Actes 16
1 puis il se rendit aussi à Derbe, et à Lystre. Et voici, là se trouvait un disciple nommé Timothée, fils d'une femme juive croyante, mais d'un père grec,
And he came also to Derbe and to Lystra: and behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewess that believed; but his father was a Greek.
2 et auquel les frères de Lystre et d'Icône rendaient un bon témoignage.
The same was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.
3 Paul voulut l'emmener avec lui, et, se l'étant attaché, il le circoncit à cause des Juifs qui étaient dans ces lieux-là, car tous savaient que son père était grec.
Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and he took and circumcised him because of the Jews that were in those parts: for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
4 Or, dans les villes qu'ils traversaient, ils transmirent, pour qu'on les observât, les décrets rendus par les apôtres et les anciens de Jérusalem.
And as they went on their way through the cities, they delivered them the decrees to keep which had been ordained of the apostles and elders that were at Jerusalem.
5 Quant aux églises, elles s'affermissaient donc dans la foi et croissaient en nombre de jour en jour.
So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.
6 Cependant ils traversèrent la Phrygie et le pays de Galatie, après avoir été empêchés par le saint esprit d'annoncer la parole en Asie;
And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden of the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia;
7 mais, étant arrivés près de la Mysie, ils se préparaient à entrer en Bithynie, et l'esprit de Jésus ne le leur permit pas;
and when they were come over against Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia; and the Spirit of Jesus suffered them not;
8 alors, franchissant la Mysie, ils descendirent à Troas,
and passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.
9 et une vision apparut de nuit à Paul: un Macédonien se tenait debout et le sollicitait en disant: « Passe en Macédoine pour nous secourir. »
And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: There was a man of Macedonia standing, beseeching him, and saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.
10 Or, quand il eut vu la vision, nous cherchâmes aussitôt à parvenir en Macédoine, concluant que Dieu nous avait appelés à leur annoncer la bonne nouvelle.
And when he had seen the vision, straightway we sought to go forth into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel unto them.
11 Étant donc partis de Troas, nous cinglâmes rapidement vers la Samothrace, et le lendemain nous arrivâmes à Néapolis,
Setting sail therefore from Troas, we made a straight course to Samothrace, and the day following to Neapolis;
12 et de là à Philippes, qui est la première ville d'un district de Macédoine, et une colonie. Nous restâmes quelques jours dans cette ville,
and from thence to Philippi, which is a city of Macedonia, the first of the district, a [Roman] colony: and we were in this city tarrying certain days.
13 et le jour du sabbat nous vînmes, hors de la porte, près d'une rivière où nous pensions que se trouvait un lieu de prière, et nous étant assis nous parlions aux femmes qui y étaient rassemblées.
And on the sabbath day we went forth without the gate by a river side, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down, and spake unto the women that were come together.
14 Et une femme, nommée Lydie, marchande de pourpre de la ville de Thyatire, révérant Dieu, nous écoutait, et le Seigneur ouvrit son cœur pour qu'elle prêtât attention à ce que disait Paul.
And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, one that worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened to give heed unto the things which were spoken by Paul.
15 Or, dès qu'elle eut été baptisée ainsi que sa famille, elle nous sollicitait en disant: « Puisque vous avez jugé que j'avais foi au Seigneur, venez demeurer chez moi; » et elle nous y contraignit.
And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide [there]. And she constrained us.
16 Or, il advint, pendant que nous nous acheminions vers le lieu de prière, qu'une certaine servante possédée d'un esprit ventriloque, laquelle procurait à ses maîtres un profit considérable par ses divinations, nous rencontra.
And it came to pass, as we were going to the place of prayer, that a certain maid having a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much gain by soothsaying.
17 Cette femme, se mettant à suivre Paul et nous, s'écriait: « Ces hommes-là sont des serviteurs du Dieu très haut, qui vous annoncent le chemin du salut. »
The same following after Paul and us cried out, saying, These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim unto you the way of salvation.
18 Or elle fit cela pendant plusieurs jours; mais Paul, importuné, se retourna et dit à l'esprit: « Je t'ordonne, au nom de Jésus-Christ, de sortir d'elle; » et il sortit au moment même.
And this she did for many days. But Paul, being sore troubled, turned and said to the spirit, I charge thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And it came out that very hour.
