Luc 14
1 Un jour de sabbat, Jésus étant entré dans la maison d’un des principaux Pharisiens pour y prendre son repas, ceux-ci l’observaient.
And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath, that they watched him.
2 Et voici qu’un homme hydropique se trouvait devant lui.
And behold, there was a certain man before him who had the dropsy.
3 Jésus, prenant la parole, dit aux Docteurs de la Loi et aux Pharisiens: « Est-il permis de faire une guérison le jour du sabbat? »
And Jesus answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath?
4 Et ils gardèrent le silence. Lui, prenant cet homme par la main, le guérit et le renvoya.
And they held their peace. And he took [him] and healed him, and let him go;
5 Puis, s’adressant à eux, il dit: « Qui de vous, si son âne ou son bœuf tombe dans un puits, ne l’en retire aussitôt le jour du sabbat? »
And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not forthwith pull him out on the sabbath?
6 Et à cela ils ne surent que lui répondre.
And they could not answer him again to these things.
7 Ensuite, ayant remarqué l’empressement des conviés à choisir les premières places, Jésus leur dit cette parabole:
And he put forth a parable to those who were invited, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying to them,
8 « Quand tu seras invité par quelqu’un à des noces, ne prends pas la première place, de peur qu’il n’y ait un homme plus considéré que toi,
When thou art invited by any [man] to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room, lest a more honorable man than thou be invited by him;
9 et que celui qui vous aura invités l’un et l’autre ne vienne te dire: Cède-lui la place; et qu’alors tu ne commences avec confusion à occuper la dernière place.
And he that invited thee and him, shall come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
10 Mais lorsque tu seras invité, va te mettre à la dernière place; de cette façon, quand viendra celui qui t’a invité, il te dira: on ami, monte plus haut. Alors ce sera pour toi un honneur devant les autres convives.
But when thou art invited, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that invited thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have honor in the presence of them that sit at table with thee.
11 Car quiconque s’élève sera abaissé, et quiconque s’abaisse sera élevé. »
For whoever exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
12 Il dit aussi à celui qui l’avait invité: « Lorsque tu donnes à dîner ou à souper, n’invite ni tes amis, ni tes frères, ni tes parents, ni des voisins riches, de peur qu’ils ne t’invitent à leur tour, et ne te rendent ce qu’ils auront reçu de toi.
Then said he also to him that invited him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor [thy] rich neighbors; lest they also invite thee again, and a recompense be made thee.
13 Mais, quand tu donnes un festin, invite des pauvres, des estropiés, des boiteux et des aveugles;
But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
14 et tu seras heureux de ce qu’ils ne peuvent te rendre la pareille, car cela te sera rendu à la résurrection des justes. »
And thou shalt be blessed: for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
15 Un de ceux qui étaient à table avec lui, ayant entendu ces paroles, dit à Jésus: « Heureux celui qui aura part au banquet dans le royaume de Dieu! »
And when one of them that sat at table with him heard these things, he said to him, Blessed [is] he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
16 Jésus lui dit: « Un homme donna un grand repas et y convia beaucoup de gens.
Then said he to him, A certain man made a great supper, and invited many:
17 A l’heure du repas, il envoya son serviteur dire aux invités: Venez, car tout est déjà prêt.
And sent his servant at supper-time, to say to them that were invited, Come, for all things are now ready.
18 Et tous, unanimement, se mirent à s’excuser. Le premier lui dit: J’ai acheté une terre, et il faut que j’aille la voir; je te prie de m’excuser.
And they all with one [consent] began to make excuse. The first said to him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
19 Le second dit: J’ai acheté cinq paires de bœufs, et je vais les essayer; je te prie de m’excuser.
And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.
20 Un autre dit: Je viens de me marier, et c’est pourquoi je ne puis aller.
And another said, I have married a wife: and therefore I cannot come.
21 Le serviteur étant revenu, rapporta ces choses à son maître. Alors le père de famille irrité dit à son serviteur: a vite dans les places et les rues de la ville, et amène ici les pauvres, les estropiés, les aveugles et les boiteux.
So that servant came, and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry, said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.
22 Le serviteur dit: Seigneur, il a été fait comme tu l’as commandé, et il y a encore de la place.
And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
23 Le maître dit au serviteur: a dans les chemins et le long des haies, et ceux que tu trouveras, presse-les d’entrer, afin que ma maison soit remplie.
And the lord said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel [them] to come in, that my house may be filled.
24 Car, je vous le dis, aucun de ces hommes qui avaient été invités ne goûtera de mon festin. »
For I say to you, that none of those men who were invited, shall taste my supper.
25 Comme une grande foule cheminait avec lui, il se retourna et leur dit:
And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said to them,
26 « Si quelqu’un vient à moi et ne hait pas son père et sa mère, sa femme et ses enfants, ses frères et ses sœurs, et même sa propre vie, il ne peut être mon disciple.
If any [man] cometh to me, and hateth not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
27 Et quiconque ne porte pas sa croix et ne me suis pas, ne peut être mon disciple.
And whoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
28 Qui de vous, en effet, s’il veut bâtir une tour, ne s’assied pas auparavant pour calculer la dépense, et s’il a de quoi l’achever?
For which of you intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he hath [sufficient] to finish [it]?
29 de peur qu’après avoir posé les fondements de l’édifice, il ne puisse le conduire à sa fin, et que tous ceux qui le verront ne se mettent à le railler,
Lest perhaps after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish [it], all that behold [it] begin to mock him,
30 disant: Cet homme a commencé à bâtir, et il n’a pu achever.
Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
31 Ou quel roi, s’il va faire la guerre à un autre roi, ne s’assied d’abord pour délibérer s’il peut, avec dix mille hommes, faire face à un ennemi qui vient l’attaquer avec vingt mille?
Or what king going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
32 S’il ne le peut, tandis que celui-ci est encore loin, il lui envoie une ambassade pour négocier la paix.
Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an embassy, and desireth conditions of peace.
33 Ainsi donc, quiconque d’entre vous ne renonce pas à tout ce qu’il possède, ne peut être mon disciple.
So likewise, whoever he is of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
34 Le sel est bon; mais si le sel s’affadit, avec quoi lui donnera-t-on de la saveur?
Salt [is] good: but if the salt hath lost its savor, with what shall it be seasoned?
35 Inutile et pour la terre et pour le fumier, on le jette dehors. Que celui qui a des oreilles entende bien! »
It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill, [but] men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
