Exode 33

1 Et l'Éternel dit à Moïse: Porte-toi d'ici, toi et le peuple que tu as tiré du pays d'Egypte, vers le pays que j'ai promis par serment à Abraham et à Isaac et à Jacob en disant: Je le donnerai à ta postérité:

And the LORD said unto Moses, Depart, [and] go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it:

2 et je te ferai précéder par un ange, et je chasserai les Cananéens, les Amoréens et les Héthiens et les Phérisiens et les Hévites et les Jébusites;

And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:

3 vers le pays découlant de lait et de miel; car je ne serai point parmi vous durant le trajet, parce que vous êtes un peuple au col roide, de peur que je ne vous consume en chemin.

Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou [art] a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way.

4 Et le peuple ayant entendu ce sinistre langage prit le deuil et personne ne se couvrit de ses ornements.

And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.

5 Et l'Éternel dit à Moïse: Dis aux enfants d'Israël: Vous êtes un peuple au col roide; si je faisais un seul instant route avec vous, je vous détruirais. Et maintenant dépose tes ornements, et je verrai ce que j'ai à te faire.

For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye [are] a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.

6 Les enfants d'Israël se dépouillèrent donc de leurs ornements, après s'être éloignés du mont Horeb.

And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.

7 Et Moïse prit la Tente et se la dressa en dehors du camp, à distance du camp; et il l'appela Tente du Rendez-vous. Et tous ceux qui cherchaient l'Éternel se rendaient à la Tente du Rendez-vous qui se trouvait en dehors du camp.

And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, [that] every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which [was] without the camp.

8 Et lorsque Moïse se rendait à la Tente, tout le peuple se levait, et chacun se tenait debout à la porte de sa propre tente, et suivait Moïse du regard jusqu'à son arrivée à la Tente.

And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, [that] all the people rose up, and stood every man [at] his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.

9 Et lorsque Moïse arrivait à la Tente, la colonne de nuée descendait et se posait à l'entrée de la Tente, et Il s'entretenait avec Moïse.

And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood [at] the door of the tabernacle, and [the LORD] talked with Moses.

10 Et tout le peuple voyait la colonne de nuée qui se tenait à l'entrée de la Tente, et tout le peuple se levait, et chacun se prosternait à l'entrée de sa propre tente.

And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand [at] the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man [in] his tent door.

11 Et l'Éternel parlait à Moïse face à face, comme un homme parle à son ami; puis il revenait au camp; mais Josué, fils de Nun, jeune homme qui le servait, ne quittait point l'intérieur de la Tente.

And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.

12 Et Moïse dit à l'Éternel: Voici, tu me dis: Mène ce peuple en avant! et tu ne me fais pas connaître qui tu veux envoyer avec moi, et cependant tu m'as dit: Je te connais nommément, et tu as aussi trouvé grâce à mes yeux.

And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.

13 Eh bien! puisque j'ai pu trouver grâce à tes yeux, daigne me faire connaître ta voie pour que je te connaisse, afin de trouver grâce à tes yeux, et considère que cette nation est ton peuple.

Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation [is] thy people.

14 Et Il dit: Tu seras accompagné de ma présence et je t'amènerai au repos.

And he said, My presence shall go [with thee], and I will give thee rest.

15 Et il Lui répondit: Si tu ne nous accompagnes pas de ta présence, ne nous fais point partir d'ici.

And he said unto him, If thy presence go not [with me], carry us not up hence.

16 Et comment sera-t-il notoire que j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, moi et ton peuple? n'est-ce pas si tu nous accompagnes, et si nous sommes distingués moi et ton peuple de tous les peuples qui sont sur la face de la terre?

For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? [is it] not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that [are] upon the face of the earth.

17 Et l'Éternel dit à Moïse: Je ferai aussi cela même que tu viens de dire; car tu as trouvé grâce à mes yeux, et je te connais nommément.

And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.

18 Et Moïse reprit: Fais-moi donc contempler ta gloire!

And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.

19 Et l'Éternel dit: Je ferai passer toute ma beauté devant ta face et nommerai le nom de l'Éternel devant toi; aussi bien je suis propice à qui je suis propice, et miséricordieux pour qui je suis miséricordieux.

And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.

20 Et Il dit: Tu ne saurais contempler ma face, car l'homme ne peut me voir et vivre.

And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.

21 Et l'Éternel dit: J'ai près de moi un lieu: tu t'y tiendras sur le rocher,

And the LORD said, Behold, [there is] a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:

22 et quand ma gloire passera, je te placerai dans une cavité du rocher et je t'abriterai de ma main jusqu'à ce que je sois passé;

And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:

23 puis je retirerai ma main afin que tu me voies par derrière, mais ma face n'est pas visible.

And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
