1 Samuel 25
1 Cependant Samuel mourut et tout Israël s'assembla; on le pleura, et on l'enterra dans sa demeure, à Rama. Alors David se leva et descendit au désert de Pharan.
Now Samuel died. All Israel gathered together and mourned for him, and they buried him in his house at Ramah. Then David rose and went down to the wilderness of Paran.
2 Il y avait à Maon un homme ayant ses biens à Carmel; c'était un homme très riche, il avait trois mille brebis et mille chèvres, et il se trouvait à Carmel pour la tonte de ses brebis.
There was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel. The man was very wealthy. He had three thousand sheep and one thousand goats. He was shearing his sheep in Carmel.
3 Le nom de cet homme était Nabal, et le nom de sa femme Abigaïl. La femme était pleine de sens, et de belle figure; mais l'homme était dur et méchant en actes; il était de la race de Caleb.
The man's name was Nabal, and the name of his wife was Abigail. The woman was intelligent and beautiful in appearance. But the man was harsh and evil in his dealings. He was a descendant of the house of Caleb.
4 David apprit au désert que Nabal tondait ses brebis.
David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep.
5 David envoya dix jeunes gens, et David dit aux jeunes gens: « Montez à Carmel et allez trouver Nabal; vous le saluerez en mon nom,
So David sent ten young men. David said to the young men, “Go up to Carmel, go to Nabal, and greet him in my name.
6 et vous lui parlerez ainsi: Pour la vie! Que la paix soit avec toi, que la paix soit avec ta maison et que la paix soit avec tout ce qui t'appartient.
You will say to him, 'Live in prosperity. Peace to you and peace to your house, and peace be to all that you have.
7 Et maintenant, j'ai appris que tu as les tondeurs. Or, tes bergers ont été avec nous; nous ne leur avons causé aucune peine, et rien du troupeau ne leur a été enlevé pendant tout le temps qu'ils ont été à Carmel.
I hear that you have shearers. Your shepherds have been with us, and we did them no harm, and they missed nothing the whole time they were in Carmel.
8 Interroge tes serviteurs, et ils te le diront. Que les jeunes gens trouvent donc grâce à tes yeux, puisque nous venons dans un jour de joie. Donne, je te prie, à tes serviteurs et à ton fils David ce que ta main pourra trouver. »
Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Now let my young men find favor in your eyes, for we have come on a festive day. Please give whatever you have on hand to your servants and to your son David.'”
9 Lorsque les jeunes gens de David furent arrivés, ils répétèrent toutes ces paroles à Nabal au nom de David, et ils se reposèrent.
When David's young men arrived, they said all of this to Nabal on David's behalf and then waited.
10 Nabal répondit aux serviteurs de David et dit: « Qui est David, et qui est le fils d'Isaï? Ils sont nombreux aujourd'hui les serviteurs qui s'échappent de chez leurs maîtres.
Nabal answered David's servants, “Who is David, and who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants these days who are breaking away from their masters.
11 Et je prendrais mon pain et mon eau, et mon bétail que j'ai tué pour mes tondeurs, et je les donnerais à des gens qui viennent je ne sais d'où? »
Should I take my bread and my water and my meat that I have killed for my shearers, and give it to men who come from I do not know where?”
12 Les jeunes gens de David, rebroussant chemin, s'en retournèrent et, lorsqu'ils furent arrivés, ils lui redirent toutes ces paroles.
So David's young men turned away and came back, and told him everything that was said.
13 Alors David dit à ses hommes: « Que chacun de vous ceigne son épée! » Et ils ceignirent chacun leur épée, et David, lui aussi, ceignit son épée; environ quatre cents hommes montèrent à la suite de David; il en resta deux cents près des bagages.
David said to his men, “Every man strap on his sword.” So every man strapped on his sword. David also strapped on his sword. About four hundred men followed after David, and two hundred stayed by the baggage.
14 Un des serviteurs de Nabal vint apporter la nouvelle à Abigaïl en disant: « Voici que David a envoyé du désert des messagers pour saluer notre maître, qui s'est jeté sur eux.
But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife; he said, “David sent messengers out of the wilderness to greet our master, and he insulted them.
15 Et pourtant ces gens ont été bons pour nous; ils ne nous ont causé aucune peine, et rien ne nous a été enlevé tout le temps que nous avons cheminé avec eux, lorsque nous étions dans la campagne.
Yet the men were very good to us. We were not harmed and did not miss anything as long as we went with them when we were in the fields.
