Job 1
1 Il y avait dans le pays de Hus un homme nommé Job; cet homme était intègre, droit, craignant Dieu et éloigné du mal.
A man, there was—in the land of Uz, Job, his name, —and that man was blameless and upright, and one who revered God, and avoided evil.
2 Il lui naquit sept fils et trois filles.
And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
3 Il possédait sept mille brebis, trois mille chameaux, cinq cents paires de bœufs, cinq cent ânesses et un très grand nombre de serviteurs; et cet homme était le plus grand de tous les fils de l'Orient.
And his substance was—seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a body of servants exceeding large, —thus was that man the greatest of all the sons of the East.
4 Ses fils avaient coutume d'aller les uns chez les autres et de se donner un festin, chacun à leur tour, et ils envoyaient inviter leurs trois sœurs à venir manger et boire avec eux.
Now his sons were wont to go, and make a banquet, at the house of each one upon his day, —and to send and call their three sisters, to eat and to drink with them.
5 Et, quand le cercle des festins était fini, Job envoyait chercher ses fils et les purifiait; puis il se levait de bon matin et offrait un holocauste pour chacun d'eux, car il se disait: « Peut-être mes fils ont-ils péché et offensé Dieu dans leur cœur!... » Et Job faisait ainsi chaque fois.
And so it was, when the days of the banquet came round, that Job sent and hallowed them, and rising early in the morning offered ascending-sacrifices according to the number of them all; for Job said, Peradventure my sons have sinned, and have cursed God in their hearts. Thus and thus, was Job wont to do all the days.
6 Il arriva un jour que, les fils de Dieu étant venus se présenter devant Yahweh, Satan vint aussi au milieu d'eux.
Now there came a certain day, when the sons of God entered in to present themselves unto Yahweh, —so the accuser also entered, in their midst.
7 Et Yahweh dit à Satan: « D'où viens-tu? » Satan répondit à Yahweh et dit: « De parcourir le monde et de m'y promener. »
And Yahweh said unto the accuser, Whence comest thou? And the accuser answered Yahweh, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and wandering about therein.
8 Yahweh dit à Satan: « As-tu remarqué mon serviteur Job? Il n'y a pas d'homme comme lui sur la terre, intègre, droit, craignant Dieu et éloigné du mal. »
And Yahweh said unto the accuser, Hast thou applied thy heart unto my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a man blameless and upright, one revering God and avoiding evil?
9 Satan répondit à Yahweh: « Est-ce gratuitement que Job craint Dieu?
And the accuser answered Yahweh, and said, Is it, for nought, that Job revereth God?
10 Ne l'as-tu pas entouré comme d'une clôture, lui, sa maison et tout ce qui lui appartient? Tu as béni l'œuvre de ses mains, et ses troupeaux couvrent le pays.
Hast not, thou thyself, made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? The work of his hands, thou hast blessed, and, his substance, hath broken forth in the land.
11 Mais étends la main, touche à tout ce qui lui appartient, et on verra s'il ne te maudit pas en face! »
But, in very deed, put forth, I pray thee, thy hand, and smite all that he hath, —verily, unto thy face, will he curse thee.
12 Yahweh dit à Satan: « Voici, tout ce qui lui appartient est en ton pouvoir; seulement ne porte pas la main sur lui. » Et Satan se retira de devant la face de Yahweh.
And Yahweh said unto the accuser, Lo! all that he hath, is in thy hand, only, against himself, do not put forth thy hand. So the accuser went forth from the presence of Yahweh.
13 Or un jour que ses fils et ses filles mangeaient et buvaient du vin dans la maison de leur frère aîné,
And there came a certain day, —when his sons and his daughters were eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their eldest brother.
14 un messager vint dire à Job: « Les bœufs étaient à labourer et les ânesses paissaient autour d'eux;
And, a messenger, came in unto Job, and said, —The oxen, were plowing, and, the asses, feeding beside them;
15 tout à coup les Sabéens sont survenus et les ont enlevés. Ils ont passé les serviteurs au fil de l'épée, et je me suis échappé seul pour te l'annoncer. »
when the Sabeans swooped down, and took them, and, the young men, smote they with the edge of the sword, —and escaped am, only I alone, too tell thee.
16 Il parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre arriva et dit: « Le feu de Dieu est tombé du ciel; il a embrasé les brebis et les serviteurs et les a dévorés, et je me suis échappé seul pour te l'annoncer. »
Yet was this one speaking, when, another, came in and said, —A fire of God, fell out of the heavens, and burned up the sheep and the young men, and consumed them; and escaped am, only I alone, to tell thee.
17 Il parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre arriva et dit: « Les Chaldéens, partagés en trois bandes, se sont jetés sur les chameaux et les ont enlevés. Ils ont passé les serviteurs au fil de l'épée, et je me suis échappé seul pour te l'annoncer. »
Yet was this one speaking, when, another, came in and said, The Chaldeans, appointed three chiefs, and spread out against the camels, and took them, and, the young men, smote they with the edge of the sword; and escaped am, only I alone, to tell thee.
18 Il parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre arriva et dit: « Tes fils et tes filles mangeaient et buvaient du vin chez leur frère aîné,
Yet was this one speaking, when, another, came in and said, —Thy sons and thy daughters, were eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their eldest brother;
19 et voilà qu'un grand vent s'est élevé de l'autre côté du désert et a saisi les quatre coins de la maison; elle s'est écroulée sur les jeunes gens, et ils sont morts, et je me suis échappé seul pour te l'annoncer. »
when lo! a great wind, came from over the desert, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they died, —and escaped am, only I alone, to tell thee.
20 Alors Job se leva, il déchira son manteau et se rasa la tête; puis, se jetant par terre, il adora
Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell to the earth and worshipped;
21 et dit: « Nu je suis sorti du sein de ma mère, et nu j'y retournerai. Yahweh a donné, Yahweh a ôté; que le nom de Yahweh soit béni! »
and said—Naked came I forth from the womb of my mother, and naked must I return thither, Yahweh, gave, and, Yahweh, hath taken away, —The name of Yahweh be blessed!
22 En tout cela, Job ne pécha point et ne dit rien d'insensé contre Dieu.
In all this, Job sinned not, nor imputed folly unto God.
