Proverbs 6
1 My son! if thou hast been surety for thy friend, Hast stricken for a stranger thy hand,
Mon fils, si tu as cautionné ton prochain, si pour un autre tu as donné ta main,
2 Hast been snared with sayings of thy mouth, Hast been captured with sayings of thy mouth,
si tu es engagé par les paroles de ta bouche, lié par les paroles de ta bouche;
3 Do this now, my son, and be delivered, For thou hast come into the hand of thy friend. Go, trample on thyself, and strengthen thy friend,
ah! fais ceci, mon fils, dégage-toi, car tu es tombé entre les mains de ton prochain! Va et te jette à ses pieds, et presse instamment ton prochain!
4 Give not sleep to thine eyes, And slumber to thine eyelids,
N'accorde ni sommeil à tes yeux, ni assoupissement à les paupières!
5 Be delivered as a roe from the hand, And as a bird from the hand of a fowler.
Dégage-toi, comme la gazelle, de la main, comme l'oiseau, de la main de l'oiseleur!
6 Go unto the ant, O slothful one, See her ways and be wise;
Va vers la fourmi, paresseux! observe ses voies, et deviens sage!
7 Which hath not captain, overseer, and ruler,
Elle n'a ni prince, ni chef, ni souverain;
8 She doth prepare in summer her bread, She hath gathered in harvest her food.
cependant elle fait en été ses provisions, et durant la moisson recueille sa nourriture.
9 Till when, O slothful one, dost thou lie? When dost thou arise from thy sleep?
Jusques à quand, paresseux, seras-tu couché? quand te lèveras-tu secouant ton sommeil?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber, A little clasping of the hands to rest,
« Un peu dormir, un peu sommeiller, un peu croiser les bras en étant couché! »
11 And thy poverty hath come as a traveller, And thy want as an armed man.
Ainsi, la pauvreté fondra sur toi, comme un larron, et l'indigence, comme un homme portant le bouclier.
12 A man of worthlessness, a man of iniquity, Walking [with] perverseness of mouth,
Il est un indigne l'homme faux, dont la bouche s'écarte de la droiture,
13 Winking with his eyes, speaking with his feet, Directing with his fingers,
qui cligne les yeux, parle du pied, et fait entendre du doigt.
14 Frowardness [is] in his heart, devising evil at all times, Contentions he sendeth forth.
Les détours sont dans son cœur, il trame le mal en tout temps, et excite les rixes.
15 Therefore suddenly cometh his calamity, Instantly he is broken — and no healing.
Aussi sa ruine arrivera tout-à-coup, soudain il sera brisé, et sans remède.
16 These six hath Jehovah hated, Yea, seven [are] abominations to His soul.
Il y a six choses que hait l'Éternel, et sept qui sont l'abomination de son âme:
17 Eyes high — tongues false — And hands shedding innocent blood —
les yeux hautains, la langue menteuse, et les mains qui répandent le sang innocent;
18 A heart devising thoughts of vanity — Feet hasting to run to evil —
un cœur qui médite des projets pernicieux, des pieds empressés à courir au mal;
19 A false witness [who] doth breathe out lies — And one sending forth contentions between brethren.
celui qui, faux témoin, profère des mensonges, et celui qui excite des querelles entre les frères.
20 Keep, my son, the command of thy father, And leave not the law of thy mother.
Garde, mon fils, le précepte de ton père, et ne néglige pas les leçons de ta mère!
21 Bind them on thy heart continually, Tie them on thy neck.
Tiens-les toujours attachés à ton cœur, et liés à ton col!
22 In thy going up and down, it leadeth thee, In thy lying down, it watcheth over thee, And thou hast awaked — it talketh [with] thee.
Si tu chemines, ils te garderont; si tu es couché, ils veilleront sur toi; à ton réveil ils t'entretiendront.
23 For a lamp [is] the command, And the law a light, And a way of life [are] reproofs of instruction,
Car le précepte est un flambeau, et la leçon une lumière, et les remontrances de la sagesse sont la voie de la vie,
24 To preserve thee from an evil woman, From the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
pour te préserver de la femme mauvaise, du doux parler de la langue étrangère.
25 Desire not her beauty in thy heart, And let her not take thee with her eyelids.
Ne convoite point sa beauté dans ton cœur, et que ses paupières ne te captivent pas!
26 For a harlot consumeth unto a cake of bread, And an adulteress the precious soul hunteth.
Car pour une impudique on se réduit à un morceau de pain, mais la femme mariée tend un piège à la vie qui est chère.
27 Doth a man take fire into his bosom, And are his garments not burnt?
Met-on du feu dans son sein, sans que les vêtements en soient embrasés?
28 Doth a man walk on the hot coals, And are his feet not scorched?
Marche-t-on sur des charbons ardents, sans que les pieds en soient brûlés?
29 So [is] he who hath gone in unto the wife of his neighbour, None who doth touch her is innocent.
De même pour celui qui va vers la femme de son prochain: qui la touchera, ne restera pas impuni.
30 They do not despise the thief, When he stealeth to fill his soul when he is hungry,
On ne néglige pas le voleur, quand il vole pour satisfaire son désir, parce qu'il a faim;
31 And being found he repayeth sevenfold, All the substance of his house he giveth.
mais surpris, il restitue sept fois, et livre tout le bien de sa maison.
32 He who committeth adultery [with] a woman lacketh heart, He is destroying his soul who doth it.
Qui commet adultère avec une femme, n'a point la raison qui veut se perdre, le fait.
33 A stroke and shame he doth find, And his reproach is not wiped away,
Il trouve des coups et de la honte, et son opprobre ne s'efface point.
34 For jealousy [is] the fury of a man, And he doth not spare in a day of vengeance.
Car la jalousie est une fureur pour l'homme; il sera sans pitié au jour de la vengeance,
35 He accepteth not the appearance of any atonement, Yea, he doth not consent, Though thou dost multiply bribes!
il n'aura égard à aucune rançon, et n'acceptera pas, quand tu multiplierais les dons.