16 Ils nous ont servi de rempart, aussi bien la nuit que le jour, tout le temps que nous avons été avec eux, paissant les troupeaux.
They were a wall to us both day and night, all the while we were with them tending the sheep.
17 Reconnais maintenant et vois ce que tu as à faire; car le mal est résolu contre notre maître et contre toute sa maison; pour lui, c'est un fils de Bélial, et on ne peut lui parler. »
Therefore know this and consider what you will do, for evil is plotted against our master, and against his whole house. He is such a worthless fellow that one cannot reason with him.”
18 Aussitôt Abigaïl prit deux cents pains, deux outres de vin, cinq moutons apprêtés, cinq mesures de grain rôti, cent masses de raisin sec et deux cents de figues sèches et, les ayant mis sur des ânes,
Then Abigail hurried and took two hundred loaves, two bottles of wine, five sheep already prepared, five measures of parched grain, one hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on donkeys.
19 elle dit à ses jeunes gens: « Passez devant moi, je vous suis. » Mais elle ne dit rien à Nabal, son mari.
She said to her young men, “Go on before me, and I will come after you.” But she did not tell her husband Nabal.
20 Comme elle descendait, montée sur un âne, en un endroit couvert de la montagne, voici que David et ses hommes descendaient en face d'elle, et elle les rencontra. —
As she rode on her donkey and came down by the cover of the mountain, David and his men came down toward her, and she met them.
21 David disait: « C'est bien en vain que j'ai surveillé tout ce que cet homme a dans le désert, et que rien n'a été enlevé de tout ce qu'il possède; il me rend le mal pour le bien!
Now David had said, “Surely in vain have I guarded all that this man has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that belonged to him, and he has returned me evil for good.
22 Que Dieu traite dans toute sa rigueur les ennemis de David! De tout ce qui appartient à Nabal, je ne laisserai rien subsister jusqu'au lever du jour, pas même celui qui urine contre le mur. »
May God do so to me, David, and more also, if by the morning I leave so much as one male of all who belong to him.”
23 Dès qu'Abigaïl aperçut David, elle s'empressa de descendre de l'âne et, tombant sur sa face devant David, elle se prosterna contre terre.
When Abigail saw David, she hurried and got down from her donkey and lay before David facedown and bowed herself to the ground.
24 Puis elle se jeta à ses pieds, en disant: « Que sur moi, mon seigneur, sur moi soit la faute! Permets à ta servante de parler à tes oreilles, et écoute les paroles de ta servante!
She lay at his feet and said, “On me alone, my master, be the guilt. Please let your servant speak to you, and listen to the words of your servant.
25 Que mon seigneur ne prenne pas garde à cet homme de Bélial, à Nabal, car il est ce que son nom indique; son nom est Le Fou, et il y a chez lui de la folie. Mais moi, ta servante, je n'ai pas vu les gens de mon seigneur, que tu as envoyés.
Let not my master regard this worthless fellow, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. Nabal is his name, and folly is with him. But I your servant did not see the young men of my master, whom you sent.
26 Maintenant, mon seigneur, aussi vrai que Yahweh est vivant et que ton âme est vivante, Yahweh t'a préservé de répandre le sang et de te venger de ta main. Et maintenant, que tes ennemis et ceux qui veulent du mal à mon seigneur soient comme Nabal!
Now then, my master, as Yahweh lives, and as you live, since Yahweh has restrained you from bloodshed, and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now let your enemies, and those who seek to do evil to my master, be like Nabal.
27 Accepte donc ce présent que ta servante apporte à mon seigneur, et qu'il soit distribué aux jeunes gens qui marchent à la suite de mon seigneur.
Now let this present that your servant has brought to my master be given to the young men who follow my master.
28 Pardonne, je te prie, la faute de ta servante, car Yahweh fera certainement à mon seigneur une maison stable; car mon seigneur soutient les guerres de Yahweh, et on ne trouvera pas de mal en toi tout le temps de ta vie.
Please forgive the trespass of your servant, for Yahweh will certainly make my master a sure house, because my master is fighting the battles of Yahweh; and evil will not be found in you so long as you live.
29 S'il s'élève quelqu'un pour te poursuivre et en vouloir à ta vie, la vie de mon seigneur sera liée dans le faisceau des vivants auprès de Yahweh, ton Dieu, et la vie de tes ennemis, il la lancera au loin du creux de la fronde.
Though men rise up to pursue you to take your life, yet the life of my master will be bound in the bundle of the living by Yahweh your God; and he will sling away the lives of your enemies, as from the pocket of a sling.
