Esdras 5

1 Alors Aggée le Prophète, et Zacharie, fils de Hiddo le Prophète, prophétisaient aux Juifs qui étaient en Juda et à Jérusalem, au Nom du Dieu d'Israël, [qui les avait envoyés] vers eux.

Now the prophets Haggai and Zechariah, the son of Iddo, were preaching to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel.

2 Et Zorobabel fils de Salathiel, et Jésuah fils de Jotsadak, se levèrent et commencèrent à rebâtir la maison de Dieu, qui habite à Jérusalem; et ils avaient avec eux les Prophètes de Dieu, qui les aidaient.

Then Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, got up and made a start at building the house of God at Jerusalem: and the prophets of God were with them, helping them.

3 En ce temps-là Tattenaï, Gouverneur de deçà le fleuve, et Sétharboznaï, et leurs compagnons vinrent à eux et leur parlèrent ainsi: Qui vous a donné ordre de rebâtir cette maison, et de fonder ces murailles?

At the same time, Tattenai, ruler of the land across the river, and Shethar-bozenai, and their men, came to them and said, Who gave you orders to go on building this house and this wall?

4 Et ils leur parlèrent aussi en cette manière: Quels sont les noms des hommes qui bâtissent cet édifice?

Then they said these words to them: What are the names of the men who are at work on this building?

5 Mais parce que sur les Anciens des Juifs était l'œil de leur Dieu, on ne les fit point cesser, jusqu'à ce que l'affaire parvint à Darius, et qu'alors ils rapportassent des Lettres sur cela.

But the eye of their God was on the chiefs of the Jews, and they did not make them give up working till the question had been put before Darius and an answer had come by letter about it.

6 La teneur des Lettres que Tattenaï Gouverneur de deçà le fleuve, et Sétharboznaï, et ses compagnons Apharsékiens, qui étaient de deçà le fleuve, envoyèrent au Roi Darius.

This is a copy of the letter which Tattenai, the ruler of the land across the river, and Shethar-bozenai and his friends the Apharsachites, living across the river, sent to Darius the king:

7 Ils lui envoyèrent une relation du fait, et il y avait ainsi écrit: Toute paix soit au Roi Darius.

They sent him a letter saying, To Darius the king, all peace:

8 Que le Roi soit averti que nous sommes allés en la province de Judée, vers la maison du grand Dieu, laquelle on bâtit de grosses pierres, et même la charpenterie est posée aux parois, et cet édifice se bâtit en diligence, et s'avance entre leurs mains.

This is to give the king word that we went into the land of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is made of great stones, and has its walls supported with wood, and the work is going on with industry, and they are doing it well.

9 Et nous avons interrogé les Anciens qui étaient là, et nous leur avons parlé ainsi: Qui vous a donné ordre de rebâtir cette maison, et de fonder ces murailles?

Then we said to the men responsible, who gave you authority for the building of this house and these walls?

10 Et nous leur avons aussi demandé leurs noms, pour les faire savoir au Roi, afin que nous écrivissions les noms des principaux d'entr'eux.

And we made request for their names, so that we might send you word, and give you the names of the men at the head of them.

11 Et ils nous ont répondu de cette manière, disant: Nous sommes les serviteurs du Dieu des cieux et de la terre, et nous rebâtissons la maison qui avait été bâtie ci-devant il y a longtemps, laquelle un grand Roi d'Israël avait bâtie et fondée.

And they made answer to us, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are building the house which was put up in times long past and was designed and made complete by a great king of Israel.

12 Mais après que nos pères eurent provoqué à la colère le Dieu des cieux, il les livra entre les mains de Nébucadnetsar Roi de Babylone, Caldéen, qui détruisit cette maison, et qui transporta le peuple à Babylone.

But when the God of heaven was moved to wrath by our fathers, he gave them up into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, the Chaldaean, who sent destruction on this house and took the people away into Babylon.

13 Mais en la première année de Cyrus, Roi de Babylone, le Roi Cyrus commanda qu'on rebâtît cette maison de Dieu.

But in the first year of Cyrus, king of Babylon, Cyrus the king gave an order for the building of this house of God;

14 Et même le Roi Cyrus tira hors du Temple de Babylone les vaisseaux d'or et d'argent de la maison de Dieu, que Nébucadnetsar avait emportés du Temple qui était à Jérusalem, et qu'il avait apportés au Temple de Babylone, et ils furent délivrés à un nommé Sesbatsar, lequel il avait établi Gouverneur.

And the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took from the Temple which was in Jerusalem, and put into the house of his god in Babylon, these Cyrus the king took from the house of his god in Babylon, and gave to one named Sheshbazzar, whom he had made ruler;

15 Et il lui dit: Prends ces ustensiles, et t'en va, et fais-les porter au Temple qui était à Jérusalem; et que la maison de Dieu soit rebâtie en sa place.

And he said to him, Go, take these vessels, and put them in the Temple in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be put up again in its place.

16 Alors ce Sesbatsar vint, et posa les fondements de la maison de Dieu, qui [habite] à Jérusalem; et depuis ce temps-là jusqu'à présent, on la bâtit, et elle n'est point encore achevée.

Then this same Sheshbazzar came and put the house of God in Jerusalem on its bases: and from that time till now the building has been going on, but it is still not complete.

17 Maintenant donc, s'il semble bon au Roi, qu'on cherche dans la maison des trésors du Roi laquelle est à Babylone, s'il est vrai qu'il y ait eu un ordre donné par Cyrus de rebâtir cette maison de Dieu à Jérusalem; et que le Roi nous fasse savoir sa volonté sur cela.

So now, if it seems good to the king, let search be made in the king's store-house at Babylon, to see if it is true that an order was given by Cyrus the king for the building of this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send us word of his pleasure in connection with this business.
