Genèse 23
1 Et la vie de Sarah fut de cent vingt-sept ans, années de vie de Sarah.
And Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old: [these were] the years of the life of Sarah.
2 Et Sarah mourut à Kiriafh-Arba (qui est Hébron)au pays de Canaan, et Abraham vint pour le deuil de Sarah et pour la pleurer.
And Sarah died in Kirjath-arba; the same [is] Hebron in the land of Canaan: and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.
3 Et Abraham se leva de devant son cadavre, et il s'adressa aux fils de Heth en ces termes:
And Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spake unto the sons of Heth, saying,
4 Je suis un hôte et un étranger chez vous: accordez-moi une propriété sépulcrale chez vous, afin que je puisse donner la sépulture à mon cadavre et l'éloigner de moi.
I [am] a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.
5 Sur quoi les fils de Heth répondirent à Abraham en lui disant:
And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying unto him,
6 Oh, écoute-nous, mon seigneur: Tu es un prince de Dieu au milieu de nous, donne la sépulture à ton cadavre dans le meilleur de nos tombeaux; aucun de nous ne te refusera son tombeau pour y donner la sépulture à ton cadavre.
Hear us, my lord: thou [art] a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead.
7 Alors Abraham se leva et s'inclina devant le peuple du pays, devant les fils de Heth, et leur parla en ces termes:
And Abraham stood up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, [even] to the children of Heth.
8 Si c'est votre sentiment que je donne la sépulture à mon cadavre et que je l'éloigne de moi, écoutez-moi et intercédez pour moi auprès de Ephron, fils de Tsohar,
And he communed with them, saying, If it be your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight; hear me, and intreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar,
9 pour qu'il me cède la grotte de Macpéla qui lui appartient et qui est à l'extrémité de son champ; qu'il me la cède contre paiement en plein au milieu de vous comme propriété sépulcrale.
That he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which [is] in the end of his field; for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me for a possession of a buryingplace amongst you.
10 Or Ephron demeurait parmi les fils de Heth. Alors Ephron, le Héthien, répondit à Abraham aux oreilles des fils de Heth, de tous ceux qui passaient par la porte de sa ville, et il dit:
And Ephron dwelt among the children of Heth: and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience of the children of Heth, [even] of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying,
11 Non pas! mon seigneur, écoule-moi! Je te fais don du champ et de la grotte qui y est; je t'en fais don; c'est aux yeux des fils de Heth que j'en fais don à toi: donne la sépulture à ton cadavre.
Nay, my lord, hear me: the field give I thee, and the cave that [is] therein, I give it thee; in the presence of the sons of my people give I it thee: bury thy dead.
12 Alors Abraham s'inclina devant le peuple du pays;
And Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land.
13 et s'adressant à Ephron aux oreilles du peuple du pays il dit: Si seulement tu voulais m'écouter! Je paierai le prix du champ et j'y donnerai la sépulture à mon cadavre.
And he spake unto Ephron in the audience of the people of the land, saying, But if thou [wilt give it], I pray thee, hear me: I will give thee money for the field; take [it] of me, and I will bury my dead there.
14 Sur cela Ephron répondit à Abraham en ces termes:
And Ephron answered Abraham, saying unto him,
15 Mon seigneur, écoute-moi! un terrain de quatre cents sicles d'argent, qu'est-ce que cela entre moi et toi? Donne donc la sépulture à ton cadavre.
My lord, hearken unto me: the land [is worth] four hundred shekels of silver; what [is] that betwixt me and thee? bury therefore thy dead.
16 Et Abraham entendit Ephron. Et Abraham pesa à Ephron l'argent qu'il avait indiqué aux oreilles des fils de Heth, quatre cents sicles d'argent ayant cours chez le marchand.
And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current [money] with the merchant.
17 Et ainsi fut constitué le champ d'Ephron à Macpéla à l'orient de Mamré (le champ et la grotte y comprise et tous les arbres qui étaient dans le champ et se trouvaient entre toutes ses limites dans son enceinte)
And the field of Ephron, which [was] in Machpelah, which [was] before Mamre, the field, and the cave which [was] therein, and all the trees that [were] in the field, that [were] in all the borders round about, were made sure
18 à Abraham comme propriété aux yeux des fils de Heth, en présence de tous ceux qui passaient par la porte de la ville.
Unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city.
19 Et après cela Abraham donna la sépulture à Sarah, sa femme, dans la grotte du champ de Macpéla à l'orient de Mamré, c'est-à-dire Hébron, au pays de Canaan.
And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same [is] Hebron in the land of Canaan.
20 Ainsi le champ et la grotte y comprise furent constitués à Abraham comme propriété sépulcrale par les fils de Heth.
And the field, and the cave that [is] therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a buryingplace by the sons of Heth.