19 Et ses maîtres, ayant vu que l'espoir de leur profit s'en était allé, se saisirent de Paul et de Silas, les traînèrent sur la place publique devant les magistrats,
But when her masters saw that the hope of their gain was gone, they laid hold on Paul and Silas, and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers,
20 et, après les avoir amenés aux préteurs, ils dirent: « Ces hommes-là troublent notre ville; ce sont des Juifs,
and when they had brought them unto the magistrates, they said, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,
21 et ils proclament des coutumes qu'il ne nous est permis, ni de recevoir, ni de suivre, nous qui sommes Romains. »
and set forth customs which it is not lawful for us to receive, or to observe, being Romans.
22 Et la foule se souleva aussi contre eux, et les préteurs, leur ayant fait arracher leurs vêtements, ordonnèrent qu'on les battît de verges;
And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent their garments off them, and commanded to beat them with rods.
23 puis, après leur avoir fait infliger plusieurs coups, ils les jetèrent en prison, en enjoignant au geôlier de les tenir sous bonne garde;
And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:
24 celui-ci, après avoir reçu cette injonction, les jeta dans la prison intérieure et fixa leurs pieds dans les ceps.
who, having received such a charge, cast them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
25 Or, sur le minuit, Paul et Silas étant en prière, chantaient des hymnes à Dieu, et les prisonniers les entendaient;
But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns unto God, and the prisoners were listening to them;
26 mais, tout à coup, il se fit un grand tremblement de terre, en sorte que les fondements de la prison en furent ébranlés; puis toutes les portes s'ouvrirent et les chaînes de tous se détachèrent.
and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison-house were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened; and every one’s bands were loosed.
27 Et le geôlier s'étant éveillé, et ayant vu les portes de la prison ouvertes, tira son épée, et il était sur le point de se tuer, croyant que les prisonniers s'étaient enfuis;
And the jailor, being roused out of sleep and seeing the prison doors open, drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.
28 mais Paul l'appela à haute voix en disant: « Ne te fais aucun mal; car nous sommes tous ici. »
But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.
29 Et ayant demandé de la lumière, il s'élança et se jeta tout tremblant aux pieds de Paul et de Silas,
And he called for lights and sprang in, and, trembling for fear, fell down before Paul and Silas,
30 et, les ayant fait sortir, il dit: « Seigneurs, que faut-il que je fasse pour être sauvé? »
and brought them out and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
31 Et ils lui dirent: « Crois au seigneur Jésus, et tu seras sauvé, toi et ta famille; »
And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved, thou and thy house.
32 et ils lui annoncèrent la parole de Dieu, ainsi qu'à tous ceux qui étaient dans sa maison.
And they spake the word of the Lord unto him, with all that were in his house.
33 Et, les ayant pris avec lui à ce moment même de la nuit, il lava leurs plaies, et lui-même fut baptisé immédiatement ainsi que tous les siens;
And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, immediately.
34 puis, les ayant conduits chez lui, il leur servit un repas, et il fut tout réjoui d'avoir cru en Dieu avec toute sa famille.
And he brought them up into his house, and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly, with all his house, having believed in God.
35 Cependant, quand le jour fut venu, les préteurs dépêchèrent leurs licteurs, en disant: « Élargis ces hommes-là. «
But when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go.
36 Or le geôlier transmit le message à Paul, en disant: « Les préteurs ont envoyé l'ordre de vous élargir; maintenant donc sortez, et allez en paix. »
And the jailor reported the words to Paul, [saying], The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore come forth, and go in peace.
37 Mais Paul leur dit: « Après nous avoir fait battre de verges en public, sans jugement, nous qui sommes des Romains, ils nous ont jetés en prison, et maintenant ils nous font sortir secrètement! Non certes! Mais qu'ils viennent eux-mêmes nous mettre en liberté. «
But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men that are Romans, and have cast us into prison; and do they now cast us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and bring us out.
38 Les licteurs rapportèrent ces paroles aux préteurs, et ils furent effrayés en apprenant qu'ils étaient Romains,
And the serjeants reported these words unto the magistrates: and they feared when they heard that they were Romans;
39 et ils vinrent les apaiser, et, après les avoir fait sortir, ils les prièrent de quitter la ville.
and they came and besought them; and when they had brought them out, they asked them to go away from the city.
40 Mais, quand ils furent sortis de la prison, ils entrèrent chez Lydie, et, après avoir vu et exhorté les frères, ils partirent.
And they went out of the prison, and entered into [the house of] Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.
