1 Samuel 20
1 David s'enfuit de Naïoth à Rama, et vint dire à Jonathan: Qu'ai-je fait? Quelle est mon iniquité? Quel est mon péché devant ton père, pour qu'il en veuille à ma vie? »
Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah and came and said to Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my iniquity? What is my sin before your father, that he seeks to take my life?”
2 Il lui dit: « Loin de là, tu ne mourras pas. Voici que mon père ne fait rien, ni grand ni petit, sans qu'il me le révèle. Pourquoi mon père me cacherait-il cette chose? Ce n'est pas ainsi. »
Jonathan said to David, “Far from it; you will not die. My father does nothing either great or small without telling it to me. Why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so.”
3 David jura en outre et dit: « Ton père sait bien que j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, et il dit: « Ne le fais pas savoir à Jonathan, de peur qu'il ne s'afflige »; mais en vérité, aussi vrai que Yahvé est vivant et que ton âme est vivante, il n'y a qu'un pas entre moi et la mort. »
Yet David vowed again and said, “Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes. He has said, 'Do not let Jonathan know this, or he will be grieved.' But as truly as Yahweh lives, and as you live, there is but a step between me and death.”
4 Et Jonathan dit à David: « Tout ce que ton âme désire, je le ferai pour toi. »
Then Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you say, I will do for you.”
5 David dit à Jonathan: « Voici, demain c'est la nouvelle lune, et je ne dois pas manquer de dîner avec le roi; mais laisse-moi partir, et je me cacherai dans les champs jusqu'au troisième jour au soir.
David said to Jonathan, “Tomorrow is the new moon, and I ought to sit down to eat with the king. But let me go, so that I may hide myself in the field until the third day at evening.
6 Si je manque à ton père, dis-lui: « David m'a demandé congé pour aller à Bethléem, sa ville, car c'est là qu'a lieu le sacrifice annuel pour toute la famille ».
If your father misses me at all, then say, 'David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city; because it is the yearly sacrifice there for all the clan.'
7 S'il dit: « C'est bien », ton serviteur aura la paix; mais s'il se met en colère, sache que c'est lui qui a décidé du mal.
If he says, 'It is well,' your servant will have peace. But if he is very angry, then know that he has decided on evil.
8 C'est pourquoi, traite ton serviteur avec bonté, car tu l'as fait entrer dans une alliance de l'Éternel avec toi; mais s'il y a de l'iniquité en moi, tue-moi toi-même, car pourquoi m'amener à ton père? ».
Therefore deal kindly with your servant. For you have brought your servant into a covenant of Yahweh with you. But if there is sin in me, kill me yourself; for why then should you bring me to your father?”
9 Jonathan dit: « Loin de toi l'idée; car si je devais savoir que le mal était déterminé par mon père à venir sur toi, ne te le dirais-je pas? »
Jonathan said, “Far be it from you! If I learned my father decided harm to come upon you, would I not tell you?”
10 David dit alors à Jonathan: « Qui me dira si ton père te répond durement? »
Then David said to Jonathan, “Who will tell me if by chance your father should answer you roughly?”
11 Jonathan dit à David: « Viens! Allons dans les champs. » Ils sortirent tous deux dans les champs.
Jonathan said to David, “Come, let us go out into the field.” So they both went out into the field.
12 Jonathan dit à David: « Par l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël, quand j'aurai sondé mon père, demain à cette heure-ci, ou le troisième jour, voici, s'il y a du bien envers David, n'enverrai-je pas vers toi pour te l'annoncer?
Jonathan said to David, “May Yahweh, the God of Israel, be witness. When I have questioned my father around this time tomorrow, or the third day, see, if there is good will toward David, will I not then send to you and make it known to you?
13 Que l'Éternel fasse de même pour Jonathan et pour d'autres, si mon père veut vous faire du mal, si je ne vous l'annonce pas et ne vous renvoie pas, afin que vous partiez en paix. Que Yahvé soit avec vous comme il a été avec mon père.
