Ecclésiaste 10
1 Des mouches mortes font exhaler une odeur fétide à l'huile du parfumeur; un peu de folie a la prépondérance sur la sagesse et l'honneur.
Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: [so doth] a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom [and] honour.
2 La raison du sage est à sa droite; la raison du fou est à sa gauche.
A wise man’s heart [is] at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left.
3 Quelle que soit la voie que suive le fou, il manque de sens, et il dit à chacun qu'il est un fou.
Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth [him], and he saith to every one [that] he [is] a fool.
4 Si la colère du souverain s'élève contre toi, ne cède pas la place, car le calme fait céder de grands péchés.
If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.
5 Il est un mal que j'ai vu sous le soleil, par l'effet d'une méprise qui procède du prince:
There is an evil [which] I have seen under the sun, as an error [which] proceedeth from the ruler:
6 la folie est placée en très haut lieu, et des riches sont assis en lieu bas.
Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
7 J'ai vu des esclaves montés sur des chevaux, et des princes marchant à pied comme des esclaves. –
I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.
8 Celui qui creuse une fosse, y tombera; et celui qui fait une brèche à un mur, sera mordu par un serpent.
He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
9 Celui qui remue des pierres, s'y fera mal, et celui qui fend du bois, se risque;
Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; [and] he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.
10 si le fer est émoussé, et qu'il n'en affile pas le tranchant, il lui faudra un effort plus grand; mais la sagesse a l'avantage de donner l'adresse.
If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom [is] profitable to direct.
11 Si le serpent mord quand il n'est pas enchanté, l'enchanteur ne sert à rien. –
Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.
12 Les discours de la bouche du sage ont la grâce; mais le fou est la victime de ses propres lèvres;
The words of a wise man’s mouth [are] gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
13 le début des paroles de sa bouche est folie, et la fin de son discours est un délire malfaisant.
The beginning of the words of his mouth [is] foolishness: and the end of his talk [is] mischievous madness.
14 Et le fou prodigue les paroles; [cependant] l'homme ignore l'avenir, et qui lui découvre ce qui aura lieu après lui?
A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?
15 Le travail du fou le fatigue, car il ne sait pas trouver le chemin de la ville. –
The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
16 Malheur à toi, pays, qui as pour roi un enfant, et dont les princes se mettent à table dès le matin!
Woe to thee, O land, when thy king [is] a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
17 Bonheur à toi, pays, qui as pour roi un fils de noble race, et dont les princes se mettent à table en temps convenable, pour se restaurer, et non pour boire!
Blessed [art] thou, O land, when thy king [is] the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
18 Quand il y a paresse, la charpente se disloque; et, quand les mains sont lâches, le logis a des voies d'eau. –
By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.
19 On apprête un festin pour se réjouir, et le vin égaie les vivants; et l'argent répond à tout. –
A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all [things].
20 Même dans ta pensée ne maudis pas le roi; et au fond de la chambre où tu couches, ne maudis pas le riche! Car l'oiseau du ciel emportera tes propos, et le volatile ailé publiera tes discours.
Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
