Jean 13
1 Avant la fête de Pâque, Jésus, sachant que son heure était venue de passer de ce monde à son Père, après avoir aimé les siens qui étaient dans le monde, les aima jusqu'à la fin.
Before the Passover Festival began, Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave the world and go to the Father. He had loved those who were his own in the world, and he loved them to the last.
2 Pendant le souper, lorsque déjà le diable avait mis dans le cœur de Judas, fils de Simon Iscariote, le dessein de le livrer,
The Devil had already put the thought of betraying Jesus into the mind of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon;
3 Jésus, qui savait que son Père avait remis toutes choses entre ses mains, et qu'il était sorti de Dieu et s'en allait à Dieu,
and at supper, Jesus — although knowing that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God, and was to return to God —
4 se leva de table, posa son manteau, et, ayant pris un linge, il s'en ceignit.
Rose from his place, and, taking off his upper garments, tied a towel round his waist.
5 Puis il versa de l'eau dans le bassin et se mit à laver les pieds de ses disciples, et à les essuyer avec le linge dont il était ceint.
He then poured some water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel which was tied round him.
6 Il vint donc à Simon-Pierre; et Pierre lui dit: " Quoi, vous Seigneur, vous me lavez les pieds! "
When he came to Simon Peter, Peter said: “You, Master! Are you going to wash my feet?”
7 Jésus lui répondit: " Ce que je fais, tu ne le sais pas maintenant, mais tu le comprendras bientôt. "
“You do not understand now what I am doing,” replied Jesus, “but you will learn by and by.”
8 Pierre lui dit: " Non, jamais vous ne me laverez les pieds. " Jésus lui répondit: " Si je ne te lave, tu n'auras point de part avec moi. " (aiōn g165)
“You shall never wash my feet!” exclaimed Peter. “Unless I wash you,” answered Jesus, “you have nothing in common with me.” (aiōn g165)
9 Simon-Pierre lui dit: " Seigneur, non seulement les pieds, mais encore les mains et la tête! "
“Then, Master, not my feet only,” exclaimed Simon Peter, “but also my hands and my head.”
10 Jésus lui dit: " Celui qui a pris un bain n'a besoin que de laver ses pieds; il est pur tout entier. Et vous aussi, vous êtes purs, mais non pas tous. "
“He who has bathed,” replied Jesus, “has no need to wash, unless it be his feet, but is altogether clean; and you,” he said to the disciples, “are clean, yet not all of you.”
11 Car il savait quel était celui qui allait le livrer; c'est pourquoi il dit: " Vous n'êtes pas tous purs. "
For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said ‘You are not all clean.’
12 Après qu'il leur eut lavé les pieds, et repris son manteau, il se remit à table et leur dit: " Comprenez-vous ce que je vous ai fait?
When he had washed their feet, and had put on his upper garments and taken his place, he spoke to them again. “Do you understand what I have been doing to you?” he asked.
13 Vous m'appelez le Maître et le Seigneur: et vous dites bien, car je le suis.
“You yourselves call me ‘the Teacher’ and ‘the Master’, and you are right, for I am both.
14 Si donc moi, le Seigneur et le Maître, je vous ai lavé les pieds, vous devez aussi vous laver les pieds les uns aux autres.
If I, then — ‘the Master’ and ‘the Teacher’ — have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet;
15 Car je vous ai donné l'exemple, afin que, comme je vous ai fait, vous fassiez aussi vous-mêmes.
for I have given you an example, so that you may do just as I have done to you.
16 En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, le serviteur n'est pas plus grand que son maître, ni l'apôtre plus grand que celui qui l'a envoyé.
In truth I tell you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor yet a messenger than the man who sends him.
17 Si vous savez ces choses vous êtes heureux, pourvu que vous les pratiquiez.
Now that you know these things, happy are you if you do them.
18 Je ne dis pas cela de vous tous; je connais ceux que j'ai élus; mais il faut que l'Écriture s'accomplisse: Celui qui mange le pain avec moi, a levé le talon contre moi.
I am not speaking about all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but this is in fulfilment of the words of Scripture — ‘He that is eating my bread has lifted his heel against me.’
19 Je vous le dis dès maintenant, avant que la chose arrive, afin que, lorsqu'elle sera arrivée, vous reconnaissiez qui je suis.
For the future I shall tell you of things before they take place, so that, when they take place, you may believe that I am what I am.