If it pleases my father to do you harm, may Yahweh do to Jonathan and more also if I do not make it known to you and send you away, so that you may go in peace. May Yahweh be with you, as he has been with my father.
14 Non seulement tu me montreras la bonté de Yahvé tant que je vivrai encore, afin que je ne meure pas;
If I am still alive, will you not show me the covenant faithfulness of Yahweh, that I may not die?
15 mais encore tu ne retrancheras pas ta bonté de ma maison pour toujours, non, pas quand Yahvé aura exterminé de la surface de la terre tous les ennemis de David. »
Do not cut off your covenant faithfulness from my house forever—not even when Yahweh cuts off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth.”
16 Jonathan fit donc une alliance avec la maison de David, en disant: « Yahvé la réclamera de la main des ennemis de David. »
So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David and said, “May Yahweh require an accounting from the hand of the enemies of David.”
17 Jonathan fit encore jurer David, à cause de l'amour qu'il avait pour lui, car il l'aimait comme il aimait sa propre âme.
Jonathan made David vow again because of the love that he had for him, because he loved him as he loved his own soul.
18 Jonathan lui dit alors: « Demain, c'est la nouvelle lune, et tu manqueras, car ta place sera vide.
Then Jonathan said to him, “Tomorrow is the new moon. You will be missed because your seat will be empty.
19 Quand tu seras resté trois jours, descends vite et viens à l'endroit où tu t'es caché quand tout cela a commencé, et reste près de la pierre Ezel.
When you have stayed three days, go down quickly and come to the place where you hid yourself when the business was in hand, and stay by the stone Ezel.
20 Je tirerai trois flèches sur son côté, comme si je tirais sur une marque.
I will shoot three arrows to the side of it, as though I were shooting at a target.
21 Voici que j'enverrai le garçon en disant: « Va chercher les flèches ». Si je dis au garçon: « Voici, les flèches sont de ce côté-ci de toi. Si je dis au garçon: « Voici, les flèches sont de ce côté-ci de toi, prends-les », alors viens, car tu auras la paix et aucun danger, car l'Éternel est vivant.
Then I will send my young man and say to him, 'Go find the arrows.' If I say to the young boy, 'Look, the arrows are on this side of you; get them,” then come; for there will be safety for you and not harm, as Yahweh lives.
22 Mais si je dis au garçon: « Voici, les flèches sont au-delà de toi », alors va-t'en, car l'Éternel te renvoie.
“But if I say to the young man, 'Look, the arrows are beyond you,' then go your way, for Yahweh has sent you away.
23 Quant à l'affaire dont nous avons parlé, toi et moi, voici que l'Éternel est entre toi et moi pour toujours. »
As for the agreement of which you and I have spoken, see, Yahweh is between you and me forever.'”
24 David se cacha donc dans les champs. Lorsque la nouvelle lune fut venue, le roi s'assit pour manger.
So David hid himself in the field. When the new moon came, the king sat down to eat food.
25 Le roi s'assit sur son siège, comme les autres fois, même sur le siège près du mur; Jonathan se leva, et Abner s'assit aux côtés de Saül, mais la place de David était vide.
The king sat on his seat, as usual, on the seat by the wall. Jonathan stood up, and Abner sat by Saul's side. But David's place was empty.
26 Saül ne dit rien ce jour-là, car il pensait: « Il lui est arrivé quelque chose. Il n'est pas pur. Il n'est certainement pas pur. »
Yet Saul did not say anything that day, because he thought, “Something has happened to him. He is not clean; surely he is not clean.”
27 Le lendemain de la nouvelle lune, le deuxième jour, la place de David était vide. Saül dit à Jonathan, son fils: « Pourquoi le fils de Jessé n'est-il pas venu manger, ni hier, ni aujourd'hui? »
But on the second day, the day after the new moon, David's place was empty. Saul said to Jonathan his son, “Why has the son of Jesse not come to the meal either yesterday or today?”
28 Jonathan répondit à Saül: « David m'a demandé avec insistance la permission d'aller à Bethléem.
Jonathan answered Saul, “David earnestly asked permission from me to go to Bethlehem.
