Deutéronome 21

1 Si, en la terre que le Seigneur te donne pour héritage, on trouve le cadavre d'un homme frappé à mort dans les champs, et si l'on ignore qui a porté le coup,

When there shall be found one slain on the soil which Yahweh thy God is giving unto thee to possess, lying prostrate in the field, —it not being known who smote him,

2 Tes anciens et tes juges sortiront et mesureront à quelle distance sont les villes au milieu desquelles on aura trouvé le corps.

then shall thine elders and thy judges go forth, —and measure unto the cities that are round about the slain;

3 On verra quelle est la ville la plus proche du cadavre; alors, les anciens de cette ville prendront, parmi les bœufs, une génisse, non encore soumise au joug;

and it shall be that the city that is nearest unto the slain, the elders of that city shall take a heifer of the herd which hath not been wrought with, which hath not drawn in a yoke;

4 Puis, ils feront descendre la génisse en un ravin inculte, et, dans ce ravin, ils trancheront les muscles du cou de la génisse,

and the elders of that city shall take down the heifer into a ravine with an everflowing stream, which is neither tilled nor sown, —and shall behead there the heifer in the ravine.

5 Ensuite, viendront les prêtres et les lévites choisis par le Seigneur Dieu pour se tenir auprès de lui et pour bénir en son nom, car c'est à eux qu'il appartient de condamner et d'absoudre.

Then shall the priests the sons of Levi come near, for of them, hath Yahweh thy God made choice to wait upon him, and to bless in the name of Yahweh, —and at their bidding, shall be settled every controversy and every punishment;

6 Tous les anciens de la ville la plus proche du cadavre se laveront les mains sur la tête de la génisse immolée dans le ravin.

and, all the elders of that city who are nearest unto the slain, shall bathe their hands over the heifer that hath been beheaded in the ravine,

7 Puis, ils diront: Nos mains n'ont pas versé ce sang, et nos yeux n'ont rien vu.

and shall respond, and say, —Our hands, shed not this blood, neither did, our eyes, see [the deed].

8 Seigneur, soyez propice au peuple d'Israël que vous avez délivré; faites que le sang innocent ne tombe pas sur le peuple d'Israël; et pour eux le cri du sang innocent sera apaisé

Be propitious unto thy people Israel whom thou hast redeemed, O Yahweh, and do not impute innocent blood in the midst of thy people Israel. So shall they obtain propitiation for the guilt of shedding blood.

9 Et tu auras effacé du milieu du peuple la tache du sang innocent, si tu as fait ce qui est bon et agréable devant le Seigneur.

Thou, therefore shalt consume the guilt of shedding innocent blood out of thy midst, —when thou shalt do that which is right in the eyes of Yahweh.

10 Si tu vas en guerre contre des ennemis, si le Seigneur te les ayant livrés, tu t'empares de leurs richesses,

When thou shalt go forth to war against thine enemies, —and Yahweh thy God shall deliver them into thy hand and thou shalt take them captive;

11 Et si tu vois parmi le butin une femme qui soit belle; si tu la désires et si tu la prends pour femme,

and shalt see among the captives a woman of beautiful figure, —and shalt have a desire unto her, and wouldest take her to thee to wife,

12 Tu la conduiras en ta demeure, tu lui raseras la tête, tu lui couperas les ongles,

then shalt thou bring her into the midst of thy house, —and she shall shave her head and pare her nails;

13 Tu lui ôteras les vêtements de la captivité; elle restera en ta maison pendant un mois, elle pleurera son père et sa mère; après cela tu t'approcheras d'elle, tu auras commerce avec elle; elle sera ta femme.

and put away the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thy house, and bewail her father and her mother for the space of a month, —and after that, mayest thou go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife.

14 Et si tu ne la veux plus, tu la renverras libre, parce que tu l'auras humiliée, et tu ne la vendras pas à prix d'argent, et tu ne la mépriseras point.

And it shall be, if thou hast no pleasure in her, then shalt thou let her go whither she will but thou shalt not sell, her for silver, —thou shalt not make merchandise of her, because thou hast humbled her.

15 Si un homme a deux femmes, l'une bien-aimée, l'autre haïe, et qu'elles enfantent, la détestée comme la bien-aimée, et que le fils premier-né soit de la femme haïe;

When a man shall have two wives—the one beloved and, the other hated, and they have borne him sons, both she that is beloved, and she that is hated, —and it shall be that the firstborn son belongeth to her that is hated,

16 Le jour où l'homme fera le partage de ses biens, il ne pourra transmettre le droit d'aînesse au fils de la bien-aimée, au mépris du fils premier-né, provenant de la femme haïe.

then shall it be, that in the day when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, he may not treat the son of the beloved, instead of the son of the hated, as the firstborn;

17 Il reconnaîtra celui-ci comme son premier-né, et lui donnera double part dans tous ses biens, parce qu'il est l'aîné des enfants et que cette double part appartient au droit d'aînesse.

but the true firstborn the son of her that is hated, shall he treat as firstborn by giving him double out of all that is found to be his, —for, he, is the beginning of his strength, his, is the right of the firstborn.

18 Si un homme a un fils indocile, querelleur, sourd à la voix de son père et de sa mère; s'ils le réprimandent sans qu'il les écoute,

When a man hath a son, rebellious and insulting, who will not hearken to the voice of his father, and to the voice of his mother, —though they chastise him, yet will not hearken unto them,

19 Son père et sa mère, l'ayant pris avec eux, le conduiront auprès des anciens devant la porte de la ville,

then shall his father and his mother, lay hold of him, —and bring him forth unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place;

20 Et ils diront aux hommes de leur ville: Notre fils que voici est désobéissant et querelleur; sourd à notre voix, il court les festins et s'enivre;

and shall say unto the elders of his city: This our son, is rebellious and insulting, —he will not hearken unto our voice, —a glutton and a tippler.

21 Alors, les hommes de la ville le lapideront; il mourra et vous aurez déraciné parmi tous le mal, et les autres enfants indociles l'apprenant auront crainte.

Then shall all the men of his city stone him with stones that he die, so shalt thou consume the wicked thing out of thy midst, —and, all Israel, shall hear and fear.

22 Si un homme coupable d'un crime capital est mis à mort, et que vous l'ayez pendu à une potence,

But when there shall be in any man a sin worthy of death and he is to be put to death, —and thou shalt hang him on a tree,

23 Que son corps n'y passe point la nuit; enterrez-le le même jour dans une fosse, car tout homme pendu a une potence est maudit de Dieu; ne souillez donc pas la terre que Dieu vous donne en héritage.

his dead body shall not remain all night upon the tree but thou shalt bury, him on the same day, for a reproach unto God, is he that is hanged, —so shalt thou not make unclean thy soil which Yahweh thy God is giving unto thee for an inheritance.
