Luc 19
1 Jésus étant entré à Jéricho, traversa la ville.
Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town.
2 Et un homme riche, nommé Zachée, chef des publicains,
There was a man there, known by the name of Zacchaeus, who was a commissioner of taxes and a rich man.
3 cherchait à voir qui était Jésus, et il ne le pouvait à cause de la foule, car il était de petite taille.
He tried to see what Jesus was like; but, being short, he was unable to do so because of the crowd.
4 Il courut donc en avant, et monta sur un sycomore pour le voir, parce qu'il devait passer par là.
So he ran on ahead and climbed into a mulberry tree, to see Jesus, for he knew that he must pass that way.
5 Lorsque Jésus fut arrivé à cet endroit, il leva les yeux, et l'ayant aperçu, lui dit: «Zachée, hâte-toi de descendre, car il faut que je loge aujourd'hui chez toi.»
When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him: “Zacchaeus, be quick and come down, for I must stop at your house to-day.”
6 Zachée se hâta de descendre, et le reçut avec joie.
So Zacchaeus got down quickly, and joyfully welcomed him.
7 Voyant cela, tous murmuraient, et disaient: «Il est allé loger chez un homme pécheur.»
On seeing this, every one began to complain: “He has gone to stay with a man who is an outcast.”
8 Cependant Zachée se présentant devant le Seigneur, lui dit: «Voici, Seigneur, je donne la moitié de mes biens aux pauvres, et si j'ai fait tort à quelqu'un en quoi que ce soit, je lui rends le quadruple.»
But Zacchaeus stood forward and said to the Master: “Listen, Master! I will give half my property to the poor, and, if I have defrauded any one of anything, I will give him back four times as much.”
9 Jésus lui dit: «Le salut est venu aujourd'hui sur cette maison, parce que celui-ci est aussi un fils d'Abraham;
“Salvation has come to this house to-day,” answered Jesus, “for even this man is a son of Abraham.
10 car le Fils de l'homme est venu chercher et sauver ce qui était perdu.»
The Son of Man has come to ‘search for those who are lost’ and to save them.”
11 Comme on écoutait sa parole, il ajouta une parabole, parce qu'il était près de Jérusalem, et qu'on s'imaginait que le royaume de Dieu allait paraître immédiatement.
As the people were listening to this, Jesus went on to tell them a parable. He did so because he was near Jerusalem, and because they thought that the Kingdom of God was going to be proclaimed at once.
12 Il dit donc: «Un homme de haute naissance s'en alla dans un pays lointain, pour être investi de la royauté, et revenir ensuite.
He said: “A nobleman once went to a distant country to receive his appointment to a Kingdom and then return.
13 Il appela dix de ses serviteurs, leur donna dix mines, et leur dit: «Faites- les valoir, jusqu’à ce que je revienne.»
He called ten of his servants and gave them ten pounds each, and told them to trade with them during his absence.
14 Mais ses concitoyens, qui le haïssaient, envoyèrent une ambassade après lui, pour dire: «Nous ne voulons pas qu'il règne sur nous.»
But his subjects hated him and sent envoys after him to say ‘We will not have this man as our King.’
15 Quand il fut de retour, après avoir été investi de la royauté, il lit appeler ses serviteurs à qui il avait remis son argent, afin de connaître ceux qui l'avaient fait valoir, et ce qu'ils avaient gagné.
On his return, after having been appointed King, he directed that the servants to whom he had given his money should be summoned, so that he might learn what amount of trade they had done.
16 Le premier serviteur vint, et dit: «Seigneur, ta mine en a rapporté dix autres.»
The first came up, and said ‘Sir, your ten pounds have made a hundred.’
17 Et le roi lui dit: «C'est bien, bon serviteur, puisque tu as été fidèle dans une chose de minime valeur, reçois le gouvernement de dix villes.»
‘Well done, good servant!’ exclaimed the master. ‘As you have proved trustworthy in a very small matter, I appoint you governor over ten towns.’
18 Le second vint, et dit: «Seigneur, ta mine en a produit cinq autres.»
When the second came, he said ‘Your ten pounds, Sir, have produced fifty.’
19 Le roi lui dit de même: «Toi aussi, gouverne cinq villes.»
So the master said to him ‘And you I appoint over five towns.’
20 Le troisième vint et dit: «Seigneur, voici ta mine que j'ai gardée soigneusement dans un linge,
Another servant also came and said ‘Sir, here are your ten pounds; I have kept them put away in a handkerchief.
21 car je te craignais, parce que tu es un homme rigide: tu retires l'argent que tu n'as pas placé, et tu moissonnes ce que tu n'as pas semé.»
For I was afraid of you, because you are a stern man. You take what you have not planted, and reap what you have not sown.’
22 Le roi lui dit: «Mauvais serviteur, je te jugerai, sur tes propres paroles. Tu savais que je suis un homme rigide, qui retire l’argent qu'il n'a pas placé, et qui moissonne ce qu'il n'a pas semé!
The master answered ‘Out of your own mouth I judge you, you worthless servant. You knew that I am a stern man, that I take what I have not planted, and reap what I have not sown?
23 pourquoi donc n'as-tu pas mis mon argent dans une banque? et à mon retour, je l'aurais retiré avec intérêt.
Then why did not you put my money into a bank? And I, on my return, could have claimed it with interest.
