Luc 12
1 Cependant les gens s'étant amassés par milliers, au point qu'ils s'écrasaient les uns les autres, Jésus se mit à dire à ses disciples: «Avant tout, gardez-vous du levain des pharisiens, qui est l'hypocrisie.
Meanwhile the people had gathered in thousands, so that they trod upon one another, when Jesus, addressing himself to his disciples, began by saying to them: “Be on your guard against the leaven — that is, the hypocrisy — of the Pharisees.
2 Il n'y a rien de caché qui ne se découvre, ni rien de secret qui ne finisse par être connu;
There is nothing, however covered up, which will not be uncovered, nor anything kept secret which will not become known.
3 aussi tout ce que vous aurez dit dans les ténèbres, sera redit en plein jour, et ce que vous aurez murmuré à l'oreille dans les chambres, sera publié sur les toits.
Hence all that you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have spoken in the ear, within closed doors, will be proclaimed upon the housetops.
4 Je vous dis à vous qui êtes mes amis: Ne craignez pas ceux qui tuent le corps, et qui, après cela, ne peuvent rien faire de plus.
To you who are my friends I say, Do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but after that can do no more.
5 Je vais vous dire qui vous devez craindre: Craignez celui qui, après avoir ôté la vie, a le pouvoir de jeter dans la Géhenne; oui, je vous le dis, c'est lui que vous devez craindre. (Geenna g1067)
I will show you of whom you should be afraid. Be afraid of him who, after killing you, has the power to fling you into the Pit. Yes, I say, be afraid of him. (Geenna g1067)
6 Ne vend-on pas cinq passereaux pour deux sous? et pourtant pas un seul n'est oublié de Dieu;
Are not five sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them has escaped God’s notice.
7 les cheveux mêmes de votre tête sont tous comptés. Ne craignez point; vous valez mieux que beaucoup de passereaux.
No, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.
8 Je vous le dis, quiconque me confessera devant les hommes, le Fils de l'homme aussi le confessera devant les anges de Dieu;
Every one, I tell you, who shall acknowledge me before his fellow men, the Son of Man, also, will acknowledge before God’s angels;
9 mais celui qui m'aura renié devant les hommes, sera renié devant les anges de Dieu.
but he, who disowns me before his fellow men, will be altogether disowned before God’s angels.
10 Et quiconque aura parlé contre le Fils de l'homme, en obtiendra le pardon; mais il n'y aura point de pardon pour celui qui aura blasphémé contre le Saint-Esprit.
Every one who shall say anything against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but for him who slanders the Holy Spirit there will be no forgiveness.
11 Quand on vous mènera dans les synagogues et devant les magistrats et les autorités, ne vous inquiétez pas de savoir comment vous vous défendrez, ni ce que vous répondrez ou direz,
Whenever they take you before the Synagogue Courts or the magistrates or other authorities, do not be anxious as to how you will defend yourselves, or what your defence will be, or what you will say;
12 car le Saint-Esprit vous enseignera à l'heure même ce qu'il faudra dire.»
for the Holy Spirit will show you at the moment what you ought to say.”
13 Quelqu'un de la foule lui dit: «Maître, dis à mon frère de partager avec moi notre héritage.»
“Teacher,” a man in the crowd said to Jesus, “tell my brother to share the property with me.”
14 Mais Jésus lui dit: «homme, qui m'a établi pour être votre juge, et pour faire vos partages?»
But Jesus said to him: “Man, who made me a judge or an arbiter between you?”
15 Il dit à la foule: «Gardez-vous avec soin de toute avarice, car un homme a beau être dans l'abondance, la vie ne dépend pas de ses biens.»
And then he added: “Take care to keep yourselves free from every form of covetousness; for even in the height of his prosperity a man’s true Life does not depend on what he has.”
16 Il leur ajouta cette comparaison: «Il y avait un homme riche dont les terres avaient beaucoup rapporté,
Then Jesus told them this parable — “There was once a rich man whose land was very fertile;
17 et il réfléchissait en lui-même, disant: «Que ferai-je? car je n'ai pas de place pour serrer ma récolte.»
and he began to ask himself ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?
18 Et il se dit: «Voici ce que je ferai: j'abattrai mes greniers, j'en bâtirai de plus grands, et j'y serrerai tous mes produits et tous mes biens;
This is what I will do,’ he said; ‘I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and store all my grain and my goods in them;
19 et je dirai à mon âme: «Mon âme, tu as de grands biens en réserve pour plusieurs années; repose-toi, mange, bois et jouis.»
and I will say to myself, Now you have plenty of good things put by for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.’
20 Mais Dieu lui dit: «Insensé, cette nuit même ton âme te sera redemandée; et ce que tu as mis en réserve, pour qui sera-t-il?»
