Habacuc 1
1 L’Oracle que le prophète Habacuc perçut dans une vision:
The prophecy which Habakkuk the prophet foresaw.
2 "Jusques à quand, ô Seigneur, t’implorerai-je sans que tu entendes mon appel? Crierai-je vers toi: violence! sans que tu prêtes secours?
How long, O Lord, have I entreated [thee], and thou wouldst not hear? [how long] shall I cry out unto thee [because of] violence, and thou wilt not save?
3 Pourquoi me laisses-tu voir l’iniquité et restes-tu témoin de l’injustice? L’Oppression et la violence triomphent sous mes yeux; partout éclatent des disputes et sévit la discorde!
Why wilt thou let me see wickedness, and wilt look on trouble, and the robbery and violence [that are] before me: while there is strife, and contention lifteth up [its head]?
4 Aussi la loi est-elle paralysée et le droit ne se manifeste-t-il plus jamais. Oui, le méchant circonvient le juste, aussi ne rend-on que des sentences perverses.
Therefore is the law powerless, and justice cometh not forth victorious; for the wicked encompasseth about the righteous; therefore doth justice come forth perverted.
5 Jetez les yeux sur les peuples, regardez, soyez étonnés, stupéfaits! Car il va, en votre temps, accomplir une œuvre… Vous n’y croiriez pas si on vous la racontait.
Look ye about among the nations, and behold and be astonished and astounded; for [God] will fulfill a work in your days, ye would not believe it, if it were only told you.
6 Oui, je vais susciter les Chaldéens, ce peuple féroce et emporté, qui parcourt les vastes espaces de la terre, pour conquérir des demeures qui ne sont pas à lui:
For, lo, I will raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and impetuous nation, that march to the wide spaces of the earth to conquer dwelling-places that are not theirs.
7 Peuple terrible et redoutable! De lui seul il tire son droit et son orgueil.
Terrible and dreadful are they: from themselves go forth their judicial laws and their dignity.
8 Ses chevaux sont plus légers que des panthères, plus rapides que les loups du soir, et ses cavaliers se répandent de toutes parts. Ils viennent de loin, ses cavaliers, ils volent comme un aigle qui se hâte de dévorer.
And swifter than leopards are their horses, and fiercer than the evening wolves; and their horsemen spread themselves abroad: and their horsemen will come from afar; they will fly like the eagle hastening to eat.
9 Tous viennent pour la rapine, leur passion les porte toujours en avant. Ils amassent des captifs comme du sable.
They all will come for violence: the front of their faces is like the east wind, and they gather captives as the sand.
10 Et ce peuple se moque des rois, les princes lui sont un objet de risée; il se joue de toutes les forteresses, amoncelle un peu de terre et les prend d’assaut.
And they will make sport with kings, and princes will be a play unto them: at every strong-hold will they laugh, and they will cast up earth-mounds and capture it.
11 Ainsi il passe comme une tempête, et sur son passage il commet des méfaits, lui qui tient sa force pour son dieu!
Then doth their spirit become arrogant, and they are surpassingly proud, and offend, [imputing] this their power unto their god.
12 N’Es-tu pas, de toute éternité, ô Seigneur, mon Dieu, mon Saint? Non, nous ne mourrons pas! Eternel, c’est pour faire justice que tu as commis ce peuple! O mon Rocher, c’est pour châtier que tu l’as établi!
Art thou not from everlasting, O Lord my God, my Holy One? we shall not die. O Lord, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O Protector, thou hast appointed them to correct [nations].
13 O toi qui as les yeux trop purs pour voir le mal, et qui ne peux regarder l’iniquité, pourquoi regardes-tu ces perfides, gardes-tu le silence quand le méchant dévore plus juste que lui?
Thou, who art too pure of eyes to behold evil, and canst not look on trouble, wherefore wilt thou look upon those that deal treacherously, be silent when the wicked swalloweth up him that is more righteous than he?
14 Pourquoi as-tu rendu les hommes pareils aux poissons de la mer, aux reptiles qui n’ont point de maître?
And [why] makest thou men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them?
15 Il les prend tous avec l’hameçon, il les tire à lui avec son filet et les jette ensemble dans sa nasse; aussi est-il content et joyeux.
All of them he bringeth up with the angle, he draggeth them up in his net, and gathereth them in his drag: therefore he rejoiceth and is glad.
16 Aussi offre-t-il des sacrifices à son filet et brûle-t-il de l’encens à sa nasse, car il leur doit une prise abondante et d’exquises victuailles.
Therefore he sacrificeth unto his net, and burneth incense unto his drag; because through them is his portion fat, and his food marrowy.
17 Est-ce une raison pour qu’il vide toujours son filet et recommence sans cesse à égorger des peuples, sans pitié?
Shall he therefore [always] empty his net, and continually slay nations without sparing?