24 Puis, il dit à ses gardes: «Otez-lui cette mine, et la donnez à celui qui en a dix.»
Take away from him the ten pounds,’ he said to those standing by, ‘and give them to the one who has the hundred.’
25 — Ils lui dirent: «Seigneur, il en a déjà dix.»
‘But, Sir,’ they interposed, ‘he has a hundred pounds already!’
26 — «Je vous dis que l'on donnera à tout homme qui a; quant à celui qui n'a pas, on lui ôtera même ce qu'il a...
‘I tell you,’ he answered, ‘that, to him who has, more will be given, but, from him who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away.
27 Seulement, amenez ici mes ennemis, ces gens qui n'ont pas voulu que je règne sur eux, et les égorgez en ma présence.»
But as for my enemies, these men who would not have me as their King, bring them here and put them to death in my presence.’”
28 Ayant ainsi parlé, Jésus se mit en marche, en tête de la foule, pour monter à Jérusalem.
After saying this, Jesus went on in front, going up to Jerusalem.
29 Lorsqu'il approcha de Bethphagé et de Béthanie, vers la montagne appelée Bois d'oliviers, il envoya deux de ses disciples,
It was when Jesus had almost reached Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, that he sent on two of the disciples.
30 en disant: «Allez à ce village qui est en face; en y entrant vous trouverez un ânon attaché, sur lequel jamais homme ne s'est assis: détachez-le, et amenez-le moi.
“Go to the village facing us,” he said, “and, when you get there, you will find a foal tethered, which no one has yet ridden; untie it and lead it here.
31 Si quelqu'un vous demande pourquoi vous le détachez, vous lui direz: «Parce que le Seigneur en a besoin.»
And, if anybody asks you ‘Why are you untying it?,’ you are to say this — ‘The Master wants it.’”
32 Ceux qui étaient envoyés partirent, et trouvèrent les choses comme Jésus le leur avait dit.
So the two who were sent went and found it as Jesus had told them.
33 Comme ils détachaient l'ânon, les maîtres de l'animal leur dirent: «Pourquoi détachez-vous cet ânon?»
While they were untying the foal, the owners asked them — “Why are you untying the foal?”
34 Ils dirent: «Le Seigneur en a besoin, »
And the two disciples answered — “The Master wants it.”
35 et ils l'amenèrent à Jésus. Puis ayant jeté leurs manteaux sur l'ânon, ils y firent monter Jésus.
Then they led it back to Jesus, and threw their cloaks on the foal and put Jesus upon it.
36 Pendant que Jésus cheminait, les gens étendaient leurs manteaux sur la route;
As he went along, the people kept spreading their cloaks in the road.
37 mais lorsqu'il approcha de Jérusalem, déjà à la descente de la montagne des Oliviers, toute la foule des disciples, transportée d'allégresse, se mit à louer Dieu à haute voix de tous les miracles qu'elle avait vus.
When he had almost reached the place where the road led down the Mount of Olives, every one of the many disciples began in their joy to praise God loudly for all the miracles that they had seen:
38 Elle disait: «Béni soit le roi qui vient au nom du Seigneur!» «Paix dans le ciel, et gloire dans les lieux très-hauts!»
“Blessed is He who comes — Our King — in the name of the Lord! Peace in Heaven, And glory on high.”
39 Quelques pharisiens mêlés à la foule, dirent à Jésus: «Maître, reprends tes disciples.»
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him: “Teacher, reprove your disciples.”
40 Il répondit: «Je vous dis que s'ils se taisent, les pierres crieront.»
But Jesus answered: “I tell you that if these men are silent, the very stones will call out.”
41 Quand il fut proche de Jérusalem, à la vue de cette ville, il pleura sur elle, et dit:
When he drew near, on seeing the city, he wept over it, and said:
42 «Ah! si tu connaissais, toi aussi, du moins en ce jour qui t'est donné, les choses qui appartiennent à ta paix! Hélas! elles sont cachées à tes yeux.
“Would that you had known, while yet there was time — even you — the things that make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your sight.
43 Des jours de malheur fondront sur toi: tes ennemis t'environneront de tranchées, ils t'investiront, ils te serreront de toutes parts,
For a time is coming upon you when your enemies will surround you with earthworks, and encircle you, and hem you in on all sides;
44 ils te détruiront, toi et tes enfants qui sont dans ton sein, et ils ne te laisseront pierre sur pierre, parce que tu n'as pas connu le temps où tu as été visitée.»
they will trample you down and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know ‘the time of your visitation.’”
45 Ensuite, étant entré dans le temple, il se mit à chasser les vendeurs, en leur disant:
Jesus went into the Temple Courts and began to drive out those who were selling,
46 «Il est écrit: «Ma maison sera une maison de prière, » mais vous, vous en avez fait «une caverne de voleurs.»
saying as he did so: “Scripture says — ‘My House shall be a House of Prayer’; but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”
47 Jésus passait toutes ses journées à enseigner dans le temple. Les principaux sacrificateurs, les scribes, ainsi que les grands cherchaient à le faire périr;
Jesus continued to teach each day in the Temple Courts; but the Chief Priests and Teachers of the Law were eager to take his life, and so also were the leading men.
48 mais ils ne savaient comment s'y prendre, car tout le peuple s'attachait à lui pour l'entendre.
Yet they could not see what to do, for the people all hung upon his words.