But God said to the man ‘Fool! This very night your life is being demanded; and as for all you have prepared — who will have it?’
21 Il en est ainsi de l'homme qui thésaurise pour lui-même, et qui n'est pas riche pour Dieu.»
So it is with those who lay by wealth for themselves and are not rich to the glory of God.”
22 Et il dit à ses disciples: «C'est pourquoi je vous dis: Ne vous mettez point en souci, ni pour votre vie, de ce que vous mangerez; ni pour votre corps, de quoi vous vous vêtirez:
And Jesus said to his disciples: “That is why I say to you, Do not be anxious about the life here — what you can get to eat; nor yet about your body — what you can get to wear.
23 la vie est plus que la nourriture, et le corps plus que le vêtement.
For life is more than food, and the body than its clothes.
24 Considérez les corbeaux: ils ne sèment ni ne moissonnent, ils n'ont ni cellier ni grenier; et Dieu les nourrit. Combien ne valez-vous pas mieux que ces oiseaux!
Think of the ravens — they neither sow nor reap; they have neither storehouse nor barn; and yet God feeds them! And how much more precious are you than birds!
25 D'ailleurs, qui de vous peut, par ses soucis, ajouter une coudée à sa taille?
But which of you, by being anxious, can prolong his life a moment?
26 Si donc les moindres choses sont au-dessus de votre pouvoir, pourquoi vous mettez-vous en souci des autres?
And, if you cannot do even the smallest thing, why be anxious about other things?
27 Considérez que les lis ne filent ni ne tissent, cependant je vous dis que Salomon même, dans toute sa magnificence, n'était point vêtu comme l'un de ces lis.
Think of the lilies, and how they grow. They neither toil nor spin; yet, I tell you, even Solomon in all his splendour was not robed like one of these.
28 Si Dieu revêt de la sorte, dans les champs, l'herbe qui est aujourd'hui et qui demain sera jetée au four, combien plus vous revêtira-t-il, vous, ô gens de peu de foi.
If, even in the field, God so clothes the grass which is living to-day and to-morrow will be thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O men of little faith!
29 Vous aussi, ne cherchez point ce que vous mangerez et ce que vous boirez, et ne soyez point inquiets;
And you — do not be always seeking what you can get to eat or what you can get to drink; and do not waver.
30 car ce sont les nations du monde qui recherchent toutes ces choses: votre Père sait que vous en avez besoin.
These are the things for which all the nations of the world are seeking, and your Father knows that you need them.
31 Mais cherchez son royaume, et toutes ces choses vous seront données par-dessus.
No, seek his Kingdom, and these things shall be added for you.
32 «Ne craignez point, petit troupeau, car il a plu à votre Père de vous donner le royaume.
So do not be afraid, my little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the Kingdom.
33 Vendez vos biens et les donnez en aumônes. Faites-vous des bourses qui ne s'usent point, un trésor inépuisable, dans les cieux, là où le voleur ne pénètre pas, où la gerce ne gâte pas;
Sell what belongs to you, and give in charity. Make yourselves purses that will not wear out — an inexhaustible treasure in Heaven, where no thief comes near, or moth works ruin.
34 car là où est votre trésor, là aussi sera votre coeur.
For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.
35 «Que vos reins soient ceints, et vos lampes allumées.
Make yourselves ready, with your lamps alight;
36 Vous-mêmes, soyez semblables à des gens qui attendent le moment où leur maître doit revenir des noces, afin de lui ouvrir dès qu'il arrivera, et qu'il heurtera.
and be like men who are waiting for their Master’s return from his wedding, so that, when he comes and knocks, they may open the door for him at once.
37 Heureux les serviteurs que le maître, à son arrivée, trouvera veillant! En vérité, je vous dis qu'il se ceindra, qu'il les fera mettre à table, et viendra les servir.
Happy are those servants whom, on his return, the Master will find watching. I tell you that he will make himself ready, and bid them take their places at table, and will come and wait upon them.
38 Qu'il vienne à la seconde veille ou qu'il vienne à la troisième, s'il les trouve en cet état, heureux ces serviteurs-là!
Whether it is late at night, or in the early morning that he comes, if he finds all as it should be, then happy are they.
39 Soyez certains que si le maître de la maison savait à quel moment le voleur doit venir, il veillerait et ne laisserait pas forcer sa maison.
This you do know, that, had the owner of the house known at what time the thief was coming, he would have been on the watch, and would not have let his house be broken into.
40 Vous aussi, soyez prêts, parce que le Fils de l'homme viendra à l'heure que vous ne pensez pas.»
Do you also prepare, for when you are least expecting him the Son of Man will come.”
