Matthieu 15
1 Alors des Scribes et des Pharisiens venus de Jérusalem s'approchèrent de Jésus, et lui dirent:
Then some Pharisees and Teachers of the Law came to Jesus, and said:
2 " Pourquoi vos disciples transgressent-ils la tradition des anciens? Car ils ne se lavent pas les mains lorsqu'ils prennent leur repas. "
“How is it that your disciples break the traditions of our ancestors? For they do not wash their hands when they eat food.”
3 Il leur répondit: " Et vous, pourquoi transgressez-vous le commandement de Dieu par votre tradition?
His reply was: “How is it that you on your side break God’s commandments out of respect for your own traditions?
4 Car Dieu a dit: Honore ton père et ta mère; et: Quiconque maudira son père ou sa mère, qu'il soit puni de mort.
For God said — ‘Honour thy father and mother,’ and ‘Let him who reviles his father or mother suffer death,’
5 Mais vous, vous dites: Quiconque dit à son père ou à sa mère: Ce dont j'aurais pu vous assister, j'en ait fait offrande, —
but you say ‘Whenever any one says to his father or mother “Whatever of mine might have been of service to you is ‘Given to God,’”
6 n'a pas besoin d'honorer autrement son père ou sa mère. Et vous mettez ainsi à néant le commandement de Dieu par votre tradition.
he is in no way bound to honour his father.’ In this way you have nullified the words of God on account of your traditions.
7 Hypocrites, Isaïe a bien prophétisé de vous quand il a dit:
Hypocrites! It was well said by Isaiah when he prophesied about you —
8 Ce peuple m'honore des lèvres, mais son cœur est loin de moi.
‘This is a people that honour me with their lips, While their hearts are far removed from me;
9 C'est en vain qu'ils m'honorent, en donnant des préceptes qui ne sont que des commandements venant des hommes. "
but vainly do they worship me, For they teach but the precepts of men.’”
10 Puis, ayant fait approcher la foule, il leur dit: " Écoutez et comprenez.
Then Jesus called the people to him, and said: “Listen, and mark my words.
11 Ce n'est pas ce qui entre dans la bouche qui souille l'homme; mais ce qui sort de la bouche, voilà ce qui souille l'homme. "
It is not what enters a man’s mouth that ‘defiles’ him, but what comes out from his mouth — that does defile him!”
12 Alors ses disciples venant à lui, lui dirent: " Savez-vous que les Pharisiens, en entendant cette parole, se sont scandalisés? "
On this his disciples came up to him, and said: “Do you know that the Pharisees were shocked on hearing what you said?”
13 Il répondit: " Toute plante que n'a pas plantée mon Père céleste, sera arrachée.
“Every plant,” Jesus replied, “that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up.
14 Laissez-les; ce sont des aveugles qui conduisent des aveugles. Or, si un aveugle conduit un aveugle, ils tomberont tous deux dans la fosse. "
Let them be; they are but blind guides; and, if one blind man guides another, both of them will fall into a ditch.”
15 Pierre, prenant la parole, lui dit: " Expliquez-nous cette parabole. "
Upon this, Peter said to Jesus: “Explain this saying to us.”
16 Jésus répondit: " Êtes-vous encore, vous aussi, sans intelligence?
“What, do even you understand nothing yet?” Jesus exclaimed.
17 Ne comprenez-vous pas que tout ce qui entre dans la bouche va au ventre, et est rejeté au lieu secret?
“Do not you see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is afterwards expelled?
18 Mais ce qui sort de la bouche vient du cœur, et c'est là ce qui souille l'homme.
But the things that come out from the mouth proceed from the heart, and it is these that defile a man;
19 Car c'est du cœur que viennent les mauvaises pensées, les meurtres, les adultères, les impudicités, les vols, les faux témoignages, les paroles injurieuses.
for out of the heart proceed evil thoughts — murder, adultery, unchastity, theft, perjury, slander.
20 Voilà ce qui souille l'homme; mais manger sans s'être lavé les mains, cela ne souille point l'homme. "
These are the things that defile a man; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”
21 Jésus étant parti de là, se retira du côté de Tyr et de Sidon.
On going away from that place, Jesus retired to the country round Tyre and Sidon.
22 Et voilà qu'une femme cananéenne, de ce pays-là, sortit en criant à haute voix: " Ayez pitié de moi, Seigneur, fils de David; ma fille est cruellement tourmentée par le démon. "
There, a Canaanite woman of that district came out and began calling to Jesus: “Take pity on me, Master, Son of David; my daughter is grievously possessed by a demon.”
