Juges 14
1 Samson descendit à Thimna, et il vit à Thimna une femme d'entre les filles des Philistins.
Samson went down to Timnah, and there he saw a woman, one of the daughters of the Philistines.
2 Il remonta, et le rapporta à son père et à sa mère, en disant: « J'ai vu à Thimna une femme d'entre les filles des Philistins. Maintenant, prends-la pour moi comme femme. »
When he returned, he told his father and mother, “I saw a woman in Timnah, one of the daughters of the Philistines. Now get her for me to be my wife.”
3 Et son père et sa mère lui dirent: « N'y a-t-il pas une femme parmi les filles de tes frères, ou parmi tout mon peuple, que tu ailles prendre une femme chez les Philistins incirconcis? » Samson dit à son père: « Prends-la pour moi, car elle me plaît bien. »
His father and mother said to him, “Is there not a woman among the daughters of your relatives, or among all our people? Are you going to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?” Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, for when I look at her, she pleases me.”
4 Mais son père et sa mère ne savaient pas que c'était de la part de l'Éternel, car il cherchait une occasion de se battre contre les Philistins. Or, en ce temps-là, les Philistins dominaient sur Israël.
But his father and his mother did not know that this matter came from Yahweh, for he desired to create a conflict with the Philistines (for at that time the Philistines were ruling Israel).
5 Alors Samson descendit à Thimna avec son père et sa mère, et il arriva dans les vignes de Thimna; et voici qu'un jeune lion rugit contre lui.
Then Samson went down to Timnah with his father and his mother, and they came to the vineyards of Timnah. And, look, there one of the young lions came up and was roaring at him.
6 L'Esprit de Yahvé vint puissamment sur lui, et il le déchira comme il aurait déchiré un chevreau à mains nues, mais il ne dit pas à son père ni à sa mère ce qu'il avait fait.
Yahweh's Spirit suddenly came on him, and he tore the lion apart as easily as he would have torn apart a small goat, and he had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.
7 Il descendit et parla avec la femme, et elle plut à Samson.
He went and spoke with the woman, and when he looked at her, she pleased Samson.
8 Au bout d'un moment, il revint la chercher, et il alla voir le cadavre du lion; et voici, il y avait un essaim d'abeilles dans le cadavre du lion, et du miel.
A few days later when he returned to marry her, he turned aside to look for the carcass of the lion. And, look, there was a swarm of bees and honey in what was left of the lion's body.
9 Il le prit dans ses mains, et s'en alla, mangeant en chemin. Il vint vers son père et sa mère et leur donna, et ils mangèrent, mais il ne leur dit pas qu'il avait pris le miel dans le corps du lion.
He scraped up the honey in his hands and went on, eating as he went. When he came to his father and his mother, he gave some to them, and they ate. But he did not tell them he had taken the honey out of what was left of the lion's body.
10 Son père descendit chez la femme, et Samson y fit un festin, car les jeunes gens ont l'habitude de le faire.
Samson's father went down to where the woman was, and Samson gave a feast there, for this was the custom of the young men.
11 Quand ils le virent, ils amenèrent trente compagnons pour être avec lui.
As soon as her relatives saw him, they brought him thirty of their friends to be with him.
12 Samson leur dit: « Je vais vous poser une énigme. Si vous pouvez me donner la réponse dans les sept jours de la fête et la découvrir, alors je vous donnerai trente vêtements de lin et trente vêtements de rechange;
Samson said to them, “Let me now tell you a riddle. If one of you can find it out and tell me the answer during the seven days of the feast, I will give out thirty linen robes and thirty sets of clothes.
13 mais si vous ne pouvez pas me donner la réponse, alors vous me donnerez trente vêtements de lin et trente vêtements de rechange. » Ils lui dirent: « Dis-nous ton énigme, afin que nous l'entendions. »
But if you cannot tell me the answer, then you will give me thirty linen robes and thirty sets of clothes.” They said to him, “Tell us your riddle, so we may hear it.”
14 Il leur dit, « Du mangeur est sortie la nourriture. De la force est sortie la douceur. » En trois jours, ils n'ont pas pu résoudre l'énigme.
He said to them, “Out of the eater was something to eat; out of the strong was something sweet.” But his guests could not find the answer in three days.
15 Le septième jour, ils dirent à la femme de Samson: « Attire ton mari pour qu'il nous révèle l'énigme, de peur que nous ne te brûlions, toi et la maison de ton père. Nous avez-vous appelés pour nous appauvrir? N'est-ce pas? »
On the fourth day they said to Samson's wife, “Trick your husband so that he may tell us the answer to the riddle, or we will burn up you and your father's house. Did you invite us here in order to make us poor?”
16 La femme de Samson pleura devant lui et dit: « Tu me hais et tu ne m'aimes pas. Tu as raconté une énigme aux enfants de mon peuple, et tu ne l'as pas racontée à moi. » Il lui dit: « Voici, je ne l'ai dit ni à mon père ni à ma mère, alors pourquoi devrais-je te le dire? ».
Samson's wife started to weep in front of him; she said, “All you do is hate me! You do not love me. You have told a riddle to some of my people, but you have not told me the answer.” Samson said to her, “Look here, if I have not told my father or my mother, should I tell you?”
17 Elle pleura devant lui les sept jours que dura leur fête; et le septième jour, il le lui dit, car elle le pressait durement; et elle raconta l'énigme aux enfants de son peuple.
She cried during the seven days that their feast lasted. On the seventh day he told her the answer because she pressured him very much. She told the answer to the relatives of her people.
18 Le septième jour, avant le coucher du soleil, les hommes de la ville lui dirent: « Qu'est-ce qui est plus doux que le miel? Qu'est-ce qui est plus fort qu'un lion? » Il leur a dit, « Si tu n'avais pas labouré avec ma génisse, vous n'auriez pas découvert mon énigme. »
Before the sun went down on the seventh day the men of the city said to him, “What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?” Samson said to them, “If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have found the answer to my riddle.”
19 L'Esprit de Yahvé se manifesta puissamment sur lui, il descendit à Ashkelon et en frappa trente hommes. Il prit leur butin, puis donna les vêtements de rechange à ceux qui avaient déclaré l'énigme. Sa colère s'enflamma, et il monta à la maison de son père.
Then Yahweh's Spirit suddenly came on Samson with power. Samson went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of their men. He took their plunder, and he gave their clothes to those who had explained the riddle. Burning with anger, he went up to his father's house.
20 Mais la femme de Samson fut donnée à son compagnon, qui avait été son ami.
Samson's wife was given to his best friend.