41 Pierre dit: «Seigneur, est-ce à nous que tu adresses cette comparaison, ou l'adresses-tu aussi à tout le monde?»
“Master,” said Peter, “are you telling this parable with reference to us or to every one?”
42 Le Seigneur dit: «Quel est donc l'économe fidèle et sensé que le maître placera à la tête de ses gens, pour donner à chacun sa portion au moment fixé?
“Who, then,” replied the Master, “is that trustworthy steward, the careful man, who will be placed by his master over his establishment, to give them their rations at the proper time?
43 Heureux le serviteur que son maître, à son arrivée, trouvera agissant de la sorte!
Happy will that servant be whom his master, when he comes home, shall find doing this.
44 En vérité, je vous dis qu'il lui donnera l'intendance de tous ses biens.
His master, I tell you, will put him in charge of the whole of his property.
45 Mais si ce serviteur dit en lui-même, «mon maître tarde à venir, » et qu'il se mette à battre les serviteurs et les servantes, à manger, à boire et à s'enivrer,
But should that servant say to himself ‘My master is a long time coming,’ and begin to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk,
46 son maître viendra au jour où il ne s'y attend pas, et à l'heure qu'il ne sait pas; il le coupera en deux, et lui assignera sa part avec les infidèles.
that servant’s master will come on a day when he does not expect him, and at an hour of which he is unaware, and will flog him severely and assign him his place among the untrustworthy.
47 Le serviteur qui aura connu la volonté de son maître, et qui n'aura pas préparé et fait toutes choses, selon sa volonté, recevra un grand nombre de coups;
The servant who knows his master’s wishes and yet does not prepare and act accordingly will receive many lashes;
48 tandis que celui qui ne l'aura pas connue et qui aura fait des choses dignes de châtiment, recevra peu de coups. On exigera beaucoup de celui à qui l'on aura beaucoup donné, et plus on aura confié à quelqu'un, plus on lui redemandera.
while one who does not know his master’s wishes, but acts so as to deserve a flogging, will receive but few. From every one to whom much has been given much will be expected, and from the man to whom much has been entrusted the more will be demanded.
49 «Je suis venu apporter le feu sur la terre, et que désiré-je, sinon qu'il soit déjà allumé.
I came to cast fire upon the earth; and what more can I wish, if it is already kindled?
50 D'autre part, il y a un baptême dont je dois être baptisé, et combien il me tarde qu'il soit accompli!
There is a baptism that I must undergo, and how great is my distress until it is over!
51 Croyez-vous que je sois venu mettre la paix sur la terre? — Non, vous dis-je, mais plutôt la division;
Do you think that I am here to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but to cause division.
52 car désormais, s'il y a cinq personnes dans une même maison, elles seront divisées, trois contre deux et deux contre trois:
For from this time, if there are five people in a house, they will be divided, three against two, and two against three.
53 on sera divisé, père contre fils et fils contre père, mère contre fille et fille contre mère, la belle-mère sera contre sa belle-fille et la belle-fille contre sa belle-mère.»
‘Father will be opposed to son and son to father, mother to daughter and daughter to mother, mother-in-law to her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law to her mother-in-law.’”
54 Jésus disait aussi à la foule: «Quand vous voyez la nuée s'élever du couchant, vous dites aussitôt: «Il va pleuvoir; » et cela arrive ainsi.
And to the people Jesus said: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once ‘There is a storm coming,’ and come it does.
55 Et quand vous voyez souffler le vent du midi, vous dites: «Il fera chaud; » et cela arrive.
And when you see that the wind is in the south, you say ‘It will be burning hot,’ and so it proves.
56 Hypocrites, vous savez bien juger de l'aspect de la terre et du ciel, comment ne jugez-vous pas du temps actuel?
Hypocrites! You know how to judge of the earth and the sky; how is it, then, that you cannot judge of this time?
57 Pourquoi ne discernez-vous pas de vous-mêmes ce qui est juste?
Why do not you yourselves decide what is right?
58 Lorsque tu te rends avec ta partie adverse devant le magistrat, mets tout en oeuvre pour te libérer d'avec elle en chemin, de peur qu'elle ne te traîne devant le juge, que le juge ne te livre au sergent, et que le sergent ne te jette en prison.
When, for instance, you are going with your opponent before a magistrate, on your way to the court do your best to be quit of him; for fear that he should drag you before the judge, then the judge will hand you over to the bailiff of the court, and the bailiff throw you into prison.
59 Je te le dis, tu n'en sortiras pas que tu n'aies payé jusqu’à la dernière pite.»
You will not, I tell you, come out until you have paid the very last farthing.”