30 Lorsque Yahweh aura fait à mon seigneur selon tout le bien qu'il a dit à ton sujet et qu'il t'aura établi chef sur Israël,
Yahweh will have done for my master everything he promised you, and has appointed you leader over Israel.
31 ce ne sera pas pour toi un sujet de remords ni pour mon seigneur une souffrance de cœur d'avoir répandu le sang sans motif et s'être vengé lui-même. Et lorsque Yahweh aura fait du bien à mon seigneur, souviens-toi de ta servante. »
This will not be a staggering burden for you—that you have poured out innocent blood, or because my master attempted to rescue himself. For when Yahweh will do good for my master, remember your servant.”
32 David dit à Abigaïl: « Béni soit Yahweh, le Dieu d'Israël, qui t'a envoyée, aujourd'hui à ma rencontre! Béni soit ton grand sens,
David said to Abigail, “May Yahweh, the God of Israel, be blessed, he who sent you to meet me today.
33 et bénie sois-tu, toi qui m'as empêché en ce jour de répandre le sang et de me venger de ma main!
Your wisdom is blessed and you are blessed, because you have kept me today from bloodshed and from avenging myself with my own hand!
34 Autrement, aussi vrai que Yahweh, le Dieu d'Israël, qui m'a empêché de te faire du mal, est vivant, si tu ne t'étais pas hâtée de venir au-devant de moi, il ne fût rien resté à Nabal d'ici au lever du jour, pas même celui qui urine contre le mur. »
For in truth, as Yahweh, the God of Israel, lives, he who has kept me from hurting you, unless you had hurried to come meet me, there would certainly have not been left to Nabal so much as one male baby by morning.”
35 David prit de la main d'Abigaïl ce qu'elle lui avait apporté, et lui dit: « Monte en paix dans ta maison; vois, j'ai écouté ta voix et relevé ton visage! »
So David received from her hand what she had brought him; he said to her, “Go up in peace to your house; see, I have listened to your voice and have accepted you.”
36 Abigaïl retourna vers Nabal, et voici qu'il faisait dans sa maison un festin comme un festin de roi; et le cœur de Nabal était joyeux, et il était complètement ivre. Elle ne lui apprit ni peu, ni beaucoup, jusqu'au lever du jour.
Abigail went back to Nabal; behold, he was holding a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk. So she told him nothing at all until the morning light.
37 Mais le matin, quand Nabal fut revenu de son ivresse, sa femme lui raconta ces choses, et son cœur en reçut un coup mortel, et il devint comme une pierre.
It came about in the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, that his wife told him these things; his heart died within him, and he became like a stone.
38 Environ dix jours après, Yahweh frappa Nabal, et il mourut.
It came about ten days later that Yahweh attacked Nabal so that he died.
39 Lorsque David apprit la mort de Nabal, il dit: « Béni soit Yahweh qui a défendu ma cause et m'a vengé de l'outrage que j'ai reçu de la main de Nabal, et qui a empêché son serviteur de faire le mal! Yahweh a fait retomber la méchanceté de Nabal sur sa tête. » Ensuite David envoya dire à Abigaïl qu'il voulait la prendre pour femme.
When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “May Yahweh be blessed, who has taken up the cause of my insult from the hand of Nabal and has kept back his servant from evil. He has turned Nabal's evil action back on his own head.” Then David sent and spoke to Abigail, to take her to himself as wife.
40 Arrivés chez Abigaïl à Carmel, les serviteurs de David lui parlèrent ainsi: « David nous a envoyés vers toi, afin de te prendre pour sa femme. »
When David's servants had come to Abigail at Carmel, they spoke to her and said, “David has sent us to you to take you to him as his wife.”
41 Elle se leva et, s'étant prosternée le visage contre terre, elle dit: « Voici que ta servante est comme une esclave pour laver les pieds des serviteurs de mon seigneur! »
She arose, bowed herself with her face to the ground, and said, “See, your female servant is a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my master.”
42 Aussitôt Abigaïl se leva et monta sur un âne, et cinq de ses jeunes filles allaient sur ses pas; elle suivit les messagers de David, et elle devint sa femme.
Abigail hurried and arose, and rode on a donkey with five servant girls of hers who followed her; and she followed David's messengers and became his wife.
43 David prit aussi Achinoam de Jezraël, et toutes les deux furent ses femmes.
Now David had also taken Ahinoam of Jezreel as a wife; both of them became his wives.
44 Mais Saül avait donné sa fille Michol, femme de David, à Phalti de Gallim, fils de Laïs.
Also, Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Paltiel son of Laish, who was of Gallim.
