1 Timothée 6

1 Que tous les esclaves qui sont sous le joug envisagent leurs propres maîtres comme dignes de tout respect, afin que le nom de Dieu et l'enseignement ne soient l'objet d'aucune calomnie;

Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine may not be blasphemed.

2 et, d'un autre côté, que ceux qui ont des fidèles pour maîtres ne les méprisent pas parce que ce sont des frères, mais qu'ils les servent d'autant mieux que ceux qui profitent de leur bonne conduite sont des fidèles et des bien-aimés. Voilà ce que tu dois enseigner et prescrire.

And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.

3 Si quelqu'un enseigne une autre doctrine, et n'adhère pas aux saines paroles de notre seigneur Jésus-Christ et à l'enseignement conforme à la piété,

If any man teacheth otherwise, and agreeth not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the doctrine which is according to godliness;

4 il est enflé d'orgueil, ne sachant rien, mais étant maladivement épris de disputes et de querelles de mots, d'où résultent l'envie, les querelles, les calomnies, les mauvais soupçons,

He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, from which cometh envy, strife, railings, evil suspicions,

5 les vaines discussions d'hommes dont l'intelligence est corrompue, et qui sont privés de la vérité, parce qu'ils envisagent la piété comme une source de revenu.

Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing gain to be godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

6 Il est vrai que la piété, accompagnée de contentement, est une grande source de revenu;

But godliness with contentment is great gain.

7 car nous n'avons rien apporté en ce monde, parce que nous n'en pouvons non plus rien emporter;

For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

8 mais si nous avons de quoi vivre et nous couvrir, cela nous suffira;

And having food and raiment with these let us be content.

9 tandis que ceux qui veulent s'enrichir tombent dans la tentation, et dans des pièges, et dans une foule de convoitises insensées et funestes qui précipitent les hommes dans la ruine et la perdition;

But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

10 car l'amour de l'argent est la racine de tous les maux; possédés de cette passion, certains hommes se sont détournés de la foi et se sont transpercés eux-mêmes de douleurs infinies.

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some have coveted, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

11 Mais, pour toi, ô homme de Dieu, fuis ces choses, mais recherche la justice, la piété, la foi, la charité, le support, la douceur;

But thou, O man of God, flee from these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

12 combats le bon combat de la foi; saisis la vie éternelle à laquelle tu as été appelé, et pour laquelle tu as fait cette belle confession devant de nombreux témoins. (aiōnios g166)

Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. (aiōnios g166)

13 Je t'enjoins, devant Dieu qui appelle toutes choses à l'existence, et devant Christ Jésus qui a prononcé devant Ponce Pilate cette belle confession,

I command thee in the sight of God, who maketh alive all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;

14 d'observer le commandement qui t'est fait, sans tache et sans reproche, jusques à l'apparition de notre seigneur Jésus-Christ,

That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:

15 que manifestera, au temps convenable, le bienheureux et unique Souverain, le roi de ceux qui règnent, et le seigneur de ceux qui commandent,

Who in his times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

16 le seul qui possède l'immortalité, qui habite une lumière inaccessible, que nul homme n'a vu ni ne peut voir, auquel appartiennent l'honneur et la puissance éternelle. Amen! (aiōnios g166)

Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. (aiōnios g166)

17 Enjoins aux riches dans le présent siècle de ne point s'enorgueillir, et de ne pas non plus fonder leur espoir sur l'incertitude de la richesse, mais sur Dieu qui nous procure richement toutes choses pour notre usage; (aiōn g165)

Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; (aiōn g165)

18 enjoins-leur de faire de bonnes actions, d'être riches en bonnes œuvres, d'être généreux, libéraux,

That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to share;

19 s'amassant, pour l'avenir, un trésor établi sur un fondement solide, afin d'entrer en possession de la véritable vie.

Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

20 O Timothée, garde le dépôt, en évitant les bavardages profanes et la polémique de la fausse science,

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

21 dont font profession certains hommes qui se sont ainsi éloignés de la foi. Que la grâce soit avec vous!

Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen. The first to Timothy was written from Laodicea, which is the chiefest city of Phrygia Pacatiana.
