Actes 24

1 Cinq jours après, arriva le grand prêtre Ananie, avec quelques Anciens et un certain rhéteur nommé Tertullus; ils portèrent plainte au gouverneur contre Paul.

And, after five days, came down the High-priest Ananias, with certain Elders and a certain orator Tertullus, and they informed the governor against Paul.

2 Celui-ci ayant été appelé, Tertullus se mit à l'accuser en ces termes: " Jouissant d'une paix profonde, grâce à toi, excellent Félix, et aux réformes que ta prévoyance a opérées en faveur de cette nation,

And, when he was called, Tertullus began to make accusation, saying—Seeing that, great peace, we are obtaining through thee, and that, reforms, are being brought about for this nation through thy forethought,

3 nous les accueillons toujours et partout avec une entière reconnaissance.

both in all ways and in all places, are we accepting it, most excellent Felix, with all thankfulness.

4 Mais, pour ne pas t'arrêter davantage, je te prie de nous écouter un moment avec ta bonté ordinaire.

But, lest I too long detain thee, I beseech thee to hear us concisely in thy considerateness.

5 Nous avons trouvé cet homme: c'est une peste, un homme qui excite des troubles parmi les Juifs dans le monde entier, un chef de la secte des Nazaréens,

For, finding this man a pest, and moving sedition with all the Jews that are throughout the inhabited earth, a leader also of the sect of the Nazarenes, —

6 et qui même a tenté de profaner le temple; aussi nous l'avons arrêté. [et nous voulions le juger selon notre loi.

who also attempted to desecrate even, the temple, whom we also seized,

7 Mais le tribun Lysias étant survenu, l'a arraché violemment de nos mains,

8 et il a ordonné que ses accusateurs vinssent devant toi]. Tu pourras toi-même, en l'interrogeant, apprendre de sa bouche tout ce dont nous l'accusons. "

from whom thou shall be able, thyself, by making examination concerning all these things, to ascertain the things of which, we, are accusing him.

9 Les Juifs se joignirent à cette accusation, soutenant que les choses étaient ainsi.

Moreover, the Jews also were joining in the attack, saying that, these things, were, so.

10 Après que le gouverneur lui eut fait signe de parler, Paul répondit: " C'est avec confiance que je prends la parole pour me justifier, car je sais que tu gouvernes cette nation depuis plusieurs années.

And Paul answered, when the governor had motioned him to be speaking, —Well knowing thee to have been, for many years, judge unto his nation, cheerfully, as to the things concerning myself, do I make defence;

11 Il n'y a pas plus de douze jours, tu peux t'en assurer, que je suis monté à Jérusalem pour adorer.

seeing thou art able to ascertain, that there are, not more, than twelve days, since I went up to worship in Jerusalem, —

12 Et l'on ne m'a pas vu dans le temple parler à quelqu'un, ni ameuter la foule, soit dans les synagogues,

and neither, in the temple, found they me, with any one, disputing, or causing, a halt, of the multitude, either in the synagogues or throughout the city, —

13 soit dans la ville; et ils ne sauraient prouver ce dont ils m'accusent maintenant.

neither can they make good the things concerning which they are, now, accusing me.

14 Je te confesse que je sers le Dieu de nos pères selon la religion qu'ils appellent une secte, croyant tout ce qui est écrit dans la Loi et les Prophètes,

But I confess, this, unto thee, —That, according to the Way which they call a Sect, so, I am rendering divine service unto my father’s God, believing in all the things which, throughout the law, and those which, in the prophets, are written:

15 et ayant en Dieu cette espérance, comme ils l'ont eux-mêmes, qu'il y aura une résurrection des justes et des pécheurs.

Having, hope, towards God, which, even these themselves, do entertain—that, a resurrection, there shall certainly be, both of righteous and of unrighteous:

16 C'est pourquoi moi aussi je m'efforce d'avoir constamment une conscience sans reproche devant Dieu et devant les hommes.

herein, even I, myself, am studying to have, an unoffending conscience, towards God and men, continually.

17 Je suis donc venu, après plusieurs années, pour faire des aumônes à mes compatriotes et pour présenter des oblations.

Now, after many years, intending to do, alms, unto my nation, I arrived, —also [to present] offerings; among which they found me, purified in the temple, not with a multitude, nor with tumult;

18 C'est alors que j'ai été trouvé dans le temple, après ma consécration, sans attroupement ni tumulte,

but certain Jews from Asia [caused it], —

19 par certains Juifs d'Asie; c'était à eux de paraître devant toi comme accusateurs, s'ils avaient quelque chose à me reprocher.

who ought, before thee, to have presented themselves, and to have been laying accusation, if, anything, they might have had against me: —

20 Ou bien que ceux-ci disent de quel crime ils m'ont trouvé coupable, lorsque j'ai comparu devant le Sanhédrin,

Or, let, these themselves, say what wrong they found, when I stood before the High-council, —

21 à moins qu'on me fasse un crime de cette seule parole que j'ai dite à haute voix devant eux: C'est à cause de la résurrection des morts que je suis aujourd'hui mis en jugement devant vous. "

unless concerning this one voice, wherewith I cried aloud among them, as I stood—Concerning the raising of the dead, am, I, to be judged, this day, by you.

22 Félix, qui connaissait bien cette religion les ajourna, en disant: " Quand le tribun Lysias sera venu je connaîtrai à fond votre affaire. "

And Felix deferred them, having more exact knowledge concerning the Way, —saying—As soon as, Lysias the captain, hath come down, I will give judgment as to your affairs, —

23 Et il donna l'ordre au centurion de garder Paul, mais en lui laissant quelque liberté, et sans empêcher aucun des siens de lui rendre des services.

giving orders unto the centurion, that he should be kept, and have a measure of liberty, and to be hindering, none, of his own from waiting upon him.

24 Quelques jours après, Félix vint avec Drusille, sa femme, qui était juive. Ayant fait appeler Paul, il l'entendit sur la foi en Jésus-Christ.

And, after certain days, Felix having arrived, with Drusilla his own wife, who was, a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith, respecting Christ Jesus.

25 Mais Paul en étant venu à parler de justice, de tempérance et de jugement à venir, Félix effrayé dit: " Pour le moment, retire-toi; je te rappellerai à la première occasion. "

And, as he was reasoning of righteousness, and self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix, becoming greatly afraid, answered—For the present, be going thy way, and, when I find an opportunity, I will send for thee, —

26 Il espérait en même temps que Paul lui donnerait de l'argent; aussi le faisait-il venir assez fréquemment pour s'entretenir avec lui.

at the same time, also hoping that, money, would be given him by Paul; wherefore also, the more frequently sending for him, he used to converse with him.

27 Deux ans s'écoulèrent ainsi, et Félix eut pour successeur Porcius Festus; et, dans le désir d'être agréable aux Juifs, il laissa Paul en prison.

When, however, two years, were completed, Felix, was succeeded, by Porcius Festus, and Felix, wishing to gain favour with the Jews, left Paul bound.
