1 Timothée 6

1 Que tous ceux qui sont sous le joug de l'esclavage, tiennent leur maîtres pour dignes de tout respect, de peur qu'on ne blasphème le nom de Dieu et la doctrine.

Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine may not be blasphemed.

2 Que ceux qui ont des fidèles pour maîtres, ne les méprisent point sous prétexte que ce sont des frères; au contraire, qu'ils les servent d'autant mieux que ceux qui reçoivent leurs services sont des fidèles et des bien-aimés. Enseigne, ces choses et exhorte à les pratiquer.

And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.

3 Si quelqu'un enseigne de fausses doctrines, et n'adhère pas aux leçons morales de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, ni à la doctrine qui a pour objet la piété,

If any man teacheth otherwise, and agreeth not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the doctrine which is according to godliness;

4 c'est un orgueilleux qui ne sait rien: il a la maladie des discussions et des disputes, lesquelles n'engendrent qu'envie, querelles, propos injurieux, soupçons injustes,

He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, from which cometh envy, strife, railings, evil suspicions,

5 et des animosités sans fin avec des hommes viciés d'esprit et dévoyés, qui croient que la piété est un moyen de lucre.

Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing gain to be godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

6 Pourtant, c'est un grand gain que la piété jointe au contentement d'esprit,

But godliness with contentment is great gain.

7 car nous n'avons rien apporté dans ce monde, et il est clair que nous n'en pourrons rien emporter;

For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

8 si nous avons de quoi nous nourrir et nous couvrir, nous devons être contents.

And having food and raiment with these let us be content.

9 Ceux qui veulent être riches, tombent dans la tentation, dans le piège et dans une foule de désirs insensés et pernicieux, qui plongent les hommes dans la ruine et la perdition,

But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

10 car l'amour de l'argent est la racine de tous les maux. Quelques-uns en étant possédés, se sont détournés de la foi, et se sont créés bien des tourments.

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some have coveted, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

11 Pour toi, homme de Dieu, fuis ces désirs; recherche la justice, la piété, la foi, la charité, la patience, la douceur.

But thou, O man of God, flee from these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

12 Combats le bon combat de la foi; saisis la vie éternelle à laquelle tu as été appelé, et pour laquelle tu as fait ta belle profession en présence d'un grand nombre de témoins. (aiōnios g166)

Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. (aiōnios g166)

13 Je t'adjure devant Dieu qui donne à tout la vie, et devant Jésus-Christ, qui fit sa belle déclaration devant Ponce-Pilate,

I command thee in the sight of God, who maketh alive all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;

14 de garder le Commandement, en demeurant sans tache et sans reproche jusqu’à l'avènement de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ,

That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:

15 qui paraîtra au temps voulu par le Bienheureux et seul Puissant, par le Roi des rois et le Seigneur des seigneurs,

Who in his times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

16 qui seul possède l'immortalité, qui habite une lumière inaccessible, que nul homme n'a vu ni ne peut voir, à qui appartiennent l'honneur et la puissance éternelle. Amen! (aiōnios g166)

Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. (aiōnios g166)

17 Recommande aux riches de ce monde de ne se point enorgueillir et de ne point mettre leur espérance dans les richesses incertaines, mais de la placer en Dieu, qui nous fournit toutes choses en abondance, pour que nous sachions en jouir. (aiōn g165)

Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; (aiōn g165)

18 Recommande-leur de faire du bien, d'être riches en bonnes oeuvres, donnants, généreux,

That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to share;

19 de sorte qu'ils s'amassent pour l'avenir un trésor placé sur un fondement solide, afin de saisir la vie véritable.

Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

20 Timothée, conserve le dépôt qui t'a été confié, évitant les bavardages profanes et les controverses d'une science faussement ainsi nommée:

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

21 c'est pour en avoir fait profession que quelques-uns se sont éloignés de la foi. Que la grâce soit avec toi!

Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen. The first to Timothy was written from Laodicea, which is the chiefest city of Phrygia Pacatiana.