29 Il a dit: « Laisse-moi y aller, car notre famille offre un sacrifice dans la ville. Mon frère m'a ordonné de m'y rendre. Maintenant, si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, permets-moi de m'en aller voir mes frères ». C'est pourquoi il n'est pas venu à la table du roi. »
He said, 'Please let me go. For our family has a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has ordered me to be there. Now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me go and see my brothers.' For this reason he has not come to the king's table.”
30 Alors la colère de Saül s'enflamma contre Jonathan, et il lui dit: « Fils d'une femme perverse et rebelle, ne sais-je pas que tu as choisi le fils d'Isaï à ta propre honte et à la honte de la nudité de ta mère?
Then Saul's anger burned against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother's nakedness?
31 Car tant que le fils d'Isaï vivra sur la terre, tu ne seras pas établi, ni ton royaume. C'est pourquoi, maintenant, envoie-le et amène-le-moi, car il va mourir! ».
For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, neither you nor your kingdom will be established. Now then, send and bring him to me, for he must surely die.”
32 Jonathan répondit à Saül, son père, et lui dit: « Pourquoi faut-il le mettre à mort? Qu'a-t-il fait? »
Jonathan answered Saul his father, “For what reason should he be put to death? What has he done?”
33 Saül lança sa lance contre lui pour le frapper. Jonathan sut alors que son père était décidé à faire mourir David.
Then Saul threw his spear at him to kill him. So Jonathan knew that his father was determined to put David to death.
34 Jonathan se leva de table avec une grande colère, et il ne mangea rien le second jour du mois, car il était affligé par David, que son père avait maltraité.
Jonathan got up from the table in fierce anger and ate no food the second day of the month, for he was grieved over David, because his father had dishonored him.
35 Le matin, Jonathan sortit dans les champs à l'heure dite avec David, et un petit garçon avec lui.
In the morning, Jonathan went out into the field to the appointment with David, and a young man was with him.
36 Il dit à son garçon: « Cours, trouve maintenant les flèches que je tire. » Comme le garçon courait, il tira une flèche au-delà de lui.
He said to his young man, “Run and find the arrows that I shoot.” As the young man ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.
37 Lorsque le garçon fut arrivé à la place de la flèche que Jonathan avait tirée, Jonathan cria après le garçon et dit: « La flèche n'est-elle pas au-delà de toi? ».
When the young man came to the place where the arrow that Jonathan shot had landed, Jonathan called after the young man, and said, “Is not the arrow beyond you?”
38 Jonathan cria après le garçon: « Va vite! Dépêche-toi. Ne tarde pas. » Le garçon de Jonathan ramassa les flèches et vint auprès de son maître.
Then Jonathan called after the young man, “Hurry, be quick, do not stay!” So Jonathan's young man gathered up the arrows and came to his master.
39 Mais le garçon ne savait rien. Seuls Jonathan et David connaissaient l'affaire.
But the young man did not know anything. Only Jonathan and David knew the matter.
40 Jonathan donna les armes à son garçon et lui dit: « Va, porte-les à la ville. »
Jonathan gave his weapons to his young man and said to him, “Go, take them to the city.”
41 Dès que le garçon fut parti, David se leva du midi, tomba la face contre terre et se prosterna trois fois. Ils s'embrassèrent et pleurèrent l'un l'autre, et c'est David qui pleura le plus.
As soon as the young man was gone, David stood up from behind the mound, lay facedown on the ground, and bowed himself three times. They kissed one another and wept together, with David weeping the more.
42 Jonathan dit à David: « Va en paix, car nous avons tous deux juré au nom de l'Éternel, en disant: « L'Éternel est entre moi et toi, entre ma descendance et ta descendance, pour toujours. » Il se leva et partit, et Jonathan alla à la ville.
Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, because we have both sworn in the name of Yahweh and said, 'May Yahweh be between you and me, and between my descendants and your descendants, forever.'” Then David stood up and left, and Jonathan returned to the city.
