Genèse 48

1 Et après ces choses il arriva que l'on dit à Joseph: Voilà ton père malade. Et il prit avec lui ses deux fils, Manassé et Ephraïm.

And it came to pass after these things, that [one] told Joseph, Behold, thy father [is] sick: and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.

2 Et on l'annonça à Jacob en ces termes: Voici que ton fils Joseph arrive chez toi. Et Jacob recueillit ses forces et s'assit au lit.

And [one] told Jacob, and said, Behold, thy son Joseph cometh unto thee: and Israel strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed.

3 Et Jacob dit à Joseph: Dieu, le Tout-Puissant, m'est apparu à Luz au pays de Canaan, et m'a béni

And Jacob said unto Joseph, God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me,

4 et m'a dit: Voici, je veux te rendre fécond et te multiplier et te faire devenir une masse de peuples, et je donnerai ce pays-ci à ta postérité après toi en propriété éternelle.

And said unto me, Behold, I will make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, and I will make of thee a multitude of people; and will give this land to thy seed after thee [for] an everlasting possession.

5 Et maintenant tes deux fils qui te sont nés au pays d'Égypte avant mon arrivée chez toi au pays d'Égypte, seront miens; Ephraïm et Manassé seront miens à l'égal de Ruben et Siméon.

And now thy two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt before I came unto thee into Egypt, [are] mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine.

6 Mais tes enfants que tu engendreras après eux, seront tiens; ils seront compris sous le nom de leurs frères dans le lot de ceux-ci.

And thy issue, which thou begettest after them, shall be thine, [and] shall be called after the name of their brethren in their inheritance.

7 Et quand je revenais de Mésopotamie, à mes côtés mourut Rachel dans le pays de Canaan, en route, à quelque distance d'Ephrata; et c'est là que je lui donnai la sépulture sur le chemin d'Ephrata, c'est-à-dire Bethléhem.

And as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan in the way, when yet [there was] but a little way to come unto Ephrath: and I buried her there in the way of Ephrath; the same [is] Beth-lehem.

8 Alors Israël vit les deux fils de Joseph et dit: Qui sont-ils?

And Israel beheld Joseph’s sons, and said, Who [are] these?

9 Et Joseph dit à son père: Ce sont mes fils que Dieu m'a donnés ici. Et il dit: Eh bien! amène-les-moi afin que je les bénisse.

And Joseph said unto his father, They [are] my sons, whom God hath given me in this [place]. And he said, Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will bless them.

10 Or les yeux d'Israël étaient accablés par l'âge et il ne pouvait plus voir. Et il les fit approcher de lui, et il les embrassa et les étreignit.

Now the eyes of Israel were dim for age, [so that] he could not see. And he brought them near unto him; and he kissed them, and embraced them.

11 Et Israël dit à Joseph: Je ne pensais pas revoir ton visage et voilà que Dieu m'a accordé de voir aussi ta postérité!

And Israel said unto Joseph, I had not thought to see thy face: and, lo, God hath shewed me also thy seed.

12 Et Joseph les éloigna de ses genoux et se prosterna la face contre terre.

And Joseph brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth.

13 Puis Joseph les prit les deux, Ephraïm à sa droite, à la gauche d'Israël, et Manassé à sa gauche, à la droite d'Israël, et il les fit approcher de lui.

And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought [them] near unto him.

14 Mais Israël étendit sa main droite et la posa sur la tête d'Ephraïm qui était pourtant le cadet, et il posa sa main gauche sur la tête de Manassé; ce fut sciemment qu'il posa ainsi sa main, car Manassé était le premier-né.

And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid [it] upon Ephraim’s head, who [was] the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh [was] the firstborn.

15 Et il bénit Joseph et dit: Dieu en la présence duquel ont marché mes pères, Abraham et Isaac, le Dieu qui a été mon berger depuis que j'existe jusqu'à ce jour,

And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day,

16 l'Ange qui m'a délivré de tous les maux, bénisse ces enfants; que mon nom et le nom de mes pères, Abraham et Isaac, soient portés par eux, et qu'ils multiplient abondamment dans le pays.

The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

17 Mais Joseph ayant vu que son père posait sa main droite sur la tête d'Ephraïm en eut du déplaisir, et il prit la main de son père pour la transférer de la tête d'Ephraïm sur la tête de Manassé.

And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head unto Manasseh’s head.

18 Et Joseph dit à son père: Non pas ainsi, mon père, car celui-ci est le premier-né, pose ta main droite sur sa tête.

And Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father: for this [is] the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head.

19 Mais son père refusa et dit: Je le sais, mon fils, je le sais! lui aussi il deviendra un peuple, lui aussi il grandira; mais son frère cadet sera plus grand que lui, et sa postérité sera une multitude de peuples.

And his father refused, and said, I know [it], my son, I know [it: ] he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.

20 Il les bénit donc ainsi ce jour-là et il dit: Israël bénira par toi et dira: Que Dieu te traite comme Ephraïm et comme Manassé! et il mit ainsi Ephraïm avant Manassé.

And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.

21 Et Israël dit à Joseph: Voici, je meurs, et Dieu sera avec vous et vous ramènera au pays de vos pères,

And Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die: but God shall be with you, and bring you again unto the land of your fathers.

22 je te donne de plus qu'à tes frères une portion que j'ai conquise sur les Amoréens avec mon épée et mon arc.

Moreover I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.
