Luc 14
1 Comme il entrait dans la maison d'un des chefs des pharisiens, un jour de sabbat, pour manger du pain, ils l'observaient.
And it came to pass, when Jesus went into the house of one of the chief of the Pharisees, on the sabbath day, to eat bread, that they watched him.
2 Et voici qu'un homme atteint d'hydropisie était en face de lui.
And behold, there was a certain man before him that had the dropsy.
3 Jésus, prenant la parole, s'adressa aux juristes et aux pharisiens, et dit: « Est-il permis de guérir le jour du sabbat? »
And Jesus answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying: Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?
4 Mais ils se sont tus. Il le prit, le guérit, et le laissa partir.
But they held their peace. But he taking him, healed him, and sent him away.
5 Il leur répondit: « Lequel d'entre vous, si son fils ou son bœuf tombait dans un puits, ne le retirerait pas immédiatement un jour de sabbat? »
And answering them, he said: Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fall into a pit, and will not immediately draw him out, on the sabbath day?
6 Ils ne purent lui répondre sur ces choses.
And they could not answer him to these things.
7 Il adressa une parabole aux invités, en remarquant qu'ils choisissaient les meilleures places, et il leur dit:
And he spoke a parable also to them that were invited, marking how they chose the first seats at the table, saying to them:
8 « Lorsque quelqu'un vous invite à des noces, ne vous asseyez pas à la meilleure place, car il se peut que quelqu'un de plus honorable que vous soit invité par lui,
When thou art invited to a wedding, sit not down in the first place, lest perhaps one more honourable than thou be invited by him:
9 et que celui qui vous a invités tous les deux vienne vous dire: « Faites place à cette personne ». Alors tu commencerais, avec honte, à prendre la place la plus basse.
And he that invited thee and him, come and say to thee, Give this man place: and then thou begin with shame to take the lowest place.
10 Mais quand tu es invité, va t'asseoir à la place la plus basse, afin que celui qui t'a invité vienne te dire: « Mon ami, monte plus haut ». Alors tu seras honoré en présence de tous ceux qui seront à table avec toi.
But when thou art invited, go, sit down in the lowest place; that when he who invited thee, cometh, he may say to thee: Friend, go up higher. Then shalt thou have glory before them that sit at table with thee.
11 Car quiconque s'élève sera abaissé, et quiconque s'abaisse sera élevé. »
Because every one that exalteth himself, shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted.
12 Il dit aussi à celui qui l'avait invité: « Quand tu prépares un dîner ou un souper, n'appelle pas tes amis, ni tes frères, ni tes parents, ni de riches voisins, car ils pourraient aussi te rendre la pareille et te payer.
And he said to him also that had invited him: When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen, nor thy neighbours who are rich; lest perhaps they also invite thee again, and a recompense be made to thee.
13 Mais quand tu fais un festin, demande aux pauvres, aux estropiés, aux boiteux ou aux aveugles;
But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind;
14 et tu seras béni, car ils n'ont pas les moyens de te rembourser. Car vous serez remboursés à la résurrection des justes. »
And thou shalt be blessed, because they have not wherewith to make thee recompense: for recompense shall be made thee at the resurrection of the just.
15 Lorsqu'un de ceux qui étaient à table avec lui entendit ces choses, il lui dit: « Heureux celui qui fera un festin dans le Royaume de Dieu! »
When one of them that sat at table with him, had heard these things, he said to him: Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
16 Mais il lui dit: « Un homme a fait un grand souper, et il a invité beaucoup de gens.
But he said to him: A certain man made a great supper, and invited many.
17 À l'heure du repas, il envoya son serviteur dire aux convives: « Venez, car tout est prêt maintenant.
And he sent his servant at the hour of supper to say to them that were invited, that they should come, for now all things are ready.
18 Tous, comme un seul homme, se mirent à s'excuser. Le premier lui dit: « J'ai acheté un champ, et je dois aller le voir. Je vous prie de m'excuser.
And they began all at once to make excuse. The first said to him: I have bought a farm, and I must needs go out and see it: I pray thee, hold me excused.
19 Un autre dit: « J'ai acheté cinq paires de bœufs, et je dois aller les essayer. Je vous prie de m'excuser.
And another said: I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to try them: I pray thee, hold me excused.
20 Un autre dit: « J'ai épousé une femme, et je ne peux donc pas venir.
And another said: I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
21 « Ce serviteur vint, et raconta ces choses à son maître. Le maître de maison, irrité, dit à son serviteur: « Va vite dans les rues et les ruelles de la ville, et amène les pauvres, les estropiés, les aveugles et les boiteux.
And the servant returning, told these things to his lord. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant: Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the feeble, and the blind, and the lame.
22 « Le serviteur dit: « Seigneur, c'est fait comme tu l'as ordonné, et il y a encore de la place ».
And the servant said: Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
23 Le maître dit au serviteur: « Va sur les routes et dans les haies, et oblige-les à entrer, afin que ma maison soit remplie.
And the Lord said to the servant: Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
24 Car je te dis qu'aucun de ces hommes qui ont été invités ne goûtera à mon souper.'"
But I say unto you, that none of those men that were invited, shall taste of my supper.
25 Or, une grande foule allait avec lui. Il se tourna vers eux et leur dit:
And there went great multitudes with him. And turning, he said to them:
26 « Si quelqu'un vient à moi et ne fait pas abstraction de son père, de sa mère, de sa femme, de ses enfants, de ses frères et de ses sœurs, et même de sa propre vie, il ne peut être mon disciple.
If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
27 Celui qui ne porte pas sa propre croix et ne me suit pas, ne peut pas être mon disciple.
And whosoever doth not carry his cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
28 En effet, lequel d'entre vous, s'il veut construire une tour, ne s'assied d'abord pour en calculer le coût, afin de voir s'il a de quoi l'achever?
For which of you having a mind to build a tower, doth not first sit down, and reckon the charges that are necessary, whether he have wherewithal to finish it:
29 Ou bien, lorsqu'il a posé le fondement et qu'il ne peut pas terminer, tous ceux qui le voient commencent à se moquer de lui,
Lest, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that see it begin to mock him,
30 en disant: « Cet homme a commencé à bâtir et n'a pas pu terminer ».
Saying: This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
31 Ou quel roi, lorsqu'il va à la rencontre d'un autre roi dans une guerre, ne s'assied pas d'abord pour examiner s'il est capable, avec dix mille hommes, de rencontrer celui qui vient contre lui avec vingt mille hommes?
Or what king, about to go to make war against another king, doth not first sit down, and think whether he be able, with ten thousand, to meet him that, with twenty thousand, cometh against him?
32 Ou bien, alors que l'autre est encore loin, il envoie un émissaire et demande des conditions de paix.
Or else, whilst the other is yet afar off, sending an embassy, he desireth conditions of peace.
33 Ainsi donc, celui d'entre vous qui ne renonce pas à tout ce qu'il possède, ne peut être mon disciple.
So likewise every one of you that doth not renounce all that he possesseth, cannot be my disciple.
34 « Le sel est bon, mais si le sel devient plat et sans saveur, avec quoi l'assaisonnez-vous?
Salt is good. But if the salt shall lose its savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?
35 Il n'est bon ni pour la terre ni pour le tas de fumier. On le jette dehors. Que celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre, entende. »
It is neither profitable for the land nor for the dunghill, but shall be cast out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
