Ézéchiel 31

1 La onzième année, au troisième mois, le premier du mois, la parole de Yahweh me fut adressée en ces termes:

And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first of the month, that the word of Yahweh came unto me, saying:

2 " Fils de l'homme, dis à Pharaon, roi d'Egypte, et à sa multitude: A qui ressembles-tu dans ta grandeur?

Son of man Say unto Pharaoh king of Egypt and unto his multitude, — Whom art thou like in thy greatness?

3 Voilà qu'Assur était un cèdre sur le Liban, à la belle ramure, à l'ombrage épais, à la taille élevée, et ayant sa cime dans les nues.

Lo! Assyria, was a cedar in Lebanon, Beautiful in bough and Dense in foliage and Lofty in stature, — and Among the clouds, came to be his top:

4 Les eaux l'avaient fait croître, l'abîme l'avait fait grandir, en faisant couler ses fleuves autour du lieu où il était planté et en envoyant ses ruisseaux à tous les arbres des champs.

The waters made him great, the roaring deep, made him high—with its currents going round about the place where it was planted, Its channels also, it sent forth unto all the trees of the field.

5 C'est pourquoi sa taille s'élevait, plus haute que les arbres des champs; ses branches avaient grandi, ses rameaux s'étaient allongés, grâce aux eaux abondantes du temps de sa croissance.

For this cause higher, was his stature than any of the trees of the field, -And multiplied were his boughs And lengthened were his branches, By reason of the mighty waters when he shot forth shoots.

6 Dans ses branches tous les oiseaux du ciel nichaient; sous ses rameaux mettaient bas tous les animaux des champs, et à son ombre étaient assises des nations nombreuses.

Among his branches, all the birds of the heavens, made their nests, And under his boughs, all the wild beasts of the field, brought forth, — And, in his shade, dwelt all the mighty nations.

7 Il était beau par sa grandeur, par la longueur de ses branches, car ses racines plongeaient dans des eaux abondantes.

Thus became he beautiful in his greatness, In the length of his waving branches, Because his root had gone towards mighty waters.

8 Les cèdres ne l'obscurcissaient pas dans le jardin de Dieu, les cyprès n'égalaient pas ses branches, et les platanes n'étaient pas comme ses rameaux; aucun arbre dans le jardin de Dieu ne l'égalait en beauté.

Cedars hid him not. in the garden of God, Fir-trees were not like unto his boughs, Nor plane-trees, like his branches, —no, tree in the garden of God, was like unto him in his beauty.

9 Je l'avais rendu beau par la multitude de ses rameaux; tous les arbres d'Eden lui portaient envie, tous ceux qui sont dans le jardin de Dieu.

Beautiful, I made him in the abundance of his waving branches, - Therefore was he envied by all the trees of Eden, which were in the garden of God.

10 C'est pourquoi ainsi parle le Seigneur Yahweh: Parce qu'il s'est élevé en hauteur, parce qu'il a porté sa cime jusque dans les nues; et que son cœur s'est enorgueilli de son élévation,

Therefore Thus, saith My Lord Yahweh, Because thou hast become lofty in stature, And he hath stretched his top among the clouds, And his heart is exalted in his loftiness.

11 je l'ai livré aux mains du dieu des nations, qui le traitera à sa guise; à cause de sa méchanceté, je l'ai chassé.

Let me then deliver him into the hand of the chief of the nations, He shall effectually deal with him! According to his lawlessness, have I driven him out:

12 Des étrangers l'ont coupé, — nation féroce entre toutes, — et laissé là; sur les montagnes et dans toutes les vallées, ses branches sont tombées; ses rameaux brisés gisent dans tous les ravins du pays; tous les peuples de la terre se sont éloignés de son ombre et l'ont abandonné.

Therefore have foreigners the terrible of the nations cut him down. And abandoned him, — Upon the mountains and in all valleys, have fallen his waving branches And broken have been his boughs in all the river-beds of the land, And all the peoples of the earth have come down out of his shade. And abandoned him:

13 Sur ses débris tous les oiseaux du ciel viennent se poser, et dans ses rameaux se sont retirés tous les animaux des champs:

Upon his trunk, shall settle down all the birds of the heavens, - And among his boughs, are to be found all the wild beasts of the field: —

14 afin qu'aucun arbre planté sur les eaux ne s'élève en hauteur et ne porte sa cime jusque dans les nues, et qu'aucun de ceux qui s'abreuvent d'eau ne s'appuie sur lui-même dans son orgueil. Car ils sont tous voués à la mort, aux profondeurs de la terre, mêlés aux enfants des hommes, à ceux qui descendent dans la fosse.

To the end that none of the trees of the waters— May exalt themselves in their stature or stretch their top among the clouds, Nor their mighty ones take their stand in their height- any that drink of the waters, — Because they all, are delivered to death Unto the earth below. In the midst of the sons of Adam. Amongst them who descend into the pit.

15 Ainsi parle le Seigneur Yahweh: Le jour où il descendit au schéol, j'ai fait mener le deuil; à cause de lui j'ai voilé l'abîme, j'ai retenu le cours de ses fleuves, et les grandes eaux se sont arrêtées; à cause de lui, j'ai assombri le Liban, et à cause de lui, tous les arbres des champs ont langui. Thus, saith My Lord Yahweh, In the day when he descended into hades, I caused a mourning. I covered over him the roaring deep, And restrained the currents thereof And stayed were the mighty waters, So caused I gloom over him unto Lebanon, And all the trees of the field for him were covered with a shroud. (Sheol h7585)

16 Au bruit de sa chute, j'ai fait trembler les nations, quand je l'ai fait descendre au schéol, avec ceux qui descendent dans la fosse. Ils se sont consolés dans les profondeurs de la terre, tous les arbres d'Eden, les plus beaux et les plus magnifiques du Liban, tous ceux que les eaux abreuvaient. (Sheol h7585)

At the sound of his fall, I made nations tremble, When I caused him to descend into hades, with them who descend into the pit, — Then were grieved in the earth below-All the trees of Eden, The choicest and best of Lebanon All who had drunk the waters. (Sheol h7585)

17 Ceux-là aussi sont descendus avec lui au schéol, vers les victimes de l'épée, qui étaient son bras et étaient assises à son ombre au milieu des nations. (Sheol h7585)

Even they, with him descended into hades. Among them who were thrust through with the sword, - Even his seed who dwelt in his shade in the midst of the nations. (Sheol h7585)

18 Ainsi à qui ressembles-tu en gloire et en grandeur, parmi les arbres d'Eden? Tu seras précipité avec les arbres d'Eden, dans les profondeurs de la terre, pour être couché au milieu d'incirconcis, avec ceux que l'épée a transpercés. Tel sera le sort de Pharaon et de toute sa multitude; — oracle du Seigneur Yahweh. "

Unto whom couldst thou be likened thus, in glory and in greatness, among the trees of Eden? Yet shalt thou be caused to descend with the trees of Eden into the earth below In the midst of the uncircumcised, shalt thou lie down With them who were thrust through by the sword, the same, is Pharaoh and all his multitude, Declareth My Lord Yahweh.
