Galates 3

1 O Galates insensés! qui vous a fascinés, vous aux yeux de qui a été tracée l'image de Jésus-Christ crucifié.

Foolish Galatians! Who has been enchanting you – you before whose eyes Jesus Christ was depicted on the cross?

2 Voici seulement ce que je voudrais savoir de vous: Est-ce par les œuvres de la Loi que vous avez reçu l'Esprit, ou par la soumission de la foi?

Here is the one thing that I want to find out from you – Did you receive the Spirit as the result of obedience to Law, or of your having listened with faith?

3 Avez-vous si peu de sens, qu'après avoir commencé par l'esprit, vous finissiez par la chair?

Can you be so foolish? After beginning with what is spiritual, do you now end with what is external?

4 Avez-vous fait une telle expérience en vain? si toutefois c'est en vain.

Did you go through so much to no purpose? – if indeed it really was to no purpose!

5 Celui qui vous confère l'Esprit et qui opère parmi vous des miracles, le fait-il donc par les œuvres de la Loi, ou par la soumission de la foi?

He who supplies you abundantly with his Spirit and endows you with such powers – does he do this as the result of obedience to Law? Or as the result of your having listened with faith?

6 comme il est écrit: " Abraham crut à Dieu, et cela lui fut imputé à justice. "

It is just as it was with Abraham – he had faith in God, and his faith was regarded by God as righteousness.

7 Reconnaissez donc que ceux-là sont fils d'Abraham, qui sont de la foi.

You see, then, that those whose lives are based on faith are the sons of Abraham.

8 Aussi l'Ecriture, prévoyant que Dieu justifierait les nations par la foi, annonça d'avance à Abraham cette bonne nouvelle: " Toutes les nations seront bénies en toi. "

And scripture, foreseeing that God would pronounce the Gentiles righteous as the result of faith, foretold the good news to Abraham in the words – ‘Through you all the Gentiles will be blessed.’

9 De sorte que ceux qui sont de la foi sont bénis avec le fidèle Abraham.

And, therefore, those whose lives are based on faith share the blessings bestowed on the faith of Abraham.

10 En effet tous ceux qui s'appuient sur les œuvres de la Loi sont sous la malédiction; car il est écrit: " Maudit quiconque n'est pas constant à observer tout ce qui est écrit dans le livre de la Loi. "

All who rely on obedience to Law are under a curse, for scripture says – ‘Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all that is written in the book of the Law, and do it.’

11 Or que par la Loi nul ne soit justifié devant Dieu, cela est manifeste, puisque le " juste vivra par la foi. "

Again, it is evident that no one is pronounced righteous before God through Law, for we read – ‘Through faith the righteous will find life.’

12 Or la Loi ne procède pas de la foi; mais elle dit: " Celui qui accomplira ces commandements vivra en eux. "

But the Law is not based on faith; no, its words are – ‘Those who practice these precepts will find life through them.’

13 Le Christ nous a rachetés de la malédiction de la Loi, en se faisant malédiction pour nous, — car il est écrit: " Maudit quiconque est pendu au bois, " —

Christ ransomed us from the curse pronounced in the Law, by taking the curse on himself for us, for scripture says – ‘Cursed is anyone who is hanged on a tree.’

14 afin que la bénédiction promise à Abraham s'étendît aux nations dans le Christ Jésus, afin que nous pussions recevoir par la foi l'Esprit promis.

And this he did that the blessing given to Abraham might be extended to the Gentiles through their union with Jesus Christ; that so, through our faith, we also might receive the promised gift of the Spirit.

15 Frères, — je parle selon les usages des hommes, — un contrat en bonne forme, bien que l'engagement soit pris par un homme, n'est annulé par personne, et personne n'y ajoute.

To take an illustration, friends, from daily life – No one sets aside even an agreement between two people, when once it has been confirmed, nor do they add conditions to it.

16 Or les promesses ont été faites à Abraham et à sa descendance. On ne dit pas: " Et à ses descendants, " comme s'il s'agissait de plusieurs; mais il dit: " A ta descendance, " comme ne parlant que d'un seul, savoir le Christ.

Now it was to Abraham that the promises were made, ‘and to his offspring.’ It was not said ‘to his offsprings,’ as if many persons were meant, but the words were ‘to your offspring,’ showing that one person was meant – and that was Christ.

17 Voici ce que je veux dire: Dieu ayant conclu une alliance en bonne forme, la loi qui est venue quatre cent trente ans après ne la rend pas nulle, de manière à rendre vaine la promesse.

My point is this – An agreement already confirmed by God cannot be canceled by the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, so as to cause the promise to be set aside.

18 Car si l'héritage s'obtenait par la Loi, il ne viendrait plus d'une promesse; or, c'est par une promesse que Dieu a fait à Abraham ce don de sa grâce.

If our heritage is the result of Law, then it has ceased to be the result of a promise. Yet God conferred it on Abraham by a promise.

19 Pourquoi donc la Loi? Elle a été ajoutée à cause des transgressions, jusqu'à ce que vînt " la descendance " à qui la promesse avait été faite; elle a été promulguée par les anges, par l'entremise d'un médiateur.

What, then, you ask, was the use of the Law? It was a later addition, to make people conscious of their wrongdoings, and intended to last only until the coming of that offspring to whom the promise had been made; and it was delivered through angels by a mediator.

20 Or le médiateur n'est pas médiateur d'un seul; et Dieu est un.

Now mediation implies more than one person, but God is one only.

21 La Loi va-t-elle donc contre les promesses de Dieu? Loin de là! S'il eût été donné une loi capable de procurer la vie, la justice viendrait réellement de la loi.

Does that set the Law in opposition to God’s promises? Heaven forbid! For, if a Law had been given capable of bestowing life, then righteousness would have actually owed its existence to Law.

22 Mais l'Ecriture a tout enfermé sous le péché, afin que, par la foi en Jésus-Christ, ce qui avait été promis fût donné à ceux qui croient.

But the words of scripture represent the whole world as being in bondage to sin, so that the promised blessing, dependent, as it is, on faith in Jesus Christ, may be given to those who have faith in him.

23 Avant que vînt la foi, nous étions enfermés sous la garde de la Loi, en vue de la foi qui devait être révélée.

Before the coming of faith, we were kept under the guard of the Law, in bondage, awaiting the faith that was destined to be revealed.

24 Ainsi la Loi a été notre pédagogue pour nous conduire au Christ, afin que nous fussions justifiés par la foi.

Thus the Law has proved a guide to lead us to Christ, in order that we may be pronounced righteous as the result of faith.

25 Mais la foi étant venue, nous ne sommes plus sous un pédagogue.

But now that faith has come we no longer need a guide.

26 Car vous êtes tous fils de Dieu par la foi dans le Christ Jésus.

For you are all sons of God, through your faith in Christ Jesus.

27 Vous tous, en effet, qui avez été baptisés dans le Christ, vous avez revêtu le Christ.

For all of you who were baptized into union with Christ clothed yourselves with Christ.

28 Il n'y a plus ni Juif ni Grec; il n'y a plus ni esclave ni homme libre; il n'y a plus ni homme ni femme: car vous n'êtes tous qu'une personne dans le Christ Jésus.

All distinctions between Jew and Greek, slave and free, male and female, have vanished; for in union with Christ Jesus you are all one.

29 Et si vous êtes au Christ, vous êtes donc " descendance " d'Abraham, héritiers selon la promesse.

And, since you belong to Christ, it follows that you are Abraham’s offspring and, under the promise, sharers in the inheritance.
