< Luke 17 >

1 Then said He to the disciples, It is impossible that offences should not come: but wo to him by whom they come.
Then He said to the disciples: “Things that cause people to fall are bound to come, but woe to him through whom they do come!
2 It were better for him that a milstone were hung about his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to offend.
It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to fall.
3 Take heed to yourselves: if thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.
Watch out for yourselves: if your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.
4 And if he trespass against thee seven times a day, and seven times in a day return to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.
Even if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in that day returns, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”
5 And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.
The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.”
6 And the Lord said, If ye had faith but as a grain of mustard-seed, ye might say to this sycamine-tree, Be thou rooted up and planted in the sea; and it would obey you.
So the Lord said: “If you had faith like a mustard seed has, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted, and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.
7 But which of you having a servant plowing, or feeding cattle, will say to him, as soon as he comes in from the field, Come hither and sit down at table?
“And which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he comes in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline to eat’?
8 But will he not rather say to him, Get ready my supper, and gird thyself, and wait upon me, till I have done, and afterwards thou shalt eat and drink.
Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat, and gird yourself and serve me until I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’?
9 Is he obliged to that servant for doing what he was ordered?
Does he thank that slave because he did the things commanded? I guess not!
10 I think not. So likewise ye, when ye have done all things that were commanded you, say we are unprofitable servants, for we have done only what we ought to do.
So likewise you, whenever you have done everything you were told to do, say, ‘We are unworthy slaves, because we have only done what we were supposed to.’”
11 And as He was going to Jerusalem, He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee;
Now as He was traveling toward Jerusalem, He went along between Samaria and Galilee.
12 and as He entered into a certain village, there met Him ten men that were lepers:
And as He entered a certain village, ten men met Him—being lepers they stood at a distance.
13 who stood at a distance, and lifted up their voice, saying, Jesus master, have pity on us.
They called out, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
14 And when He saw them, He said unto them, Go and shew yourselves to the priests. And it came to pass as they were going, they were cleansed.
And paying attention He said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” It happened that as they went they were cleansed!
15 And one of them, perceiving that he was healed, returned, with a loud voice glorifying God:
Well one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, glorifying God with a loud voice;
16 and fell prostrate at his feet, giving Him thanks; and He was a Samaritan.
then he fell on his face at His feet, thanking Him—and he was a Samaritan!
17 And Jesus answered and said, Were not all the ten cleansed? and where are the other nine?
So Jesus reacted by saying: “Were not all ten cleansed? So where are the nine?
18 Are there none returning to give glory to God, but this stranger?
None were found to return and give glory to God except this foreigner!”
19 And He said to him, Arise, go thy way; thy faith hath saved thee.
Then He said to him, “Get up and go; your faith has made you well.”
20 And being asked by the pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, He answered and said, the kingdom of God cometh not with observation.
Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said: “The Kingdom of God does not come with observation;
21 Neither shall they say, Behold it is here, or behold it is there; for the kingdom of God is within you.
nor will they say, ‘Look, here!’ or ‘Look, there!’ because indeed the Kingdom of God is within you.”
22 And He said to the disciples, the time will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and shall not see it.
Then He said to the disciples: “Days are coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of the Man, and you will not see it.
23 And they will say to you, Behold, He is here, or behold He is there: but go not after them, nor follow them.
And they will say to you, ‘Look, here!’ or ‘Look, there!’ Do not go along or follow.
24 For as the lightning which lightneth from the one part of heaven shineth to the other: so also shall the Son of man be in his day.
Because just like the lightning that lights the whole sky when it flashes, so also will the Son of the Man be in His day.
25 But He must suffer many things first, and be rejected by this generation.
But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
Also, just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it also be in the days of the Son of the Man.
27 They were eating, drinking, marrying, and being married, till the day that Noah went into the ark: and the flood came and destroyed them all.
They were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.
28 And as it was likewise in the days of Lot; they were eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, and building:
Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they were eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building—
29 but the very day that Lot went out from Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all.
but on the day Lot went out from Sodom, fire and brimstone rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.
30 Thus shall it be in the day that the Son of man is revealed.
Even so will it be in the day when the Son of the Man is revealed.
31 In that day, whoever shall be on the house-top, and his goods in the house, let him not come down into it to take them away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.
“In that day, he who is on the housetop, and his goods in the house, let him not go down to get them; and likewise he who is in the field, let him not turn back.
32 Remember Lot's wife. Whosoever shall seek to save his life, shall lose it;
Remember Lot's wife!
33 and whosoever will venture his life, shall preserve it.
Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever ‘wastes’ it will preserve it.
34 In that night there shall be two in one bed; the one shall be taken and the other left:
I tell you: on that night there will be two men in one bed; one will be taken and the other left.
35 two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken and the other left:
Two women will be grinding together; one will be taken and the other left.”
36 two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken and the other left.
37 And they answered and said unto Him, Where, Lord? And He said to them, where the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.
They reacted by saying to Him, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where there is a carcass, there will the vultures also be gathered.”
