Genesis 20

1 Abraham yede forth fro thennus in to the lond of the south, and dwellide bitwixe Cades and Sur, and was a pilgrym in Geraris;

Abraham brach dann von dort auf (und zog) in den Südgau, wo er seinen Wohnsitz zwischen Kades und Sur nahm. Er hielt sich aber zeitweise als Fremdling auch in Gerar auf

2 and he seide of Sare, his wijf, Sche is my sistir. Therfor Abymalec, kyng of Gerare, sente, and took hir.

und gab dort seine Frau Sara für seine Schwester aus. Da sandte Abimelech, der König von Gerar, hin und ließ Sara zu sich holen.

3 Sotheli God cam to Abymalec bi a sweuene in the nyyt, and seide to hym, Lo! thou schalt die, for the wooman which thou hast take, for sche hath an hosebond.

Aber in der Nacht kam Gott zu Abimelech im Traum und sagte zu ihm: »Jetzt bist du des Todes wegen der Frau, die du dir hast holen lassen: sie ist ja eines Mannes Ehefrau!«

4 Forsothe Abymalech touchide not hir; and he seide, Lord, whether thou schalt sle folc vnkunnynge and iust?

Abimelech war ihr aber noch nicht nahegekommen; darum antwortete er: »O Herr, du wirst doch nicht ein schuldloses Volk umbringen?

5 Whether he seide not to me, Sche is my sistir, and sche seide, He is my brother? In the symplenesse of myn herte, and in the clennesse of myn hondis Y dide this.

Hat er nicht selbst zu mir gesagt, daß sie seine Schwester sei? Und auch sie selbst hat erklärt, er sei ihr Bruder. In der Unschuld meines Herzens und mit reinen Händen habe ich dies getan!«

6 And the Lord seide to hym, And Y woot that thou didist bi symple herte, and therfor Y kepte thee, lest thou didist synne ayens me, and I suffride not that thou touchidist hir;

Da sagte Gott weiter im Traum zu ihm: »Auch ich weiß wohl, daß du in der Unschuld deines Herzens so gehandelt hast, und ich selbst habe dich davor behütet, daß du dich gegen mich versündigt hast; darum habe ich auch nicht zugelassen, daß du sie berührtest.

7 now therfor yelde thou the wijf to hir hosebonde, for he is a profete; and he schal preye for thee, and thou schalt lyue; sotheli if thou nylte yelde, wite thou that thou schalt die bi deeth, thou and alle thingis that ben thine.

So gibt also jetzt dem Manne seine Frau zurück, denn er ist ein Prophet; dann soll er Fürbitte für dich einlegen, so daß du am Leben bleibst. Gibst du sie aber nicht zurück, so wisse, daß du mit allen deinen Angehörigen sterben mußt!«

8 And anoon Abynalech roos bi nyyt, and clepide alle his seruauntis, and spak alle these wordis in the eeris of hem; and alle men dredden greetli.

Am andern Morgen in der Frühe berief Abimelech eiligst alle seine Diener und teilte ihnen den ganzen Vorfall mit; da gerieten die Männer in große Bestürzung.

9 Sotheli Abymalec clepide also Abraham, and seide to hym, What hast thou do to vs? what synneden we ayens thee, for thou hast brouyt in on me and on my rewme a greuouse synne? thou hast do to vs whiche thingis thou ouytist not do.

Abimelech ließ dann Abraham rufen und sagte zu ihm: »Was hast du uns da angetan? Worin habe ich mich dir gegenüber verfehlt, daß du eine so große Verschuldung über mich und mein Reich gebracht hast? Du hast an mir in einer Weise gehandelt, wie es nicht recht ist!«

10 And eft Abimalech axide, and seide, What thing seiyist thou, that thou woldist do this?

Weiter sagte Abimelech zu Abraham: »Was hast du dir denn dabei gedacht, daß du so gehandelt hast?«

11 Abraham answerde, Y thouyte with me, and seide, in hap the drede of God is not in this place; and thei schulen sle me for my wijf;

Da antwortete Abraham: »Ja, ich dachte, es sei sicherlich keine Gottesfurcht an diesem Orte zu finden und man werde mich um meiner Frau willen ums Leben bringen.

12 in other maner forsothe and sche is my sister verili, the douyter of my fadir, and not the douyter of my moder; and Y weddide hir in to wijf;

Übrigens ist sie wirklich meine Schwester, die Tochter meines Vaters, nur nicht die Tochter meiner Mutter, und so hat sie meine Frau werden können.

13 sotheli aftir that God ladde me out of the hous of my fadir, Y seide to hir, Thou schalt do this mercy with me in ech place to which we schulen entre; thou schalt seie, that Y am thi brother.

Als mich nun Gott einst aus meines Vaters Hause ins Ungewisse wegziehen hieß, da habe ich zu ihr gesagt: ›Erweise mir die Liebe, daß du überall, wohin wir kommen werden, von mir sagst, ich sei dein Bruder.‹«

14 Therfore Abymelech took scheep, and oxun, and seruauntis, and handmaydenes, and yaf to Abraham; and he yeldide to him Sare, `his wijf, and seide, The lond is bifor you;

Da nahm Abimelech Kleinvieh und Rinder, Knechte und Mägde und schenkte sie dem Abraham, auch seine Frau Sara gab er ihm zurück.

15 dwelle thou, where euere it plesith thee. Forsothe Abymelech seide to Sare, Lo!

Dann fügte er hinzu: »Mein Land steht dir nunmehr offen: nimm deinen Wohnsitz, wo es dir gefällt!«

16 Y yaf a thousand platis of siluer to thi brother; this schal be to thee in to hiling of iyen to al men that ben with thee; and whider euere thou goist, haue thou mynde that thou art takun.

Zu Sara aber sagte er: »Hier gebe ich deinem Bruder tausend Silberstücke: das soll für dich ein Sühnegeld in den Augen aller sein, die bei dir sind, so daß du nun in allem gerechtfertigt dastehst!«

17 Sotheli for Abraham preiede, God curide Abymelech, and his wijf, and handmaydens, and thei childiden;

Darauf legte Abraham Fürbitte bei Gott ein, und Gott ließ Abimelech, seine Frau und seine Mägde wieder gesund werden, so daß sie wieder Kinder bekommen konnten;

18 for God hadde closid ech wombe of the hows of Abymelech, for Sare, the wijf of Abraham.

denn der HERR hatte den Mutterschoß aller Frauen im Hause Abimelechs verschlossen um Saras, der Frau Abrahams, willen.
