1 Cependant Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, ayant trente-deux rois pour auxiliaires, rassembla toutes ses forces, et chevaux et chars, et il s'avança, et mit le siège devant Samarie et l'attaqua.
Ben Hadad king of Aram gathered all his army together. There were thirty-two lesser kings with him, and horses and chariots. He went up, besieged Samaria and fought against it.
2 Et il envoya des messagers à Achab, roi d'Israël, dans la ville
He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel, and said to him, “Ben Hadad says this:
3 et lui tint ce langage: Ainsi parle Ben-Hadad: Je suis maître de ton argent et de ton or, maître de tes femmes et de tes fils, de tes meilleurs biens.
'Your silver and your gold are mine. Also your wives and children, the best ones, are now mine.'”
4 Et le roi d'Israël répondit et dit: Comme tu le dis, roi mon seigneur, tu es maître de ma personne et de tout ce que j'ai.
The king of Israel answered and said, “It is as you say, my master, king. I and all that I have are yours.”
5 Et les messagers revinrent et dirent: Ainsi parle Ben-Hadad: Si je t'ai envoyé dire: Livre-moi ton argent et ton or, et tes femmes et tes fils,
The messengers came again and said, “Ben Hadad says this, 'I sent word to you saying that you must give me your silver, your gold, your wives, and your children.
6 c'est que demain à pareille heure j'enverrai chez toi mes serviteurs pour fouiller ta maison et les maisons de tes serviteurs et mettre la main sur tout ce qui charme tes yeux et l'enlever.
But I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they will search your house and your servants' houses. They will seize with their own hands and take away whatever pleases their eyes.'”
7 Alors le roi d'Israël fit assembler tous les Anciens du pays et dit: Sachez donc et considérez qu'il cherche [notre] ruine, puisqu'il m'a envoyé une sommation par rapport à mes femmes et à mes fils, et à mon argent et à mon or que je ne lui ai point refusé.
Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land together and said, “Please take note and see how this man seeks trouble. He has sent word to me in order to take my wives, children, and silver and gold, and I have not refused him.”
8 Et tous les Anciens et tout le peuple lui dirent: N'obéis point et ne consens point!
All the elders and all the people said to Ahab, “Do not listen to him or consent to his demands.”
9 Il dit donc aux messagers de Ben-Hadad: Dites à mon seigneur le roi: Je ferai tout ce que tu as demandé à ton serviteur en premier lieu, mais ceci, je ne saurais le faire.
So Ahab said to the messengers of Ben Hadad, “Tell my master the king, 'I agree to everything that you sent your servant to do the first time, but I cannot accept this second demand.'” So the messengers left and took this response to Ben Hadad.
10 Et les messagers partirent et reportèrent la réponse. Alors Ben-Hadad députa vers lui pour lui dire: Qu'ainsi me fassent les dieux et pis encore, si la poussière de Samarie suffit à remplir les mains de tout le monde qui me suit!
Then Ben Hadad sent his reply to Ahab, and said, “May the gods do so to me and more also, if even the ashes of Samaria will be enough for all the people who follow me to have a handful each.”
11 Et le roi d'Israël répondit et dit: Celui qui se ceint ne doit pas se vanter comme celui qui se déceint.
The king of Israel answered and said, “Tell Ben Hadad, 'No one who is just putting on his armor, should boast as if he were taking it off.'”
12 Et Ben-Hadad entendant cette réponse (or il était à boire avec les rois dans les pavillons) dit à ses serviteurs: Faites les dispositions! Et ils firent les dispositions pour l'assaut de la ville.
Ben Hadad heard this message as he was drinking, he and the kings under him who were in their tents. Ben Hadad commanded his men, “Line yourselves up in position for battle.” So they prepared themselves in position of battle to attack the city.
13 Et voilà qu'un prophète s'approcha d'Achab, roi d'Israël, et dit: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: As-tu vu toute cette grande multitude? Eh bien! Je vais aujourd'hui la livrer à tes mains, afin que tu saches que je suis l'Éternel.
Then behold, a prophet came to Ahab king of Israel and said, “Yahweh says, 'Have you seen this great army? Look, I will place it into your hand today, and you will know that I am Yahweh.'”
14 Et Achab dit: Par qui? Et il reprit: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Par les valets des chefs des provinces. Et Achab dit: Qui engagera le combat? Et il répondit: Toi.
Ahab replied, “By whom?” Yahweh replied and said, “By the young officers who serve the governors of the districts.” Then Ahab said, “Who will begin the battle?” Yahweh answered, “You.”
15 Alors il passa en revue les valets des chefs des provinces et il s'en trouva deux cent trente-deux. Et après eux il passa en revue toutes les troupes, tous les enfants d'Israël, au nombre de sept mille.