23 Jésus ne lui répondit pas un mot. Alors ses disciples, s'étant approchés, le prièrent en disant: " Renvoyez-la, car elle nous poursuit de ses cris. "
But Jesus did not answer her a word; and his disciples came up and begged him to send her away. “She keeps calling out after us,” they said.
24 Il répondit: " Je n'ai été envoyé qu'aux brebis perdues de la maison d'Israël. "
“I was not sent,” replied Jesus, “to any one except the lost sheep of Israel.”
25 Mais cette femme vint se prosterner devant lui, en disant: " Seigneur, secourez-moi. "
But the woman came, and, bowing to the ground before him, said: “Master, help me.”
26 Il répondit: " Il n'est pas bien de prendre le pain des enfants pour le jeter aux petits chiens. "
“It is not fair,” replied Jesus, “to take the children’s food and throw it to dogs.”
27 " Il est vrai, Seigneur, dit-elle; mais les petits chiens mangent au moins les miettes qui tombent de la table de leur maître. "
“Yes, Master,” she said, “for even dogs do feed on the scraps that fall from their owners’ table.”
28 Alors Jésus lui dit: " O femme, votre foi est grande: qu'il vous soit fait selon votre désir. " Et sa fille fut guérie à l'heure même.
“Your faith is great,” was his reply to the woman; “it shall be as you wish!” And her daughter was cured that very hour.
29 Jésus quitta ces lieux et vint près de la mer de Galilée. Étant monté sur la montagne, il s'y assit.
On leaving that place, Jesus went to the shore of the Sea of Galilee; and then went up the hill, and sat down., you will do what not only what has been done to the fig tree, but, even if you should say to this hill ‘Be lifted up and hurled into the sea!’ it would be done.
30 Et de grandes troupes de gens s'approchèrent de lui, ayant avec eux des boiteux, des aveugles, des sourds-muets, des estropiés et beaucoup d'autres malades. Ils les mirent à ses pieds, et il les guérit;
Great crowds of people came to him, bringing with them those who were lame, crippled, blind, or dumb, and many others. They put them down at his feet, and he cured them;
31 de sorte que la multitude était dans l'admiration, en voyant les muets parler, les estropiés guéris, les boiteux marcher, les aveugles voir, et elle glorifiait le Dieu d'Israël.
and the crowds were astonished, when they saw the dumb talking, the cripples made sound, the lame walking about, and the blind with their sight restored; and they praised the God of Israel.
32 Cependant Jésus, ayant appelé ses disciples, leur dit: " J'ai compassion de cette foule; car voilà déjà trois jours qu'ils restent près de moi, et ils n'ont rien à manger. Je ne veux pas les renvoyer à jeun, de peur que les forces ne leur manquent en chemin. "
Afterwards Jesus called his disciples to him, and said: “My heart is moved at the sight of all these people, for they have already been with me three days and they have nothing to eat; and I am unwilling to send them away hungry, for fear that they should break down on the way.”
33 Les disciples lui dirent: " Où trouver dans un désert assez de pains pour rassasier une si grande foule? "
“Where can we,” his disciples asked, “in a lonely place find enough bread for such a crowd as this?”
34 Jésus leur demanda: " Combien avez-vous de pains? " " Sept, lui dirent-ils, et quelques petits poissons. "
“How many loaves have you?” said Jesus. “Seven,” they answered, “and a few small fish.”
35 Alors il fit asseoir la foule par terre,
Telling the crowd to sit down on the ground,
36 prit les sept pains et les poissons, et, ayant rendu grâces, il les rompit et les donna à ses disciples, et ceux-ci au peuple.
Jesus took the seven loaves and the fish, and, after saying the thanksgiving, broke them, and gave them to the disciples; and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
37 Tous mangèrent et furent rassasiés, et des morceaux qui restaient, on emporta sept corbeilles pleines.
Every one had sufficient to eat, and they picked up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left.
38 Or le nombre de ceux qui avaient mangé s'élevait à quatre mille, sans compter les femmes et les enfants.
The men who ate were four thousand in number without counting women and children.
39 Après avoir renvoyé le peuple, Jésus monta dans la barque et vint dans le pays de Magédan.
Then, after dismissing the crowds, Jesus got into the boat, and went to the neighbourhood of Magadan.
