Matthew 2
1 Therfor whanne Jhesus was borun in Bethleem of Juda, in the daies of king Eroude, lo! astromyenes camen fro the eest to Jerusalem,
Jésus étant né à Bethléem, dans la Judée, aux jours du roi Hérode, des mages arrivèrent d'Orient à Jérusalem.
2 and seiden, Where is he, that is borun king of Jewis? for we han seyn his sterre in the eest, and we comen to worschipe him.
«Où est, demandèrent-ils, le nouveau-né, roi des Juifs? Nous avons vu son étoile en Orient et nous sommes venus pour l'adorer.»
3 But king Eroude herde, and was trublid, and al Jerusalem with hym.
En entendant de telles paroles, le roi Hérode fut troublé et, avec lui, toute la ville de Jérusalem;
4 And he gaderide to gidre alle the prynces of prestis, and scribis of the puple, and enqueride of hem, where Crist shulde be borun.
il convoqua tous les chefs des prêtres et scribes du peuple et s'informa d'eux où devait naître le Christ.
5 And thei seiden to hym, In Bethleem of Juda; for so it is writun bi a profete,
Ils lui répondirent: «A Bethléem dans la Judée.» (Voici, en effet, ce qui a été écrit par le prophète:
6 And thou, Bethleem, the lond of Juda, art not the leest among the prynces of Juda; for of thee a duyk schal go out, that schal gouerne my puple of Israel.
«Et toi, Bethléem, terre de Juda, Tu n'es certainement pas le plus petit des chefs-lieux de Juda, Car de toi sortira un conducteur Qui paîtra mon peuple, Israël.»)
7 Thanne Eroude clepide pryueli the astromyens, and lernyde bisili of hem the tyme of the sterre that apperide to hem.
Là dessus, Hérode fit appeler les mages en secret et s'informa auprès d'eux de l'époque où l'étoile avait paru.
8 And he sente hem in to Bethleem, and seide, Go ye, and axe ye bisili of the child, and whanne yee han foundun, telle ye it to me, that Y also come, and worschipe hym.
Puis il les envoya à Bethléem. «Allez, leur dit-il, prenez des informations exactes sur cet enfant et, quand vous l'aurez trouvé, faites-le moi savoir, pour que, moi aussi, j'aille l'adorer.»
9 And whanne thei hadden herd the kyng, thei wenten forth. And lo! the sterre, that thei siyen in the eest, wente bifore hem, til it cam, and stood aboue, where the child was.
Sur ces paroles du roi, ils partirent; et l'étoile qu'ils avaient vue en Orient les précédait jusqu'à ce que, parvenue au-dessus du lieu où était l'enfant, elle s'arrêta.
10 And thei siyen the sterre, and ioyeden with a ful greet ioye.
A la vue de l'étoile, ils se réjouirent d'une grande joie.
11 And thei entriden in to the hous, and founden the child with Marie, his modir; and thei felden doun, and worschipiden him. And whanne thei hadden openyd her tresouris, thei offryden to hym yiftis, gold, encense, and myrre.
Ils entrèrent dans la maison, ils virent l'enfant avec Marie sa mère; et, se prosternant, ils l'adorèrent. Ensuite, ouvrant leurs trésors, ils lui offrirent en présent de l'or, de l'encens et de la myrrhe.
12 And whanne thei hadden take an aunswere in sleep, that thei schulden not turne ayen to Eroude, thei turneden ayen bi anothir weie in to her cuntrey.
Ayant été miraculeusement avertis en songe de ne pas revenir vers Hérode, ils regagnèrent leur pays par un autre chemin.
13 And whanne thei weren goon, lo! the aungel of the Lord apperide to Joseph in sleep, and seide, Rise vp, and take the child and his modir, and fle in to Egipt, and be thou there, til that I seie to thee; for it is to come, that Eroude seke the child, to destrie hym.
Après leur départ, un ange du Seigneur apparut en songe à Joseph et lui dit: «Lève-toi! prends l'enfant et sa mère, et fuis en Égypte où tu resteras jusqu'à ce que je te reparle; car Hérode va rechercher l'enfant afin de le faire périr.»
14 And Joseph roos, and took the child and his modir bi nyyt, and wente in to Egipt,
Cette nuit même, Joseph se leva, prit l'enfant et sa mère et partit pour l'Égypte.
15 and he was there to the deeth of Eroude; that it schulde be fulfillid, that was seid of the Lord bi the profete, seiynge, Fro Egipt Y haue clepid my sone.
Il y resta jusqu'à la mort d'Hérode. (C'était afin que fût accompli ce que le Seigneur avait dit par le prophète en ces mots: «J'ai rappelé mon fils d'Égypte».)
16 Thanne Eroude seynge that he was disseyued of the astromyens, was ful wrooth; and he sente, and slowe alle the children, that weren in Bethleem, and in alle the coostis therof, fro two yeer age and with inne, aftir the tyme that he had enquerid of the astromyens.
Quant à Hérode, se voyant joué par les mages, il se mit fort en colère, et envoya tuer tous les enfants de Bethléem et de ses environs âgés de deux ans et au-dessous suivant l'époque dont il s'était informé auprès des mages.
17 Thanne `it was fulfillid, that was seid bi Jeremye, the profete,
(C'est alors que fut accompli ce qui avait été dit par le prophète Jérémie en ces mots:
18 seiynge, A vois was herd an hiy, wepynge and moche weilyng, Rachel biwepynge hir sones, and she wolde not be coumfortid, for thei ben noyt.
«Une voix a été entendue dans Rama, Des pleurs et de longs sanglots; C'est Rachel pleurant ses enfants, Et elle ne veut pas être consolée parce qu'ils ne sont plus.»)
19 But whanne Eroude was deed, loo! the aungel of the Lord apperide to Joseph in sleep in Egipt,
Quand Hérode fut mort, un ange du Seigneur apparut en songe à Joseph en Égypte
20 and seide, Ryse vp, and take the child and his modir, and go in to the lond of Israel; for thei that souyten the lijf of the chijld ben deed.
et lui dit: «Lève-toi, prends l'enfant et sa mère et retourne dans le pays d'Israël; car ceux qui en voulaient à la vie de l'enfant sont morts.»
21 Joseph roos, and took the child and his modir, and cam in to the loond of Israel.
Joseph se levant donc prit l'enfant et sa mère et rentra dans le pays d'Israël.
22 And he herde that Archilaus regnede in Judee for Eroude, his fadir, and dredde to go thidir. And he was warned in sleep, and wente in to the parties of Galilee;
Mais ayant appris qu'Archélaüs régnait en Judée à la place d'Hérode son père, il appréhenda d'y aller. Miraculeusement averti en songe, il partit pour la province de Galilée
23 and cam, and dwelte in a citee, that ys clepid Nazareth, that it shulde be fulfillid, that was seid bi profetis, For he shal be clepid a Nazarey.
et, y étant arrivé, il habita une ville appelée Nazareth. (C'était afin que fut accompli ce qui a été dit par les prophètes: Il sera appelé Nazaréen).