20 En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, quiconque me reçoit, reçoit celui qui m'a envoyé. "
In truth I tell you, he who receives any one that I send receives me; and he who receives me receives him who sent me.”
21 Ayant ainsi parlé, Jésus fut troublé en son esprit; et il affirma expressément: " En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, un de vous me livrera. "
After saying this, Jesus was much troubled, and said solemnly: “In truth I tell you that it is one of you who will betray me.”
22 Les disciples se regardaient les uns les autres, ne sachant de qui il parlait.
The disciples looked at one another, wondering whom he meant.
23 Or, l'un d'eux était couché sur le sein de Jésus; c'était celui que Jésus aimait.
Next to Jesus, in the place on his right hand, was one of his disciples, whom he loved.
24 Simon-Pierre lui fit donc signe pour lui dire: " Qui est celui dont il parle? "
So Simon Peter made signs to that disciple, and whispered: “Tell me who it is that he means.”
25 Le disciple, s'étant penché sur le sein de Jésus, lui dit: " Seigneur, qui est-ce? "
Being in this position, that disciple leant back on Jesus’ shoulder, and asked him: “Who is it, Master?”
26 Jésus répondit: " C'est celui à qui je présenterai le morceau trempé. " Et ayant trempé du pain, il le donna à Judas Iscariote, fils de Simon.
“It is the one,” answered Jesus, “to whom I shall give a piece of bread after dipping it in the dish.” And, when Jesus had dipped the bread, he took it and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot;
27 Aussitôt que Judas l'eut pris, Satan entra en lui; et Jésus lui dit: " Ce que tu fais, fais-le vite. "
and it was then, after he had received it, that Satan took possession of him. So Jesus said to him: “Do at once what you are going to do.”
28 Aucun de ceux qui étaient à table ne comprit pourquoi il lui disait cela.
But no one at table understood why he said this to Judas.
29 Quelques-uns pensaient que, Judas ayant la bourse, Jésus voulait lui dire: " Achète ce qu'il faut pour la fête, " ou: " Donne quelque chose aux pauvres. "
Some thought that, as Judas kept the purse, Jesus meant that he was to buy some things needed for the Festival, or to give something to the poor.
30 Judas ayant pris le morceau de pain, se hâta de sortir. Il était nuit.
After taking the piece of bread, Judas went out immediately; and it was night.
31 Lorsque Judas fut sorti, Jésus dit: " Maintenant le Fils de l'homme a été glorifié, et Dieu a été glorifié en lui.
When Judas had gone out, Jesus said: “Now the Son of Man has been exalted, and God has been exalted through him;
32 Si Dieu a été glorifié en lui, Dieu aussi le glorifiera en lui-même, et il le glorifiera bientôt.
and God will exalt him with himself — yes, he will exalt him forthwith.
33 Mes petits enfants, je ne suis plus avec vous que pour un peu de temps. Vous me chercherez et comme j'ai dit aux Juifs qu'ils ne pouvaient venir où je vais, je vous le dis aussi maintenant.
My children, I am to be with you but a little while longer. You will look for me; and what I said to the Jews — ‘You cannot come where I am going’ — I now say to you.
34 Je vous donne un commandement nouveau: que vous vous aimiez les uns les autres; que comme je vous ai aimés, vous vous aimiez aussi les uns les autres.
I give you a new commandment — Love one another; love one another as I have loved you.
35 C'est à cela que tous connaîtront que vous êtes mes disciples, si vous avez de l'amour les uns pour les autres. "
It is by this that every one will recognise you as my disciples — by your loving one another.”
36 Simon-Pierre lui dit: " Seigneur, où allez-vous? " Jésus répondit: " Où je vais, tu ne peux me suivre à présent; mais tu me suivras plus tard. —
“Where are you going, Master?” asked Peter. “I am going where you cannot now follow me,” answered Jesus, “but you shall follow me later.”
37 Seigneur, lui dit Pierre, pourquoi ne puis-je vous suivre à présent? Je donnerai ma vie pour vous. "
“Why cannot I follow you now, Master?” asked Peter. “I will lay down my life for you.”
38 Jésus lui répondit: " Tu donneras ta vie pour moi! En vérité, en vérité, je te le dis, le coq ne chantera pas, avant que tu ne m'aies renié trois fois. "
“Will you lay down your life for me?” replied Jesus. “In truth I tell you, the cock will not crow till you have disowned me three times.
