Éphésiens 4

1 Je vous exhorte donc, moi, le prisonnier dans le seigneur, à vous conduire d'une manière digne de l'appel qui vous a été adressé,

I exhort you, therefore, I, the prisoner in the Lord, to walk in a manner worthy of the calling wherewith ye were called: —

2 avec toute espèce d'humilité et de mansuétude, avec longanimité, vous supportant les uns les autres avec charité,

With all lowliness and meekness, with long suffering, bearing one with another in love,

3 vous efforçant de conserver l'unité de l'esprit par le lien de la paix.

Giving diligence to keep—the oneness of the Spirit in the uniting-bond of peace, —

4 Il y a un seul corps et un seul Esprit, comme c'est à une seule espérance que se rapporte l'appel que vous avez reçu;

One body, and one spirit, even as ye were also called in one hope of your calling,

5 il y a un seul Seigneur, une seule foi, un seul baptême;

One Lord, one faith, one immersion,

6 il y a un seul Dieu, Père de tous, qui est au-dessus de tous, et, par tous, en tous.

One God and Father of all—who is over all, and through all, and in all.

7 Or à chacun de vous a été donnée la grâce selon la mesure du don de Christ;

To each one of you, however, hath favour been given, according to the measure of the free-gift of the Christ;

8 c'est pourquoi il est dit: « Après être monté en haut il a capturé des captifs, et il a donné des dons aux hommes. »

Wherefore he saith—Ascending on high, he took captivity captive, [and] gave gifts unto men.

9 Or l'expression « il est monté, » qu'emporte-t-elle, sinon qu'il est aussi descendu premièrement dans les parties plus basses de la terre?

Now this, He ascended; what is it, —save—that he also descended into the under parts of the earth?

10 Celui qui est descendu, c'est lui aussi qui est monté au-dessus de tous les deux, afin de remplir toutes choses;

He that descended, he, it is who also ascended over-above all the heavens, that he might fill all things;

11 et c'est lui qui a établi les uns comme apôtres, les autres comme prophètes, ceux-ci comme évangélistes, ceux-là comme pasteurs et docteurs,

And, he, gave—some, indeed, to be apostles, and some, prophets, and some, evangelists, and some, shepherds and teachers, —

12 afin d'accomplir, pour le perfectionnement des saints, l'œuvre du ministère, l'édification du corps de Christ,

With a view to the fitting of the saints for the work of ministering, for an upbuilding of the body of the Christ;

13 jusques à ce que, tous, nous soyons parvenus à l'unité de la foi et de la connaissance du fils de Dieu, à l'état d'homme fait, à la mesure de l'âge de la plénitude de Christ,

Until we all advance—into the oneness of the faith, and the personal knowledge of the Son of God, into a man of full-growth, into the measure of the stature of the fulness of the Christ;

14 afin que nous ne soyons plus des enfants, ballottés par les flots et emportés çà et là par tous les souffles de l'enseignement, grâce à la tricherie des hommes, à la fourberie qui favorise les manœuvres de l'erreur,

That we may, no longer, be infants—billow-tossed and shifted round with every wind of teaching, —in the craft of men, in knavery suited to the artifice of error;

15 mais que, proclamant la vérité avec charité, nous croissions à tous égards en celui qui est le chef, Christ,

But, pursuing truth—may, in love, grow into him in all things, —who is the head, Christ, —

16 par l'assistance duquel le corps entier, bien uni et bien compact, travaille à sa propre croissance, sous l'action multiple de cette assistance, avec une efficace proportionnée à chacune de ses parties, pour s'édifier lui-même dans la charité.

Out of whom all the body—fitly framing itself together, and connecting itself, through means of every joint of supply, by way of energising in the measure of each single part—secureth the growing of the body, unto an upbuilding of itself in love.

17 Je dis donc, et j'en atteste le seigneur, que vous ne devez plus vous conduire comme les Gentils se conduisent dans l'inanité de leur intelligence,

This, therefore, am I saying and protesting in the Lord: —that, no longer, ye walk even as, the nations, walk—in the vanity of their minds,

18 ayant l'entendement offusqué de ténèbres, étant étrangers à la vie de Dieu à cause de l'ignorance qui est en eux, à cause de l'endurcissement de leur cœur;

Being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God—by reason of the ignorance that existeth within them, by reason of their hearts being turned into stone,

19 en sorte que, devenus insensibles, ils se sont livrés à la débauche, pour commettre avec excès toute espèce d'impureté.

Who, indeed, having become past feeling, have delivered, themselves, up, with wantonness, unto making a trade of all impurity with greed.

20 Mais, pour vous, ce n'est pas ainsi que vous avez appris Christ,

Ye, however, have, not thus, learned the Christ: —

21 si, en effet, vous avez ouï parler de lui, et si c'est en lui que vous avez été instruits, selon que la vérité existe en Jésus,

If, at least, it is, him, ye have heard, and, in him, ye have been taught—even as truth is in Jesus, —

22 à dépouiller, en opposition à votre précédente conduite, le vieil homme qui se corrompt sous l'influence des convoitises que produit l'erreur,

That ye were to strip off—as regardeth the former behaviour—the old man, who corrupteth himself according to his deceitful covetings,

23 et à être renouvelés par l'Esprit dans votre intelligence,

And were to be getting young again in the spirit of your mind,

24 et à revêtir le nouvel homme, qui a été créé à l'image de Dieu avec la justice et la sainteté que produit la vérité.

And were to put on the man of new mould, who, after God, hath been created in his truthful righteousness and loving kindness.

25 C'est pourquoi, ayant dépouillé, le mensonge, parlez avec vérité, chacun à votre prochain, car nous sommes membres les uns des autres.

Wherefore, stripping off what is false, be speaking truth each one with his neighbour, because we are members one of another;

26 Soyez en colère, et toutefois ne péchez pas;

Be ye angry, and not committing sin, let not the sun be going down upon your angry mood,

27 que le soleil ne se couche pas sur votre courroux, et ne donnez pas non plus de prise au diable.

Neither be giving place unto the adversary;

28 Que le larron ne dérobe plus, mais que plutôt il prenne de la peine en travaillant de ses mains à ce qui est bien, afin qu'il ait de quoi donner à celui qui est dans le besoin.

Let, the stealer, no more, steal, but rather let him be toiling, —working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have [wherewith] to be giving away to him that hath need;

29 Qu'aucune mauvaise parole ne sorte de votre bouche, mais seulement celle qui peut être bonne pour l'édification selon le besoin, afin qu'elle soit un bienfait pour les auditeurs,

Let, no putrid discourse, out of your mouth, be going forth, but if anything is good—suited to the needful upbuilding, —that it may give benefit unto them that hear;

30 n'attristez point l'esprit saint de Dieu, par lequel vous avez été scellés pour le jour de la rédemption.

And be not grieving the Holy Spirit of God, wherewith ye have been sealed unto a day of redemption;

31 Que toute espèce d'aigreur, et d'irritation, et de colère, et de cris, et de calomnie, soit enlevée du milieu de vous, ainsi que toute espèce de méchanceté.

All bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and outcry, and profane speaking, let it be taken away from you, with all baseness;

32 Devenez bons les uns pour les autres, compatissants, vous pardonnant réciproquement comme Dieu aussi nous a pardonné en Christ;

And be ye gracious one to another, tenderly affectionate, in favour forgiving one another—even as, God also, in Christ, hath in favour forgiven you;
