Nehemiah 2
1 And it cometh to pass, in the month of Nisan, the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, wine [is] before him, and I lift up the wine, and give to the king, and I had not been sad before him;
Et au mois de Nisan, la vingtième année du roi Arthachsastha, comme le vin était devant lui, je pris le vin et le servis au roi; (d'ailleurs je n'avais jamais été mal avec lui.)
2 and the king saith to me, 'Wherefore [is] thy face sad, and thou not sick? this is nothing except sadness of heart;' and I fear very much,
Alors le roi me dit: Pourquoi as-tu l'air triste? Tu n'es pourtant pas malade? Ce n'est pas autre chose que chagrin du cœur. Et j'éprouvai une grande crainte.
3 and say to the king, 'Let the king to the age live! wherefore should not my face be sad, when the city, the place of the graves of my fathers, [is] a waste, and its gates have been consumed with fire?'
Et je dis au roi: Que le roi vive éternellement! Comment n'aurais-je pas un air triste quand la cité, sépulture de mes pères, gît désolée, et que le feu a consumé ses portes?
4 And the king saith to me, 'For what art thou seeking?' and I pray unto the God of the heavens,
Et le roi me dit: Que me demandes-tu donc? Alors j'adressai ma prière au Dieu des Cieux,
5 and say to the king, 'If to the king [it be] good, and if thy servant be pleasing before thee, that thou send me unto Judah, unto the city of the graves of my fathers, and I built it.'
et je dis au roi: Avec l'agrément du roi, et si ton serviteur a tes bonnes grâces, c'est que tu m'envoies en Juda, dans la ville des tombeaux de mes pères, pour la restaurer.
6 And the king saith to me (and the queen is sitting near him), 'How long is thy journey? and when dost thou return?' and it is good before the king, and he sendeth me away, and I set to him a time.
Alors le roi et l'épouse assise à ses côtés me dirent: Combien de temps durera ton voyage, et quand seras-tu de retour? Et il plut au roi de m'envoyer, et je lui fixai un temps.
7 And I say to the king, 'If to the king [it be] good, letters let be given to me for the governors beyond the River, that they let me pass over till that I come in unto Judah:
Et je dis au roi: Avec l'agrément du roi je voudrais que l'on me donnât des lettres pour les gouverneurs de l'autre côté du Fleuve, afin qu'ils m'accordent le passage jusqu'à mon arrivée en Juda,
8 and a letter unto Asaph, keeper of the paradise that the king hath, that he give to me trees for beams [for] the gates of the palace that the house hath, and for the wall of the city, and for the house into which I enter;' and the king giveth to me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
et une lettre pour Asaph, l'intendant de la forêt royale, afin qu'il me fournisse le bois pour la charpente des portes de la citadelle près du Temple, et pour le mur de la ville, et la Maison en vue de laquelle je vais. Et le roi me l'accorda par l'effet de la bénigne main de Dieu qui me protégeait.
9 And I come in unto the governors beyond the River, and give to them the letters of the king; and the king sendeth with me heads of a force, and horsemen;
J'arrivai donc chez les gouverneurs de l'autre côté du Fleuve, et je leur remis les lettres du roi; et le roi me fit escorter par des officiers de l'armée et de la cavalerie.
10 and Sanballat the Horonite heareth, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and it is evil to them — a great evil — that a man hath come in to seek good for the sons of Israel.
Mais lorsque Saneballat, de Choronaïm, et Tobie, le serviteur, Ammonite, en furent informés, ils furent extrêmement chagrins de ce qu'il vînt un homme pour chercher l'intérêt des enfants d'Israël.
11 And I come in unto Jerusalem, and I am there three days,
Et j'arrivai à Jérusalem, et après y avoir été trois jours,
12 and I rise by night, I and a few men with me, and have not declared to a man what my God is giving unto my heart to do for Jerusalem, and there is no beast with me except the beast on which I am riding.
je me levai pendant la nuit, moi et le peu d'hommes que j'avais avec moi, mais je ne m'ouvris à personne sur ce que mon Dieu m'avait mis dans le cœur de faire pour Jérusalem; et point de bête de somme avec moi, sinon l'animal qui me servait de monture.
13 And I go out through the gate of the valley by night, and unto the front of the fountain of the dragon, and unto the gate of the dunghill, and I am measuring about the walls of Jerusalem, that are broken down, and its gates consumed with fire.
Et de nuit je sortis par la porte de la Vallée, en allant à la source des dragons jusqu'à la porte du Fumier et j'examinai les murs de Jérusalem qui étaient là en ruine, et ses portes consumées par le feu.
14 And I pass over unto the gate of the fountain, and unto the pool of the king, and there is no place for the beast under me to pass over,
Puis je passai à la porte de la Fontaine et à l'Étang Royal; et il n'y avait pas de place où pût passer l'animal que je montais.
15 and I am going up through the brook by night, and am measuring about the wall, and turn back, and come in through the gate of the valley, and turn back.
Et de nuit je montai la Vallée, examinant les murs, et reprenant mon chemin par la porte de la Vallée je rentrai.
16 And the prefects have not known whither I have gone, and what I am doing; and to the Jews, and to the priests, and to the freemen, and to the prefects, and to the rest of those doing the work, hitherto I have not declared [it];
Cependant les chefs ignoraient où j'étais allé et ce que j'avais fait. Car ni aux Juifs, ni aux Prêtres, ni aux notables, ni aux chefs, ni aux autres qui devaient faire les travaux, jusqu'ici je ne m'étais encore ouvert.
17 and I say unto them, 'Ye are seeing the evil that we are in, in that Jerusalem [is] waste, and its gates have been burnt with fire; come and we build the wall of Jerusalem, and we are not any more a reproach.'
Alors je leur dis: Vous voyez l'état misérable où nous sommes, comme Jérusalem est désolée et ses portes brûlées par le feu. Venez! relevons le mur de Jérusalem, afin que nous ne soyons plus dans l'opprobre.
18 And I declare to them the hand of my God that is good upon me, and also the words of the king that he said to me, and they say, 'Let us rise, and we have built;' and they strengthen their hands for good.
Et je leur découvris comment la bénigne main de mon Dieu m'avait protégé, et aussi les paroles que le roi m'avait adressées. Et ils dirent: Nous sommes prêts pour faire la restauration. Et ils s'encouragèrent au bien.
19 And Sanballat the Horonite heareth, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, and they mock at us, and despise us, and say, 'What [is] this thing that ye are doing? against the king are ye rebelling?'
Mais lorsque Saneballat de Choronaïm, et Tobie, le serviteur, Ammonite, et Gésem l'Arabe, l'apprirent, ils se moquèrent de nous, et nous montrèrent du mépris et dirent: Qu'est-ce que vous faites là? Est-ce que vous vous révoltez contre le roi?
20 And I return them word, and say to them, 'The God of the heavens — He doth give prosperity to us, and we His servants rise and have built; and to you there is no portion, and right, and memorial in Jerusalem.'
Et je leur répliquai en ces termes: Le Dieu des Cieux nous donnera le succès, et nous, ses serviteurs, nous allons nous mettre à restaurer. Mais vous n'avez ni communauté, ni droit, ni souvenir en Jérusalem.
