Job 39

1 « Connaissez-vous le moment où les chèvres de montagne mettent bas? Tu regardes quand la biche porte des faons?

[Say] if you know the time of the bringing forth of the wild goats of the rock, and [if] you have marked the calving of the hinds:

2 Pouvez-vous compter les mois qu'ils remplissent? Ou connaissez-vous l'heure à laquelle elles accouchent?

and [if] you has have numbered the full months of their being with young, and [if] you have relieved their pangs:

3 Ils se courbent. Ils portent leurs petits. Ils mettent fin à leurs douleurs d'accouchement.

and have reared their young without fear; and will you loosen their pangs?

4 Leurs petits deviennent forts. Ils grandissent en plein air. Ils sortent, et ne reviennent plus.

Their young will break forth; they will be multiplied with offspring: [their young] will go forth, and will not return to them.

5 « Qui a libéré l'âne sauvage? Ou qui a détaché les liens de l'âne véloce,

And who is he that sent forth the wild ass free? and who loosed his bands?

6 dont j'ai fait du désert la demeure, et la terre salée sa demeure?

whereas I made his habitation the wilderness, and the salt land his coverts.

7 Il se moque du tumulte de la ville, Il n'entend pas non plus les cris du conducteur.

He laughs to scorn the multitude of the city, and hears not the chiding of the tax-gatherer.

8 La chaîne des montagnes est son pâturage. Il cherche toutes les choses vertes.

He will survey the mountains [as] his pasture, and he seeks after every green thing.

9 « Le bœuf sauvage se contentera-t-il de te servir? Ou restera-t-il près de votre mangeoire?

And will the unicorn be willing to serve you, or to lie down at your manger?

10 Pouvez-vous retenir le bœuf sauvage dans le sillon avec son harnais? Ou va-t-il labourer les vallées après vous?

And will you bind his yoke with thongs, or will he plow furrows for you in the plain?

11 Auras-tu confiance en lui, car sa force est grande? Ou lui laisserez-vous votre travail?

And do you trust him, because his strength is great? and will you commit your works to him?

12 Tu te confies en lui, pour qu'il ramène ta postérité, et ramasser le grain de votre aire de battage?

And will you believe that he will return to you your seed, and bring [it] in [to] your threshing floor?

13 « Les ailes de l'autruche ondulent fièrement, mais sont-ils les plumes et le plumage de l'amour?

The peacock has a beautiful wing: if the stork and the ostrich conceive, [it is worthy of notice],

14 Car elle laisse ses œufs sur la terre, les réchauffe dans la poussière,

for [the ostrich] will leave her eggs in the ground, and warm them on the dust,

15 et oublie que le pied peut les écraser, ou que l'animal sauvage les piétine.

and has forgotten that the foot will scatter them, and the wild beasts of the field trample them.

16 Elle traite durement ses petits, comme s'ils n'étaient pas à elle. Bien que son travail soit vain, elle est sans crainte,

She has hardened [herself] against her young ones, as though [she bereaved] not herself: she labors in vain without fear.

17 parce que Dieu l'a privée de sagesse, Il ne lui a pas non plus transmis l'intelligence.

For God has withholden wisdom from her, and not given her a portion in understanding.

18 Quand elle s'élève dans les hauteurs, elle méprise le cheval et son cavalier.

In her season she will lift herself on high; she will scorn the horse and his rider.

19 « Avez-vous donné de la force au cheval? Avez-vous revêtu son cou d'une crinière frémissante?

Hast you invested the horse with strength, and clothed his neck with terror?

20 L'avez-vous fait bondir comme une sauterelle? La gloire de son reniflement est impressionnante.

And have you clad him in perfect armor, and made his breast glorious with courage?

21 Il patauge dans la vallée, et se réjouit dans sa force. Il part à la rencontre des hommes armés.

He paws exulting in the plain, and goes forth in strength into the plain.

22 Il se moque de la peur, et ne se laisse pas abattre, il ne recule pas non plus devant l'épée.

He laughs to scorn a king as he meets him, and will by no means turn back from the sword.

23 Le carquois s'agite contre lui, la lance étincelante et le javelot.

The bow and sword resound against him; and [his] rage will swallow up the ground:

24 Il dévore le sol avec férocité et rage, il ne s'arrête pas non plus au son de la trompette.

and he will not believe until the trumpet sounds.

25 Chaque fois que la trompette sonne, il grogne: « Ah! ». Il sent la bataille de loin, le tonnerre des capitaines, et les cris.

And when the trumpet sounds, he says, Aha! and afar off he smells the war with prancing and neighing.

26 « C'est par ta sagesse que le faucon s'envole, et déploie ses ailes vers le sud?

And does the hawk remain steady by your wisdom, having spread out her wings unmoved, looking toward the region of the south?

27 C'est sur ton ordre que l'aigle s'élève, et fait son nid en haut?

And does the eagle rise at your command, and the vulture remain sitting over his nest,

28 Sur la falaise, il habite et fait sa demeure, à la pointe de la falaise et de la forteresse.

on a crag of a rock, and in a secret [place]?

29 De là, il repère la proie. Ses yeux la voient de loin.

Thence he seeks food, his eyes observe from far.

30 Ses petits sucent aussi le sang. Là où sont les morts, il est là. »

And his young ones roll themselves in blood, and wherever the carcasses may be, immediately they are found.
