Nahum 1
1 Oracle sur Ninive. Livre de la Vision de Nahum d’Elqosch.
The burden of Nineve: the book of the vision of Naum the Elkesite.
2 C’est un Dieu jaloux et vengeur que Yahweh; vengeur est Yahweh et connaissant le courroux; Yahweh se venge de ses adversaires, et garde rancune à ses ennemis.
God is jealous, and the Lord avenges; the Lord avenges with wrath; the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries, and he cuts off his enemies.
3 Yahweh est patient et grand en force, et il n’accorde pas l’impunité. Yahweh marche dans la tempête et dans l’ouragan, et la nuée est la poussière de ses pieds.
The Lord is long-suffering, and his power is great, and the Lord will not hold any guiltless: his way is in destruction and in the whirlwind, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
4 Il menace la mer et il la dessèche, et il fait tarir tous les fleuves. Basan et le Carmel sont flétris, flétrie est la végétation du Liban.
He threatens the sea, and dries it up, and exhausts all the rivers: the land of Basan, and Carmel are brought low, and the flourishing [trees] of Libanus have come to nought.
5 Les montagnes tremblent devant lui, et les collines se fondent; la terre se soulève devant sa face, le monde et tous ceux qui l’habitent.
The mountains quake at him, and the hills are shaken, and the earth recoils at his presence, [even] the world, and all that dwell in it.
6 Devant sa fureur qui subsistera, qui tiendra contre l’ardeur de sa colère? Son courroux se répand comme le feu, et les rochers se brisent devant lui.
Who shall stand before his anger? and who shall withstand in the anger of his wrath? his wrath brings to nought kingdoms, and the rocks are burst asunder by him.
7 Yahweh est bon; il est un refuge au jour de la détresse, et il connaît ceux qui se confient en lui.
The Lord is good to them that wait on him in the day of affliction; and he knows them that reverence him.
8 Par un flot débordant il détruira entièrement ce lieu, et il poursuivra ses ennemis jusque dans les ténèbres.
But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end: darkness shall pursue those that rise up against [him] and his enemies.
9 Quelles sont vos pensées sur Yahweh? Il consommera la ruine; la détresse ne surgira pas deux fois.
What do ye devise against the Lord? he will make a complete end: he will not take vengeance by affliction twice at the same time.
10 Car, entrelacés comme des épines, et comme ivres de leur vin, ils seront consumés comme de la paille toute sèche.
For [the enemy] shall be laid bare even to the foundation, and shall be devoured as twisted yew, and as stubble fully dry.
11 De toi est sorti celui qui médite le mal contre Yahweh, celui qui forme des desseins criminels.
Out of thee shall proceed a device against the Lord, counselling evil things hostile [to him].
12 Ainsi parte Yahweh: Bien qu’ils soient intacts et nombreux, ils seront moissonnés et disparaîtront. Je t’ai humiliée et je ne t’humilierai plus.
Thus saith the Lord who rules over many waters, Even thus shall they be sent away, and the report of thee shall not be heard any more.
13 Et maintenant, ô Juda, je briserai son joug de dessus toi, et je romprai tes liens.
And now will I break his rod from off thee, and will burst [thy] bonds.
14 Quant à toi, voici ce qu’a ordonné Yahweh: Il n’y aura plus de postérité de ton nom; je détruirai de la maison de ton Dieu les images taillées et celles de fonte; je prépare ton sépulcre, parce que tu as été léger.
And the Lord shall give a command concerning thee; there shall no more of thy name be scattered: I will utterly destroy the graven [images] out of the house of thy god, and the molten [images]: I will make thy grave; for [they are] swift.
15 Voici sur les montagnes les pieds d’un messager de bonnes nouvelles, qui annonce la paix. Célèbre tes fêtes, ô Juda, accomplis tes vœux! Car il ne passera plus chez toi; le méchant est entièrement détruit.
Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that brings glad tidings, and publishes peace! O Juda, keep thy feasts, pay thy vows: for they shall no more pass through thee to [thy] decay.