Then Ahab mustered the young officers who served the governors of the districts. They numbered 232. After them he mustered all the soldiers, all the army of Israel; seven thousand in number.
16 Et ils firent leur sortie à midi. Cependant Ben-Hadad buvait à être ivre dans les pavillons avec les trente-deux rois, ses auxiliaires.
They went out at noon. Ben Hadad had been drinking himself drunk in his tent, he and the thirty-two lesser kings who were supporting him.
17 Et les valets des chefs des provinces sortirent les premiers. Alors Ben-Hadad fit aller aux informations, et il reçut ce rapport: Des gens ont fait une sortie de Samarie.
The young officers who served the governors of the districts went forward first. Then Ben Hadad was informed by scouts that he had sent out, “Men are coming out from Samaria.”
18 Et il dit: S'ils sont sortis pour la paix, saisissez-les vivants, et, s'ils sont sortis pour le combat, saisissez-les vivants.
Ben Hadad said, “Whether they have come out for peace or war, take them alive.”
19 Ceux-là donc sortirent de la place, les valets des chefs des provinces, puis l'armée qui les suivait.
So the young officers who served the governors of the districts went out of the city and the army followed them.
20 Et ils battirent chacun son homme, et les Syriens prirent la fuite, et les Israélites les poursuivirent, et Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, se sauva sur son cheval avec des cavaliers.
Each man killed his opponent. The Arameans fled and Israel pursued them. Ben Hadad the king of Aram escaped on a horse along with some horsemen.
21 Et le roi d'Israël se mit en mouvement, et mit en déroute les chevaux et les chars, et fit essuyer aux Syriens une grande défaite.
Then the king of Israel went out and attacked the horses and chariots, and killed the Arameans in a great slaughter.
22 Alors le prophète s'approcha du roi d'Israël et lui dit: Allons! sois résolu! songe et avise à ce que tu feras; car, au retour de l'année, le roi de Syrie marchera contre toi.
So the prophet came to the king of Israel and said to him, “Go, strengthen yourself, and understand and plan what you are doing, because at the return of the year the king of Aram will come up against you again.”
23 Et les serviteurs du roi de Syrie lui dirent: Leurs dieux sont les dieux des montagnes; c'est pourquoi ils l'ont emporté sur nous; mais peut-être nous battant avec eux dans la plaine l'emporterons-nous sur eux.
The servants of the king of Aram said to him, “Their god is a god of the hills. That is why they were stronger than we were. But now let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we will be stronger than they are.
24 Or, voici ce que tu as à faire: ôte chacun des rois de sa position, et mets les gouverneurs à leur place,
So you must do this: Remove all the kings from their positions of authority and replace them with military commanders.
25 et toi, lève une armée égale à celle que tu as perdue, et autant de cavalerie que tu avais de cavalerie, et autant de chars que tu avais de chars, et fais-nous combattre avec eux dans la plaine; peut-être l'emporterons-nous sur eux. Et il écouta leurs avis et fit ainsi.
Raise up an army like the army you lost—horse for horse and chariot for chariot—so we can fight them in the plain. Then surely we will be stronger than they are.” So Ben Hadad listened to their advice and did what they advised.
26 Et, au retour de l'année, Ben-Hadad passa les Syriens en revue et s'avança jusqu'à Aphek pour se mesurer avec Israël.
After the beginning of the new year, Ben Hadad mustered the Arameans and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.
27 Et les enfants d'Israël furent aussi passés en revue et avitaillés, et ils marchèrent à leur rencontre, et les enfants d'Israël campèrent en face d'eux, pareils à deux petits troupeaux de chèvres, tandis que les Syriens remplissaient le pays.
The people of Israel were mustered and supplied to fight against them. The people of Israel camped before them like two little flocks of goats, but the Arameans filled the countryside.
28 Alors l'homme de Dieu s'approcha et parla au roi d'Israël en ces termes: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Parce que les Syriens ont dit: L'Éternel est Dieu des montagnes, mais non Dieu des vallées, je livrerai toute cette grande multitude-là à tes mains, afin que vous sachiez que je suis l'Éternel.
Then a man of God came near and spoke to the king of Israel and said, “Yahweh says: 'Because the Arameans have said that Yahweh is a god of the hills, but he is not a god of the valleys, I will place this great army into your hand, and you will know that I am Yahweh.'”
29 Et ils furent campés les uns vis-à-vis des autres pendant sept jours, et le septième jour il y eut rencontre en bataille, et les enfants d'Israël tuèrent aux Syriens cent mille hommes de pied en une journée.
So the armies camped opposite each other for seven days. Then on the seventh day the battle started. The people of Israel killed 100,000 Aramean footmen in one day.
30 Et les survivants s'enfuirent à Aphek dans la ville, et la muraille croula sur vingt-sept mille hommes, les survivants, et Ben-Hadad s'enfuit, et étant entré dans la ville, il allait de chambre en chambre.
