Ecclesiastes 8
1 Who [is] as the wise? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? The wisdom of man causeth his face to shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.
Qui est comme le sage, et qui connaît comme lui l’explication des choses? La sagesse d’un homme fait briller son visage, et la rudesse de sa face est transfigurée.
2 I pray thee, the commandment of a king keep, even for the sake of the oath of God.
Je te dis: Observe les ordres du roi, et cela à cause du serment fait à Dieu;
3 Be not troubled at his presence, thou mayest go, stand not in an evil thing, for all that he pleaseth he doth.
ne te hâte pas de t’éloigner de lui. Ne persiste pas dans une chose mauvaise; car tout ce qu’il veut, il peut le faire;
4 Where the word of a king [is] power [is], and who saith to him, 'What dost thou?'
la parole du roi, en effet, est souveraine, et qui lui dira: « Que fais-tu? »
5 Whoso is keeping a command knoweth no evil thing, and time and judgment the heart of the wise knoweth.
Celui qui observe le précepte n’éprouve rien de mal, et le cœur du sage connaîtra le temps et le jugement.
6 For to every delight there is a time and a judgment, for the misfortune of man is great upon him.
Il y a en effet, pour toute chose, un temps et un jugement, car il est grand le mal qui tombera sur l’homme.
7 For he knoweth not that which shall be, for when it shall be who declareth to him?
Il ne sait pas ce qui arrivera, et qui lui dira comment cela arrivera?
8 There is no man ruling over the spirit to restrain the spirit, and there is no authority over the day of death, and there is no discharge in battle, and wickedness delivereth not its possessors.
L’homme n’est pas maître de son souffle, pour pouvoir retenir son souffle, et il n’a aucune puissance sur le jour de sa mort; il n’y a pas de dispense dans ce combat, et le crime ne saurait sauver son homme.
9 All this I have seen so as to give my heart to every work that hath been done under the sun; a time that man hath ruled over man to his own evil.
J’ai vu toutes ces choses, en appliquant mon cœur à toute l’œuvre qui se fait sous le soleil, en un temps où un homme domine sur un homme pour le malheur de celui-ci.
10 And so I have seen the wicked buried, and they went in, even from the Holy Place they go, and they are forgotten in the city whether they had so done. This also [is] vanity.
Et alors j’ai vu des méchants recevoir la sépulture et entrer dans leur repos, tandis que s’en vont loin du lieu saint et sont oubliés dans la ville des hommes qui ont agi avec droiture; cela encore est une vanité.
11 Because sentence hath not been done [on] an evil work speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of man is full within them to do evil.
Parce que la sentence portée contre les mauvaises actions ne s’exécute pas en toute hâte, à cause de cela le cœur des enfants des hommes s’enhardit en eux à faire le mal;
12 Though a sinner is doing evil a hundred [times], and prolonging [himself] for it, surely also I know that there is good to those fearing God, who fear before Him.
mais, quoique le pécheur fasse cent fois le mal, et prolonge ses jours, je sais, moi, que le bonheur est pour ceux qui craignent Dieu, qui sont dans la crainte en sa présence.
13 And good is not to the wicked, and he doth not prolong days as a shadow, because he is not fearing before God.
Mais le bonheur n’est pas pour le méchant; et pareil à l’ombre, il ne prolongera pas ses jours, parce qu’il ne craint pas Dieu.
14 There is a vanity that hath been done upon the earth, that there are righteous ones unto whom it is coming according to the work of the wicked, and there are wicked ones unto whom it is coming according to the work of the righteous. I have said that this also [is] vanity.
Il est une autre vanité qui se produit sur la terre: C’est qu’il y a des justes auxquels il arrive des choses qui conviennent aux œuvres des méchants; et il y a des méchants auxquels il arrive des choses qui conviennent aux œuvres des justes. Je dis que cela encore est une vanité.
15 And I have praised mirth because there is no good to man under the sun except to eat and to drink, and to rejoice, and it remaineth with him of his labour the days of his life that God hath given to him under the sun.
Aussi j’ai loué la joie, parce qu’il n’y a de bonheur pour l’homme sous le soleil qu’à manger et à boire et à se réjouir; et c’est là ce qui doit l’accompagner dans son travail, pendant les jours de vie que Dieu lui donne sous le soleil.
16 When I gave my heart to know wisdom and to see the business that hath been done on the earth, (for there is also a spectator in whose eyes sleep is not by day and by night),
Lorsque j’ai appliqué mon cœur à connaître la sagesse et à considérer la tâche qui s’accomplit sur la terre, — car ni le jour ni la nuit l’homme ne voit de ses yeux le sommeil, —
17 then I considered all the work of God, that man is not able to find out the work that hath been done under the sun, because though man labour to seek, yet he doth not find; and even though the wise man speak of knowing he is not able to find.
j’ai vu toute l’œuvre de Dieu; j’ai vu que l’homme ne saurait trouver l’œuvre qui se fait sous le soleil; l’homme se fatigue à chercher, et ne trouve pas; même si le sage veut connaître, il ne peut trouver.
