Job 39

1 Sais-tu le temps auquel les chamois des rochers font leurs petits? As-tu observé quand les biches faonnent?

[Say] if you know the time of the bringing forth of the wild goats of the rock, and [if] you have marked the calving of the hinds:

2 Compteras-tu les mois qu'elles achèvent leur portée, et sauras-tu le temps auquel elles feront leurs petits,

and [if] you has have numbered the full months of their being with young, and [if] you have relieved their pangs:

3 Et qu'elles se courberont pour mettre bas leurs petits, [et] qu'elles se délivreront de leurs douleurs?

and have reared their young without fear; and will you loosen their pangs?

4 Leurs fans se portent bien, ils croissent dans les blés; ils s'écartent, et ne retournent plus vers elles.

Their young will break forth; they will be multiplied with offspring: [their young] will go forth, and will not return to them.

5 Qui est-ce qui a laissé aller libre l'âne sauvage, et qui a délié les liens de l'âne farouche,

And who is he that sent forth the wild ass free? and who loosed his bands?

6 Auquel j'ai donné la campagne pour maison, la terre inhabitée pour ses retraites?

whereas I made his habitation the wilderness, and the salt land his coverts.

7 Il se rit du bruit de la ville; il n'entend point les clameurs de l'exacteur;

He laughs to scorn the multitude of the city, and hears not the chiding of the tax-gatherer.

8 Les montagnes qu'il va épiant çà et là, sont ses pâturages, et il cherche toute sorte de verdure.

He will survey the mountains [as] his pasture, and he seeks after every green thing.

9 La licorne voudra-t-elle te servir, ou demeurera-t-elle à ta crèche?

And will the unicorn be willing to serve you, or to lie down at your manger?

10 Lieras-tu la licorne avec son licou pour labourer? ou rompra-t-elle les mottes des vallées après toi?

And will you bind his yoke with thongs, or will he plow furrows for you in the plain?

11 T'assureras-tu d'elle, sous ombre que sa force est grande, et lui abandonneras-tu ton travail?

And do you trust him, because his strength is great? and will you commit your works to him?

12 Te fieras-tu qu'elle te porte ta moisson, et qu'elle l'amasse dans ton aire?

And will you believe that he will return to you your seed, and bring [it] in [to] your threshing floor?

13 As-tu donné aux paons ce plumage qui est si brillant, ou à l'autruche les ailes et les plumes?

The peacock has a beautiful wing: if the stork and the ostrich conceive, [it is worthy of notice],

14 Néanmoins elle abandonne ses œufs à terre, et les fait échauffer sur la poussière,

for [the ostrich] will leave her eggs in the ground, and warm them on the dust,

15 Et elle oublie que le pied les écrasera, ou que les bêtes des champs les fouleront.

and has forgotten that the foot will scatter them, and the wild beasts of the field trample them.

16 Elle se montre cruelle envers ses petits, comme s'ils n'étaient pas à elle; et son travail est souvent inutile et elle ne s'en soucie point.

She has hardened [herself] against her young ones, as though [she bereaved] not herself: she labors in vain without fear.

17 Car Dieu l'a privée de sagesse, et ne lui a point donné d'intelligence;

For God has withholden wisdom from her, and not given her a portion in understanding.

18 A la première occasion elle se dresse en haut, et se moque du cheval et de celui qui le monte.

In her season she will lift herself on high; she will scorn the horse and his rider.

19 As-tu donné la force au cheval? [et] as-tu revêtu son cou d'un [hennissement] éclatant comme le tonnerre?

Hast you invested the horse with strength, and clothed his neck with terror?

20 Feras-tu bondir le cheval comme la sauterelle? le son magnifique de ses narines est effrayant.

And have you clad him in perfect armor, and made his breast glorious with courage?

21 Il creuse la terre [de son pied], il s'égaie en sa force, il va à la rencontre d'un homme armé;

He paws exulting in the plain, and goes forth in strength into the plain.

22 Il se rit de la frayeur, il ne s'épouvante de rien, et il ne se détourne point de devant l'épée.

He laughs to scorn a king as he meets him, and will by no means turn back from the sword.

23 [Il n'a point peur des] flèches qui sifflent tout autour de lui, ni du fer luisant de la hallebarde et du javelot.

The bow and sword resound against him; and [his] rage will swallow up the ground:

24 Il creuse la terre, plein d'émotion et d'ardeur au son de la trompette, et il ne peut se retenir.

and he will not believe until the trumpet sounds.

25 Au son bruyant de la trompette, il dit: Ha! ha! Il flaire de loin la bataille, le tonnerre des Capitaines, et le cri de triomphe.

And when the trumpet sounds, he says, Aha! and afar off he smells the war with prancing and neighing.

26 Est-ce par ta sagesse que l'épervier se remplume, et qu'il étend ses ailes vers le Midi?

And does the hawk remain steady by your wisdom, having spread out her wings unmoved, looking toward the region of the south?

27 Sera-ce à ton commandement que l'aigle prendra l'essor, et qu'elle élèvera sa nichée en haut?

And does the eagle rise at your command, and the vulture remain sitting over his nest,

28 Elle habite sur les rochers, et elle s'y tient; [même] sur les sommets des rochers et dans des lieux forts.

on a crag of a rock, and in a secret [place]?

29 De là elle découvre le gibier, ses yeux voient de loin.

Thence he seeks food, his eyes observe from far.

30 Ses petits aussi sucent le sang, et où il y a des corps morts, elle y est aussitôt.

And his young ones roll themselves in blood, and wherever the carcasses may be, immediately they are found.
