Habacuc 1

1 Sentence dont Habaquq, le prophète, eut la vision.

The burden which Habakkuk the prophet saw.

2 Jusques à quand, Yahweh, t’implorerai-je, sans que tu m’entendes, crierai-je vers toi à la violence, sans que tu me délivres?

O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! [even] cry out to thee [of] violence, and thou wilt not save!

3 Pourquoi me fais-tu voir l’iniquité, et contemples-tu la souffrance? La dévastation et la violence sont devant moi, il y a des querelles et la discorde s’élève;

Why dost thou show me iniquity, and cause [me] to behold grievance? for devastation and violence [are] before me: and there are [that] raise strife and contention.

4 à cause de cela la loi se meurt, et la justice ne voit plus le jour; car le méchant circonvient le juste; c’est pourquoi le droit sort faussé.

Therefore the law is slackened, and judgment doth never go forth: for the wicked doth encompass the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceedeth.

5 Jetez les yeux sur les nations et regardez; soyez étonnés, stupéfaits. Car je vais faire en vos jours une œuvre, que vous ne croiriez pas si on vous la racontait.

Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvelously: for [I] will work a work in your days, [which] ye will not believe though it be told [you].

6 Car voici que je suscite les Chaldéens, peuple féroce et impétueux, qui s’avance vers les larges espaces de la terre, pour s’emparer de demeures qui ne sont pas à lui.

For lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, [that] bitter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwelling-places [that are] not theirs.

7 Il est terrible et formidable, et c’est de lui-même que vient son droit et sa grandeur.

They [are] terrible and dreadful: their judgment and their dignity shall proceed from themselves.

8 Ses chevaux sont plus légers que les léopards, plus ardents que les loups du soir. Ses cavaliers s’élancent, ses cavaliers viennent de loin, ils volent comme l’aigle pressé de dévorer.

Their horses also are swifter than the leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves: and their horsemen shall spread themselves, and their horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly as the eagle [that] hasteth to eat.

9 Tout ce peuple vient pour exercer la violence; leurs regards avides se portent en avant; il amasse les captifs comme du sable.

They shall come all for violence: their faces shall sup up [as] the east wind, and they shall gather the captivity as the sand.

10 Lui, il se moque des rois, et les princes sont sa risée; il se rit de toutes les forteresses, il entasse de la poussière et les prend.

And they shall scoff at the kings, and the princes shall be a scorn to them: they shall deride every strong hold; for they shall heap dust, and take it.

11 Puis l’ouragan s’avance et passe; et il se rend coupable; sa force à lui, voilà son Dieu!

Then shall [his] mind change, and he shall pass over, and offend, [imputing] this his power to his god.

12 N’es-tu pas dès le commencement, Yahweh, mon Dieu, mon saint? Nous ne mourrons pas. Yahweh, tu as établi ce peuple pour le droit, ô mon Rocher, tu l’as affermi pour châtier.

[Art] thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, my Holy One? We shall not die. O LORD, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction.

13 Tes yeux sont trop purs pour voir le mal, et tu ne peux contempler la souffrance. Pourquoi regarderais-tu les perfides, et te tairais-tu, quand le méchant dévore un plus juste que lui?

[Thou art] of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: why lookest thou on them that deal treacherously, [and] keepest silence when the wicked devoureth [the man that is] more righteous than he?

14 Tu traiterais donc les hommes comme les poissons de la mer, comme les reptiles qui n’ont pas de chef!...

And makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping animals [that have] no ruler over them?

15 Il prend le tout à l’hameçon, il le tire avec son filet, le rassemble dans ses rets; et c’est pourquoi il est dans la joie, il jubile.

They take up all of them with the angle, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their drag: therefore they rejoice and are glad.

16 C’est pourquoi il sacrifie à son filet, et il offre de l’encens à ses rets; car par eux sa portion est grasse, et sa nourriture succulente.

Therefore they sacrifice to their net, and burn incense to their drag; because by them their portion [is] fat, and their food plenteous.

17 Continuera-t-il donc de vider son filet, et toujours égorgera-t-il sans pitié les nations!

Shall they therefore empty their net, and not spare continually to slay the nations?
