1 Samuel 4
1 And the word of Samuel is to all Israel, and Israel goeth out to meet the Philistines for battle, and they encamp by Eben-Ezer, and the Philistines have encamped in Aphek,
y las palabras de Samuel se comunicaron a todos los israelitas. Los israelitas marcharon para enfrentarse a los filisteos en la batalla. Acamparon en Ebenezer, mientras los filisteos lo hacían en Afec.
2 and the Philistines set themselves in array to meet Israel, and the battle spreadeth itself, and Israel is smitten before the Philistines, and they smite among the ranks in the field about four thousand men.
Los filisteos atacaron a los israelitas en formación, y cuando la batalla se extendió, los filisteos derrotaron a los israelitas, matando a 4.000 de ellos en el campo de batalla.
3 And the people cometh in unto the camp, and the elders of Israel say, 'Why hath Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? we take unto us from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and it cometh into our midst, and He doth save us out of the hand of our enemies.'
Cuando el ejército israelita regresó al campamento, los ancianos de Israel preguntaron: “¿Por qué el Señor nos ha derrotado hoy ante los filisteos? Vayamos a buscar el Arca del Pacto del Señor a Silo, para que nos acompañe y nos salve de nuestros enemigos”.
4 And the people sendeth to Shiloh, and they take up thence the ark of the covenant of Jehovah of Hosts, inhabiting the cherubs, and there [are] two sons of Eli, with the ark of the covenant of God, Hophni and Phinehas.
Así que el ejército envió hombres a Silo, y trajeron de vuelta el Arca del Pacto del Señor Todopoderoso, el que está sentado en su trono entre los querubines. Ofni y Finees, los dos hijos de Elí, estaban allí con el Arca del Pacto del Señor.
5 And it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the ark of the covenant of Jehovah unto the camp, that all Israel shout — a great shout — and the earth is moved.
Cuando el Arca del Pacto del Señor llegó al campamento, todos los israelitas dieron un grito tan fuerte que hizo temblar el suelo.
6 And the Philistines hear the noise of the shouting, and say, 'What [is] the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews?' and they perceive that the ark of Jehovah hath come in unto the camp.
Cuando los filisteos oyeron todo el griterío, preguntaron: “¿Qué significa este griterío en el campamento israelita?” Cuando se enteraron de que el Arca del Señor había llegado al campamento,
7 And the Philistines are afraid, for they said, 'God hath come in unto the camp;' and they say, 'Woe to us, for there hath not been like this heretofore.
los filisteos se asustaron. “Un dios ha llegado al campamento”, dijeron. “Estamos en problemas, pues nunca antes había sucedido algo así.
8 Woe to us, who doth deliver us out of the hand of these honourable gods? these [are] the gods who are smiting the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.
¡Esto es un desastre para nosotros! ¿Quién nos salvará del poder de estos poderosos dioses? Estos son los dioses que atacaron a los egipcios con toda clase de plagas en el desierto.
9 Strengthen yourselves, and become men, O Philistines, lest ye do service to Hebrews, as they have done to you — then ye have become men, and have fought.'
¡Sean valientes y luchen como verdaderos hombres, filisteos! De lo contrario, terminarán como esclavos de los israelitas, tal como ellos fueron sus esclavos. Sean hombres de verdad y luchen”.
10 And the Philistines fight, and Israel is smitten, and they flee each to his tents, and the blow is very great, and there fall of Israel thirty thousand footmen;
Así que los filisteos lucharon, y los israelitas fueron derrotados: cada uno huyó a su casa. El número de muertos fue muy grande: treinta mil de la infantería israelita murieron.
11 and the ark of God hath been taken, and the two sons of Eli have died, Hophni and Phinehas.
El Arca de Dios fue capturada y murieron Ofni y Finees, los dos hijos de Elí.
12 And a man of Benjamin runneth out of the ranks, and cometh into Shiloh, on that day, and his long robes [are] rent, and earth on his head;
Un hombre de la tribu de Benjamín huyó aquel día de la batalla hasta Silo. Su ropa estaba rota y tenía tierra en la cabeza.
13 and he cometh in, and lo, Eli is sitting on the throne by the side of the way, watching, for his heart hath been trembling for the ark of God, and the man hath come in to declare [it] in the city, and all the city crieth out.
Cuando llegó, Elí estaba sentado en su silla junto al camino, atento a las noticias porque estaba preocupado por el Arca de Dios. Cuando el hombre llegó a la ciudad y dio su informe, todo el pueblo lloró a gritos.
14 And Eli heareth the noise of the cry, and saith, 'What — the noise of this tumult!' And the man hasted, and cometh in, and declareth to Eli.
Elí oyó el llanto y preguntó: “¿Qué es todo este ruido?”. El hombre corrió hacia Elí y le contó lo que había sucedido.
15 And Eli is a son of ninety and eight years, and his eyes have stood, and he hath not been able to see.
Elí tenía noventa y ocho años, y sus ojos estaban fijos porque no podía ver.
16 And the man saith unto Eli, 'I [am] he who hath come out of the ranks, and I out of the ranks have fled to-day;' and he saith, 'What hath been the matter, my son?'
“Acabo de llegar de la batalla”, dijo el hombre. “Hoy he huido de ella”. “¿Qué pasó, hijo mío?” preguntó Elí.
17 And he who is bearing tidings answereth and saith, 'Israel hath fled before the Philistines, and also a great slaughter hath been among the people, and also thy two sons have died — Hophni and Phinehas — and the ark of God hath been captured.'
“Israel huyó de los filisteos; fuimos derrotados”, respondió el mensajero. “También tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees, fueron asesinados, y el Arca de Dios ha sido capturada”.
18 And it cometh to pass, at his mentioning the ark of God, that he falleth from off the throne backward, by the side of the gate, and his neck is broken, and he dieth, for the man [is] old and heavy, and he hath judged Israel forty years.
En cuanto se mencionó el Arca de Dios, Elí cayó de espaldas de su silla junto a la puerta de la ciudad. Como era viejo y pesado, se rompió la nuca y murió. Elí había sido el líder de Israel durante cuarenta años.
19 And his daughter-in-law, wife of Phinehas, [is] pregnant, about to bear, and she heareth the report of the taking of the ark of God, that her father-in-law and her husband have died, and she boweth, and beareth, for her pains have turned upon her.
Su nuera, la esposa de Finees, estaba embarazada y a punto de dar a luz. Cuando escuchó la noticia de que el Arca de Dios había sido capturada, y que su suegro y su marido habían muerto, se puso de parto y dio a luz, pero sus dolores de parto fueron demasiado fuertes.
20 And at the time of her death, when the women who are standing by her say, 'Fear not, for a son thou hast borne,' she hath not answered, nor set her heart [to it];
Y justo antes de morir, las mujeres que la atendían le dijeron: “No te rindas, has dado a luz un hijo”. Pero ella no contestó ni dio ninguna respuesta.
21 and she calleth the youth I-Chabod, saying, 'Honour hath removed from Israel,' because of the taking of the ark of God, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
Entonces llamó al niño Icabod, diciendo: “La gloria se ha ido de Israel”, porque el Arca de Dios había sido capturada, y su suegro y su marido habían muerto.
22 And she saith, 'Honour hath removed from Israel, for the ark of God hath been taken.'
Ella dijo: “La gloria ha dejado a Israel, porque el Arca de Dios ha sido capturada”.
