Proverbs 17
1 Better is a dry morsel with quietness, than a house full of feasting with strife.
Melhor é um pedaço seco de comida com tranquilidade, do que uma casa cheia de carne com briga.
2 A servant who deals wisely will rule over a son who causes shame, and shall have a part in the inheritance amongst the brothers.
O servo prudente dominará o filho causador de vergonha, e receberá parte da herança entre os irmãos.
3 The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests the hearts.
O crisol é para a prata, e o forno para o ouro; mas o SENHOR prova os corações.
4 An evildoer heeds wicked lips. A liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue.
O malfeitor presta atenção ao lábio injusto; o mentiroso inclina os ouvidos à língua maligna.
5 Whoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker. He who is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.
Quem ridiculariza o pobre insulta o seu Criador; aquele que se alegra da calamidade não ficará impune.
6 Children’s children are the crown of old men; the glory of children is their parents.
A coroa dos idosos [são] os filhos de seus filhos; e a glória dos filhos são seus pais.
7 Excellent speech isn’t fitting for a fool, much less do lying lips fit a prince.
Não é adequado ao tolo falar com elegância; muito menos para o príncipe falar mentiras.
8 A bribe is a precious stone in the eyes of him who gives it; wherever he turns, he prospers.
O presente é [como] uma pedra preciosa aos olhos de seus donos; para onde quer que se voltar, [tentará] ter algum proveito.
9 He who covers an offence promotes love; but he who repeats a matter separates best friends.
Quem perdoa a transgressão busca a amizade; mas quem repete o assunto afasta amigos íntimos.
10 A rebuke enters deeper into one who has understanding than a hundred lashes into a fool.
A repreensão entra mais profundamente no prudente do que cem açoites no tolo.
11 An evil man seeks only rebellion; therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
Na verdade quem é mal busca somente a rebeldia; mas o mensageiro cruel será enviado contra ele.
12 Let a bear robbed of her cubs meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
[É melhor] ao homem encontrar uma ursa roubada [de seus filhotes], do que um tolo em sua loucura.
13 Whoever rewards evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
Quanto ao que devolve o mal no lugar do bem, o mal nunca se afastará de sua casa.
14 The beginning of strife is like breaching a dam, therefore stop contention before quarrelling breaks out.
Começar uma briga é [como] deixar águas rolarem; por isso, abandona a discussão antes que haja irritação.
15 He who justifies the wicked, and he who condemns the righteous, both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD.
Quem absolve ao perverso e quem condena ao justo, ambos são abomináveis ao SENHOR.
16 Why is there money in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, since he has no understanding?
Para que serve o dinheiro na mão do tolo, já que ele não tem interesse em obter sabedoria?
17 A friend loves at all times; and a brother is born for adversity.
O amigo ama em todo tempo, e o irmão nasce para [ajudar] na angústia.
18 A man void of understanding strikes hands, and becomes collateral in the presence of his neighbour.
O homem imprudente assume compromisso, ficando como fiador de seu próximo.
19 He who loves disobedience loves strife. One who builds a high gate seeks destruction.
Quem ama a briga, ama a transgressão; quem constrói alta sua porta busca ruína.
20 One who has a perverse heart doesn’t find prosperity, and one who has a deceitful tongue falls into trouble.
O perverso de coração nunca encontrará o bem; e quem distorce [as palavras de] sua língua cairá no mal.
21 He who becomes the father of a fool grieves. The father of a fool has no joy.
Quem gera o louco [cria] sua própria tristeza; e o pai do imprudente não se alegrará.
22 A cheerful heart makes good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
O coração alegre é um bom remédio, mas o espírito abatido faz os ossos se secarem.
23 A wicked man receives a bribe in secret, to pervert the ways of justice.
O perverso toma o presente do seio, para perverter os caminhos da justiça.
24 Wisdom is before the face of one who has understanding, but the eyes of a fool wander to the ends of the earth.
A sabedoria está diante do rosto do prudente; porém os olhos do tolo [estão voltados] para os confins da terra.
25 A foolish son brings grief to his father, and bitterness to her who bore him.
O filho tolo é tristeza para seu pai, e amargura para aquela que o gerou.
26 Also to punish the righteous is not good, nor to flog officials for their integrity.
Também não é bom punir ao justo, nem bater nos príncipes por causa da justiça.
27 He who spares his words has knowledge. He who is even tempered is a man of understanding.
Quem entende o conhecimento guarda suas palavras; [e] o homem de bom entendimento [é] de espírito calmo.
28 Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is counted wise. When he shuts his lips, he is thought to be discerning.
Até o tolo, quando está calado, é considerado como sábio; [e] quem fecha seus lábios, como de bom senso.