The rest fled to Aphek, into the city, and the wall fell on twenty-seven thousand men who were left. Ben Hadad fled and went into the city, into an inner room.
31 Alors ses serviteurs lui dirent: Voici, nous avons appris que les rois de la maison d'Israël sont des rois cléments; entourons donc nos reins de cilices et nos têtes de cordes, et présentons-nous au roi d'Israël; peut-être te laissera-t-il la vie.
Ben Hadad's servants said to him, “Look now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Please let us put sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads, and go out to the king of Israel. Perhaps he will spare your life.”
32 Et ils ceignirent leurs reins de cilices, et leurs têtes de cordes, et ils parurent devant le roi d'Israël et dirent: Ton serviteur Ben-Hadad dit: Laisse-moi la vie! Et il répondit: Est-il encore vivant? Il est mon frère!
So they put sackcloth on their waists and ropes around their heads and then went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben Hadad said, 'Please let me live.'” Ahab said, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”
33 Et ces hommes reçurent cela comme un bon augure, et ils se hâtèrent de le prendre au mot et dirent: Ben-Hadad est donc ton frère! Et il répondit: Venez! amenez-le. Alors Ben-Hadad se présenta à lui et il le fit monter à côté de lui sur son char.
Now the men were listening for any sign from Ahab, so they quickly answered him, “Yes, your brother Ben Hadad is alive.” Then Ahab said, “Go and bring him.” Then Ben Hadad came to him, and Ahab had him come up into his chariot.
34 Et [Ben-Hadad] lui dit: Je te restituerai les villes que mon père a enlevées à ton père, et tu auras tes rues à Damas, comme mon père avait ses rues à Samarie. Et moi [dit Achab], je te laisserai aller sous la foi d'une alliance. Et il lui accorda une capitulation et le laissa partir.
Ben Hadad said to Ahab, “I will restore to you the cities that my father took from your father, and you may make markets for yourself in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.” Ahab replied, “I will let you go with this covenant.” So Ahab made a covenant with him and then let him go.
35 Or, l'un des fils des prophètes dit à son condisciple par ordre de l'Éternel: Bats-moi donc! Mais l'autre refusa de le battre.
A certain man, one of the sons of the prophets, said to one of his fellow prophets by the word of Yahweh, “Please hit me.” But the man refused to hit him.
36 Alors il dit à celui-ci: Parce que tu n'as pas obéi à la voix de l'Éternel, voici, quand tu m'auras quitté, tu seras abattu par le lion. Et quand il l'eut quitté, le lion le rencontra et l'abattit.
Then the prophet said to his fellow prophet, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of Yahweh, as soon as you leave me, a lion will kill you.” As soon as that man had left him, a lion came upon him and killed him.
37 Et il trouva un autre homme à qui il dit: Bats-moi donc! Et l'homme le battit et le blessa.
Then the prophet found another man and said, “Please hit me.” So the man hit him and wounded him.
38 Alors le prophète alla se placer sur le chemin du roi, et il se déguisa en abaissant son turban sur ses yeux.
Then the prophet left and waited for the king by the road; he had disguised himself with a bandage over his eyes.
39 Et au passage du roi il cria vers lui et dit: Ton serviteur faisait son service dans la mêlée du combat, lorsque, voilà qu'un homme tire de côté, m'amenant un homme et me dit: Garde cet homme-ci. S'il vient à manquer, ta vie répondra de sa vie, ou bien tu paieras un talent d'argent.
As the king passed by, the prophet cried out to the king and said, “Your servant went out into the heat of the battle, and a soldier stopped and brought a man to me and said, 'Watch this man. If by any means he goes missing, your life will be given for his life, or you must pay a talent of silver.'
40 Et comme ton serviteur était occupé çà et là, l'homme disparut. Et le roi d'Israël lui dit: C'est ton jugement! Tu as décidé toi-même.
But because your servant was busy going here and there, the man escaped.” Then the king of Israel said to him, “This is what your punishment will be—you yourself have decided it.”
41 Alors vite il releva son turban de dessus ses yeux, et le roi d'Israël reconnut en lui l'un des prophètes.
Then the prophet quickly removed the bandage from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized that he was one of the prophets.
42 Et il dit au roi: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Parce que tu as laissé échapper de ta main l'homme que j'avais anathématisé, ta vie répondra de sa vie, et ton peuple, de son peuple.
The prophet said to the king, “Yahweh says, 'Because you have let go from your hand the man whom I had sentenced to death, your life will take the place of his life, and your people for his people.'”
43 Et le roi d'Israël rentra dans sa maison, chagrin et irrité, puis il gagna Samarie.
So the king of Israel went to his house resentful and angry, and arrived in Samaria.
