Proverbes 23
1 Si tu t'assieds pour dîner à la table d'un prince, fais bien attention à ce qui te sera présenté
When thou sittest to eate with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee,
2 puis étends la main, sachant qu'il convient qu'on te serve de tels mets; toutefois, même si tu as grand appétit,
And put the knife to thy throte, if thou be a man giuen to the appetite.
3 ne convoite point leur repas; car c'est là une vie factice.
Be not desirous of his deintie meates: for it is a deceiuable meate.
4 Si tu es pauvre, n'aspire pas à la richesse; repousse-la même en pensée.
Trauaile not too much to be rich: but cease from thy wisdome.
5 Si tu fixes ton regard sur elle, tu la vois disparaître; car elle a, comme l'aigle, des ailes prêtes à s'envoler, et retourne à la maison de son premier maître.
Wilt thou cast thine eyes vpon it, which is nothing? for riches taketh her to her wings, as an eagle, and flyeth into the heauen.
6 Ne dîne pas avec un homme envieux; ne désire rien de sa table;
Eate thou not the bread of him that hath an euil eye, neither desire his deintie meates.
7 car il mange et il boit comme on avalerait un cheveu. Ne l'introduis pas chez toi, et ne mange pas un morceau avec lui;
For as though he thought it in his heart, so will hee say vnto thee, Eate and drinke: but his heart is not with thee.
8 car il le vomirait et souillerait tes meilleures paroles.
Thou shalt vomit thy morsels that thou hast eaten, and thou shalt lose thy sweete wordes.
9 Ne dis rien à l'insensé, de peur que peut-être il ne tourne en dérision tes sages discours.
Speake not in the eares of a foole: for hee will despise the wisdome of thy wordes.
10 Ne dépasse pas les bornes anciennes, et n'entre pas dans le champ de l'orphelin;
Remooue not the ancient boundes, and enter not into the fieldes of the fatherlesse.
11 car il est fort celui que le Seigneur rachète; et, si tu es en procès avec lui, Dieu plaidera sa cause.
For he that redeemeth them, is mightie: he will defend their cause against thee.
12 Livre ton cœur à la discipline, et prépare ton oreille aux paroles de la doctrine.
Apply thine heart to instruction, and thine eares to the wordes of knowledge.
13 Ne cesse de corriger un enfant; car si tu le frappes de verges, il n'en mourra pas.
Withhold not correction from the childe: if thou smite him with the rodde, he shall not die.
Thou shalt smite him with the rodde, and shalt deliuer his soule from hell. (Sheol h7585)
15 Mon fils, si ton cœur est sage, tu réjouiras aussi mon cœur;
My sonne, if thine heart be wise, mine heart shall reioyce, and I also.
16 et si tes lèvres sont droites, elles converseront avec mes lèvres.
And my reynes shall reioyce, when thy lips speake righteous things.
17 Que ton cœur ne porte point envie aux pécheurs; mais sois toujours dans la crainte de Dieu.
Let not thine heart bee enuious against sinners: but let it bee in the feare of the Lord continually.
18 Car si tu observes ces choses, tu auras des descendants, et ton espérance ne sera pas trompée.
For surely there is an ende, and thy hope shall not be cut off.
19 Écoute, mon fils, et sois sage; et maintiens droites les pensées de ton cœur.
O thou my sonne, heare, and bee wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
20 Ne sois pas buveur de vin; évite les longs banquets et la profusion des viandes.
Keepe not company with drunkards, nor with gluttons.
21 Car l'ivrogne et le débauché mendieront; le paresseux sera revêtu de haillons en lambeaux.
For the drunkard and the glutton shall bee poore, and the sleeper shalbe clothed with ragges.
22 Écoute, mon fils, le père qui t'a engendré, et ne méprise pas ta mère parce qu'elle a vieilli.
Obey thy father that hath begotten thee, and despise not thy mother when she is olde.
Bye the trueth, but sell it not: likewise wisdome, and instruction, and vnderstanding.
24 Un père juste élève bien ses enfants, et la sagesse d'un fils réjouit son âme.
The father of the righteous shall greatly reioyce, and hee that begetteth a wise childe, shall haue ioy of him.
25 Que ton père et ta mère se réjouissent en toi, et que celle qui t'a enfanté soit heureuse.
Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall reioyce.
26 Mon fils, donne-moi ton cœur; que tes yeux gardent mes voies.
My sonne, giue mee thine heart, and let thine eyes delite in my wayes.
27 La maison étrangère est comme un tonneau percé; il est étroit le puits de l'étranger.
For a whore is as a deepe ditche, and a strange woman is as a narrowe pitte.
28 Celui qui les recherche périra bientôt, et tout pécheur sera détruit.
Also she lyeth in wait as for a praye, and she increaseth the transgressers among men.
29 Pour qui les gémissements? Pour qui le trouble? Pour qui les contestations? Pour qui les ennuis et les entretiens frivoles? Pour qui les repentirs inutiles? Pour qui les yeux livides?
To whome is woe? to whome is sorowe? to whom is strife? to whom is murmuring? to whom are woundes without cause? and to whome is the rednesse of the eyes?
30 N'est-ce pas pour ceux qui passent leur temps dans l'ivresse et qui hantent les lieux où l'on boit?
Euen to them that tarie long at the wine, to them that goe, and seeke mixt wine.
31 Ne vous enivrez pas; mais faites votre société des hommes justes, et fréquentez-les publiquement. Car si vos yeux s'arrêtent sur les fioles et les coupes, plus tard vous marcherez plus nu qu'un pilon à mortier.
Looke not thou vpon the wine, when it is red, and when it sheweth his colour in the cup, or goeth downe pleasantly.
32 L'homme ivre finit par s'étendre comme si un serpent l'avait mordu; le venin se répand sur lui comme de la dent d'un reptile.
In the ende thereof it will bite like a serpent, and hurt like a cockatrise.
33 Si tes yeux regardent une femme étrangère, la langue aussitôt divaguera,
Thine eyes shall looke vpon strange women, and thine heart shall speake lewde things.
34 et tu seras gisant comme au sein de la mer, et comme un pilote au milieu de l'orage.
And thou shalt bee as one that sleepeth in the middes of the sea, and as hee that sleepeth in the toppe of the maste.
35 Et tu diras: On m'a frappé, et je n'en ai pas souffert; on s'est joué de moi, et je ne m'en suis pas douté; quand viendra l'aurore, pour m'en aller encore chercher des hommes avec qui je puisse me retrouver?
They haue stricken mee, shalt thou say, but I was not sicke: they haue beaten mee, but I knew not, when I awoke: therefore will I seeke it yet still.
