ils désirent, je veux dire la patrie céleste; c'est pourquoi Dieu n'a point honte, en ce qui les concerne, d'être appelé « leur Dieu », car Il leur a préparé une ville.
But now they desyre a better that is to saye a hevenlye. Wherfore God is not ashamed of them even to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a citie.
17 C'est par la foi qu'Abraham, mis à l'épreuve, a offert Isaac en sacrifice, et qu'il offrit son fils unique;
In fayth Abraham offered vp Isaac whe he was tempted and he offered him beinge his only begotten sonne which had receaved the promyses
18 lui, qui avait accepté les promesses, et auquel il avait été dit: « C'est en Isaac que se réalisera pour toi le nom de postérité; »
of who it was sayde in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
19 mais il pensa que Dieu peut relever, même d'entre les morts; d'entre lesquels (figurément, il est vrai, ) il recouvra son fils.
for he cosidered that God was able to rayse vp agayne fro deeth. Wherfore receaved he him for an ensample.
20 C'est par la foi, et en vue de l'avenir, qu'Isaac bénit Jacob et Ésaü.
In fayth Isaac blessed Iacob and Esau concerninge thinges to come.
21 C'est par la foi que Jacob, en mourant, bénit chacun des fils de Joseph, et qu'il adora, en s'appuyant sur l'extrémité de son bâton. —
By fayth Iacob when he was a dyinge blessed both the sonnes of Ioseph and bowed him selfe towarde the toppe of his cepter.
22 C'est par la foi que Joseph, en mourant, fit mention de la sortie des fils d'Israël, et donna des ordres relatifs à ses propres ossements.
By fayth Ioseph when he dyed remebred the departinge of the chyldren of Israel and gave commaundement of his bones.
23 C'est par la foi que Moïse, après sa naissance, fut, pendant trois mois, tenu caché par ses parents (car ils voyaient la beauté de l'enfant), et qu'ils ne craignirent point le décret du roi.
By fayth Moses when he was borne was hid thre monethes of his father and mother be cause they sawe he was a proper chylde: nether feared they the kynges commaundemet.
24 C'est par la foi que Moïse, étant devenu grand, se refusa à être appelé le fils d'une fille de Pharaon,
By fayth Moses when he was great refused to be called ye sonne of Pharaos doughter
25 aimant mieux être maltraité avec le peuple de Dieu, que de goûter momentanément une jouissance coupable,
and chose rather to suffre adversitie wt the people of God then to enioye the pleasurs of synne for a ceason
26 et regardant comme une richesse plus grande que les trésors de l'Egypte l'opprobre de Christ, car il avait les yeux fixés sur la rémunération.
and estemed the rebuke of Christ greater ryches then the treasure of Egypt. For he had a respect vnto ye rewarde.
27 C'est par la foi qu'il quitta l'Egypte, sans redouter le courroux du roi, car il tint ferme comme s'il voyait l'Invisible.
By fayth he forsoke Egypt and feared not the fearcenes of the kynge. For he endured even as he had sene him which is invisible.
28 C'est par la foi qu'il institua la pâque et l'aspersion du sang, afin que l'exterminateur ne touchât pas leurs premiers-nés.
Thorow fayth he ordeyned the ester lambe and the effusion of bloud lest he that destroyed the fyrst borne shuld touche them.
29 C'est par la foi qu'ils traversèrent la mer Rouge comme une terre sèche, tandis que les Égyptiens qui s'y risquèrent furent engloutis.
By fayth they passed thorow the reed see as by drye londe which when the Egypcians had assayed to do they were drouned.
30 C'est par la foi que les murs de Jéricho tombèrent, après avoir été investis pendant sept jours.
By fayth the walles of Ierico fell doune after they were copased about seven dayes.
31 C'est par la foi que Rahab l'impudique ne périt pas avec les rebelles, parce qu'elle avait pacifiquement reçu les espions.
By fayth ye harlot Raab perisshed not with the vnbelevers whe she had receaved the spyes to lodgynge peaseably.
32 Et que dire encore? Car le temps me manquera si je parle de Gédéon, de Barac, de Samson, de Jephté, de David, et de Samuel, et des prophètes,
And what shall I more saye ye tyme wold be to short for me to tell of Gedeo of Barach and of Samson and of Iephthae: also of David and Samuel and of the Prophetes:
33 qui, par la foi, ont conquis des royaumes, exercé la justice, obtenu des promesses, fermé la gueule des lions,
which thorowe fayth subdued kyngdomes wrought righteousnes obteyned the promyses stopped the mouthes of lyons
34 éteint la puissance du feu, échappé au fil de l'épée, recouvré les forces perdues, montré leur vaillance dans la guerre et fait décamper l'ennemi.
queched the violence of fyre escaped the edge of the swearde of weake were made stroge waxed valient in fight turned to flyght the armyes of the alientes.
35 Des femmes entrepris, par une résurrection, possession de leurs morts; d'autres ont été torturés, après s'être refusés au rachat, afin d'obtenir une meilleure résurrection;
And the wemen receaved their deed raysed to lyfe agayne. Other were racked and wolde not be delyvered that they myght receave a better resurreccion.
36 d'autres ont eu à subir des outrages et des coups, et même des chaînes et la prison;
Other tasted of mockynges and scourginginges morover of bondes and presonmet:
37 ils ont été lapidés, sciés, tentés; ils sont morts par l'épée; ils ont erré, vêtus de peaux de mouton, de peaux de chèvre, dénués de tout, persécutés, maltraités;
were stoned were hewen a sunder were tepted were slayne with sweardes walked vppe and doune in shepes skynnes in gotes skynnes in nede tribulacio and vexacio
38 ils ont été, eux dont le monde n'était pas digne, errants dans les déserts, les montagnes, les cavernes, et les crevasses de la terre.
which ye worlde was not worthy of: they wadred in wildernes in moutaynes in dennes and caves of the erth.
39 Et tous ceux-là, quoiqu'ils eussent reçu, à cause de leur foi, un bon témoignage, n'ont point vu se réaliser pour eux les promesses,
And these all thorow fayth obtayned good reporte and receaved not the promes
40 car Dieu avait d'avance arrêté pour nous quelque chose de meilleur, afin qu'ils ne fussent pas amenés à la perfection sans nous.
God provydinge a better thinge for vs that they with out vs shuld not be made parfecte.
