Matthieu 18

1 En ce moment-là, les disciples s'approchèrent de Jésus et lui dirent: " Qui donc est le plus grand dans le royaume des cieux? "

In that hour the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"

2 Jésus, faisant venir un petit enfant, le plaça au milieu d'eux

He called a little child to himself, and set him in the midst of them,

3 et leur dit: " Je vous le dis, en vérité, si vous ne vous changez de façon à devenir comme les petits enfants, vous n'entrerez point dans le royaume des cieux.

and said, "Truly I tell you, unless you turn, and become as little children, you will in no way enter into the kingdom of heaven.

4 Celui donc qui se fera humble comme ce petit enfant, est le plus grand dans le royaume des cieux.

Whoever therefore humbles himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

5 Et celui qui reçoit en mon nom un petit enfant comme celui-ci, c'est moi qu'il reçoit.

Whoever receives one such little child in my name receives me,

6 Mais celui qui scandalisera un de ces petits qui croient en moi, il vaudrait mieux pour lui qu'on lui attachât au cou la meule qu'un âne tourne, et qu'on le précipitât au fond de la mer.

but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him that a huge millstone should be hung around his neck, and that he should be sunk in the depths of the sea.

7 " Malheur au monde à cause des scandales! Il est nécessaire qu'il arrive des scandales; mais malheur à l'homme par qui le scandale arrive!

"Woe to the world because of stumbling blocks. For there will always be something to cause people to stumble, but woe to the person through whom the stumbling block comes.

8 Si ta main ou ton pied est pour toi une occasion de chute, coupe-les et jette-les loin de toi: il vaut mieux pour toi entrer dans la vie mutilé ou boiteux, que d'être jeté, ayant deux pieds ou deux mains, dans le feu éternel. (aiōnios g166)

If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life maimed or crippled, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the everlasting fire. (aiōnios g166)

9 Et si ton œil est pour toi une occasion de chute, arrache-le et jette-le loin de toi: il vaut mieux pour toi entrer dans la vie avec un seul œil, que d'être jeté, ayant deux yeux, dans la géhenne du feu. (Geenna g1067)

If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the fire of hell. (Geenna g1067)

10 " Prenez garde de mépriser aucun de ces petits, car je vous dis que leurs anges dans le ciel voient sans cesse la face de mon Père qui est dans les cieux.

See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.

11 " ( Car le Fils de l'homme est venu sauver ce qui était perdu. )

12 " Que vous en semble? Si un homme a cent brebis, et qu'une d'elles s'égare, ne laisse-t-il pas dans la montagne les quatre-vingt-dix-neuf autres, pour aller chercher celle qui s'est égarée?

"What do you think? If someone has one hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine, go to the mountains, and seek that which has gone astray?

13 Et s'il a le bonheur de la trouver, je vous le dis en vérité, il a plus de joie pour elle que pour les quatre-vingt-dix-neuf qui ne se sont pas égarées.

If he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine which have not gone astray.

14 De même c'est la volonté de votre Père qui est dans les cieux, qu'il ne se perde pas un seul de ces petits.

Even so it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

15 " Si ton frère a péché contre toi, va et reprends-le entre toi et lui seul; s'il t'écoute, tu auras gagné ton frère.

"If your brother sins against you, go, show him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained back your brother.

16 S'il ne t'écoute pas, prends avec toi encore une ou deux personnes, afin que toute cause se décide sur la parole de deux ou trois témoins.

But if he does not listen, take one or two more with you, that at the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.

17 S'il ne les écoute pas, dis-le à l'Eglise; et s'il n'écoute pas non plus l'Eglise, qu'il soit pour toi comme un païen et un publicain.

If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. If he refuses to hear the church also, let him be to you as an unbeliever or a tax collector.

18 En vérité, je vous le dis, tout ce que vous lierez sur la terre sera lié dans le ciel, et tout ce que vous délierez sur la terre sera délié dans le ciel.

Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

19 " Je vous le dis encore, si deux d'entre vous s'accordent sur la terre, quelque chose qu'ils demandent, ils l'obtiendront de mon Père qui est dans les cieux.

Again, truly I tell you, that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they will ask, it will be done for them by my Father who is in heaven.

20 Car là où deux ou trois sont assemblés en mon nom, je suis au milieu d'eux. "

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them."

21 Alors Pierre s'approchant de lui: " Seigneur, dit-il, si mon frère pèche contre moi, combien de fois lui pardonnerai-je? Sera-ce jusqu'à sept fois? "

Then Peter came to him and said, "Lord, how often can my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?"

22 Jésus lui dit: " Je ne te dis pas jusqu'à sept fois, mais jusqu'à septante fois sept fois.

Jesus said to him, "I do not tell you up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

23 " C'est pourquoi le royaume des cieux est semblable à un roi qui voulut régler ses comptes avec ses serviteurs.

Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king, who wanted to reconcile accounts with his servants.

24 Le règlement des comptes étant commencé, on lui amena un homme qui lui devait dix mille talents.

When he had begun to reconcile, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.

25 Comme il n'avait pas de quoi payer, son maître ordonna qu'on le vendît, lui, sa femme, ses enfants et tout ce qu'il avait pour acquitter sa dette.

But because he could not pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, with his wife and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.

26 Le serviteur, se jetant à ses pieds, le conjurait en disant: Aie patience envers moi, et je te paierai tout.

The servant therefore fell down and kneeled before him, saying, 'Lord, have patience with me, and I will repay you all.'

27 Touché de compassion, le maître de ce serviteur le laissa aller et lui remit sa dette.

The lord of that servant, being moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.

28 Le serviteur, à peine sorti, rencontra un de ses compagnons qui lui devait cent deniers. Le saisissant à la gorge, il l'étouffait en disant: Paie ce que tu dois.

"But that servant went out, and found one of his fellow servants, who owed him one hundred denarii, and he grabbed him, and took him by the throat, saying, 'Pay what you owe.'

29 Son compagnon, se jetant à ses pieds, le conjurait en disant: Aie patience envers moi, et je te paierai tout.

"So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, 'Have patience with me, and I will repay you all.'

30 Mais lui, sans vouloir l'entendre, s'en alla et le fit mettre en prison jusqu'à ce qu'il payât sa dette.

He would not, but went and cast him into prison, until he should pay back that which was due.

31 Ce que voyant, les autres serviteurs en furent tout contristés, et ils vinrent raconter à leur maître ce qui s'était passé.

So when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were exceedingly sorry, and came and told to their lord all that was done.

32 Alors le maître l'appela et lui dit: Serviteur méchant, je t'avais remis toute ta dette, parce que tu m'en avais supplié.

Then his lord called him in, and said to him, 'You wicked servant. I forgave you all that debt, because you begged me.

33 Ne devais-tu pas avoir pitié de ton compagnon, comme j'ai eu pitié de toi?

Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow servant, even as I had mercy on you?'

34 Et son maître irrité le livra aux exécuteurs, jusqu'à ce qu'il eût payé toute sa dette.

His lord was angry, and delivered him to the tormentors, until he should pay all that was due.

35 Ainsi vous traitera mon Père céleste, si chacun de vous ne pardonne à son frère du fond de son cœur. "

So my heavenly Father will also do to you, if you do not each forgive your brother his trespasses from your heart."
