Esther 8

1 Ce même jour-là le Roi Assuérus donna à la Reine Esther la maison d'Haman l'oppresseur des Juifs. Et Mardochée se présenta devant le Roi; car Esther avait déclaré ce qu'il lui était.

On that day, did King Ahasuerus give unto Esther the queen, the house of Haman, the adversary of the Jews, —and, Mordecai, came in before the king, for Esther had told, what he was to her.

2 Et le Roi prit son anneau qu'il avait fait ôter à Haman, et le donna à Mardochée; et Esther établit Mardochée sur la maison d'Haman.

And the king took off his signet-ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai, —and Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

3 Et Esther continua de parler en la présence du Roi, et se jetant à ses pieds elle pleura, et elle le supplia de faire que la malice d'Haman Agagien, et ce qu'il avait machiné contre les Juifs, n'eût point d'effet.

Yet again, spake Esther before the king, and fell down at his feet, —and wept and made supplication unto him, to cause the mischief of Haman the Agagite to pass away, even the plot which he had plotted against the Jews.

4 Et le Roi tendit le sceptre d'or à Esther. Alors Esther se leva, et se tint debout devant le Roi.

And the king held out unto Esther, the golden sceptre, —so Esther arose, and stood before the king;

5 Et elle dit: Si le Roi le trouve bon, et si j'ai trouvé grâce devant lui, et si la chose semble raisonnable au Roi, et si je lui suis agréable, qu'on écrive pour révoquer les Lettres qui regardaient la machination d'Haman fils d'Hammédatha Agagien, qu'il avait écrites pour détruire les Juifs qui sont dans toutes les provinces du Roi.

and said—If, unto the king, it seem good, and if I have found favour before him, and the thing be approved before the king, and, I myself, be pleasing in his eyes, let it be written, to reverse the letters plotted by Haman, son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy thee Jews, who are in all the provinces of the king.

6 Car comment pourrais-je voir le mal qui arriverait à mon peuple, et comment pourrais-je voir la destruction de ma parenté?

For how can I endure to see the ruin that shall overtake my people? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?

7 Et le Roi Assuérus dit à la Reine Esther et à Mardochée Juif: Voilà, j'ai donné la maison d'Haman à Esther, et on l'a pendu au gibet, parce qu'il avait étendu sa main sur les Juifs.

Then said King Ahasuerus unto Esther the queen, and unto Mordecai the Jew, —Lo! the house of Haman, have I given unto Esther, and, him, have they hanged upon the gallows, because he thrust forth his hand against the Jews.

8 Vous donc écrivez au nom du Roi en faveur des Juifs, comme il vous plaira, et cachetez l'écrit de l'anneau du Roi; car l'écriture, qui est écrite au nom du Roi, et cachetée de l'anneau du Roi, ne se révoque point.

Ye, therefore, write concerning the Jews as may seem good in your own eyes, in the name of the king, and seal it with the kings signet-ring, —for a writing which hath been written in the king’s name, and sealed with the king’s signet-ring, none can reverse.

9 Et en ce même temps, le vingt-troisième jour du troisième mois qui est le mois de Sivan, les Secrétaires du Roi furent appelés, et on écrivit aux Juifs, comme Mardochée le commanda; et aux Satrapes, et aux Gouverneurs, et aux principaux des provinces, qui étaient depuis les Indes jusqu'en Ethiopie, [savoir] cent vingt-sept provinces, à chaque province selon sa façon d'écrire, et à chaque peuple selon sa Langue, et aux Juifs selon leur façon d'écrire, et selon leur Langue.

Then were called the king’s scribes at that time—in the third month, the same, is the month Siwan, on the twenty-third thereof, and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded unto the Jews, and unto the satraps and pashas and rulers of the provinces, which are from India even unto Ethiopia, a hundred and twenty-seven provinces, every province according to the writing thereof, and every people according to their tongue, —and unto the Jews, according to their writing, and according to their tongue;

10 On écrivit donc des Lettres au nom du Roi Assuérus, et on les cacheta de l'anneau du Roi; puis on les envoya par des courriers, montés sur des chevaux, des dromadaires et des mulets;

and he wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus, and sealed it with the king’s signet-ring, —and sent letters by the hand of runners on horses, riding the swift steeds used in the kings service, bred of the stud:

11 [Savoir] que le Roi avait octroyé aux Juifs qui étaient dans chaque ville de s'assembler, et de se mettre en défense pour leur vie, afin d'exterminer, de tuer, et de détruire toute assemblée de gens, de quelque peuple et de quelque province que ce soit, qui se trouveraient en armes pour opprimer les Juifs, [de les exterminer] eux et leurs petits enfants, et leurs femmes, et de piller leurs dépouilles.

That the king had granted unto the Jews who were in every city, to gather themselves together, and to stand for their life, to destroy, to slay and to cause to perish—all the force of the people and province who should distress them, their little ones and women, —and [to take] the spoil of them as a prey:

12 Dans un même jour dans toutes les provinces du Roi Assuérus; [savoir], le treizième [jour] du douzième mois, qui est le mois d'Adar.

upon one day, throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, —upon the thirteenth of the twelfth month, the same, is the month Adar:

13 Les patentes qui furent écrites portaient, que cette ordonnance serait publiée dans chaque province, et proposée publiquement à tous les peuples, afin que les Juifs fussent prêts en ce jour-là pour se venger de leurs ennemis.

A copy of the writing to be given, as an edict, throughout every province, was published to all the peoples, —and that the Jews be ready against that day, to avenge themselves on their enemies.

14 [Ainsi] les courriers, montés sur des chevaux [et] des mulets, partirent, se dépêchant et se hâtant pour la parole du Roi; l'ordonnance fut aussi publiée dans Susan, la ville capitale.

The runners that rode on the swift steeds used in the king’s service, went forth, being urged forward and pressed on, by the word of the king, —and, the edict, was given in Shusan the palace.

15 Et Mardochée sortait de devant le Roi en vêtement Royal de couleur de pourpre et de blanc, avec une grande couronne d'or, et une robe de fin lin, et d'écarlate; et la ville de Susan jetait des cris de réjouissance, et elle fut dans la joie.

And, Mordecai, went forth from the presence of the king, in royal apparel, of blue and white, with a large diadem of gold, and a mantle of fine linen and purple, —and, the city Shusan, was bright and joyful.

16 Et il y eut pour les Juifs de la prospérité, de la joie, de la réjouissance, et de l'honneur.

To the Jews, had come light, and joy, —and gladness and honour.

17 Et dans chaque province, et dans chaque ville, dans les lieux où la parole du Roi et son ordonnance était parvenue, il y eut de l'allégresse, et de la joie pour les Juifs, des festins, et des jours de fête; et même plusieurs d'entre les peuples des pays se faisaient Juifs, parce que la frayeur des Juifs les avait saisis.

And, in every province, and in every city, whithersoever the word of the king and his edict did reach, joy and gladness, had the Jews, —a banquet and a happy day, —and, many from among the peoples of the land, were becoming Jews, for the dread of the Jews had fallen upon them.
