1 Now the feast of unleavened bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching.
aparañca kiṇvaśūnyapūpōtsavasya kāla upasthitē
2 The chief priests and the scribes sought how they might put him to death, for they feared the people.
pradhānayājakā adhyāyakāśca yathā taṁ hantuṁ śaknuvanti tathōpāyām acēṣṭanta kintu lōkēbhyō bibhyuḥ|
3 Satan entered into Judah, who was also called Iscariot, who was counted with the twelve.
ētastin samayē dvādaśaśiṣyēṣu gaṇita īṣkariyōtīyarūḍhimān yō yihūdāstasyāntaḥkaraṇaṁ śaitānāśritatvāt
4 He went away and talked with the chief priests and captains about how he might deliver him to them.
sa gatvā yathā yīśuṁ tēṣāṁ karēṣu samarpayituṁ śaknōti tathā mantraṇāṁ pradhānayājakaiḥ sēnāpatibhiśca saha cakāra|
5 They were glad, and agreed to give him money.
tēna tē tuṣṭāstasmai mudrāṁ dātuṁ paṇaṁ cakruḥ|
6 He consented and sought an opportunity to deliver him to them in the absence of the multitude.
tataḥ sōṅgīkr̥tya yathā lōkānāmagōcarē taṁ parakarēṣu samarpayituṁ śaknōti tathāvakāśaṁ cēṣṭitumārēbhē|
7 The day of unleavened bread came, on which the Passover must be sacrificed.
atha kiṇvaśūnyapūpōtmavadinē, arthāt yasmin dinē nistārōtsavasya mēṣō hantavyastasmin dinē
8 Yeshua sent Peter and Yochanan, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”
yīśuḥ pitaraṁ yōhanañcāhūya jagāda, yuvāṁ gatvāsmākaṁ bhōjanārthaṁ nistārōtsavasya dravyāṇyāsādayataṁ|
9 They said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare?”
tadā tau papracchatuḥ kucāsādayāvō bhavataḥ kēcchā?
10 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him into the house which he enters.
tadā sōvādīt, nagarē praviṣṭē kaścijjalakumbhamādāya yuvāṁ sākṣāt kariṣyati sa yannivēśanaṁ praviśati yuvāmapi tannivēśanaṁ tatpaścāditvā nivēśanapatim iti vākyaṁ vadataṁ,
11 Tell the master of the house, ‘The Rabbi says to you, “Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”’
yatrāhaṁ nistārōtsavasya bhōjyaṁ śiṣyaiḥ sārddhaṁ bhōktuṁ śaknōmi sātithiśālā kutra? kathāmimāṁ prabhustvāṁ pr̥cchati|
12 He will show you a large, furnished upper room. Make preparations there.”
tataḥ sa janō dvitīyaprakōṣṭhīyam ēkaṁ śastaṁ kōṣṭhaṁ darśayiṣyati tatra bhōjyamāsādayataṁ|
13 They went, found things as Yeshua had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
tatastau gatvā tadvākyānusārēṇa sarvvaṁ dr̥ṣdvā tatra nistārōtsavīyaṁ bhōjyamāsādayāmāsatuḥ|
14 When the hour had come, he sat down with the twelve emissaries.
atha kāla upasthitē yīśu rdvādaśabhiḥ prēritaiḥ saha bhōktumupaviśya kathitavān
15 He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer,
mama duḥkhabhōgāt pūrvvaṁ yubhābhiḥ saha nistārōtsavasyaitasya bhōjyaṁ bhōktuṁ mayātivāñchā kr̥tā|
16 for I tell you, I will no longer by any means eat of it until it is fulfilled in God’s Kingdom.”
yuṣmān vadāmi, yāvatkālam īśvararājyē bhōjanaṁ na kariṣyē tāvatkālam idaṁ na bhōkṣyē|
17 He received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, “Take this and share it amongst yourselves,
tadā sa pānapātramādāya īśvarasya guṇān kīrttayitvā tēbhyō datvāvadat, idaṁ gr̥hlīta yūyaṁ vibhajya pivata|
18 for I tell you, I will not drink at all again from the fruit of the vine, until God’s Kingdom comes.”
yuṣmān vadāmi yāvatkālam īśvararājatvasya saṁsthāpanaṁ na bhavati tāvad drākṣāphalarasaṁ na pāsyāmi|
19 He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.”
tataḥ pūpaṁ gr̥hītvā īśvaraguṇān kīrttayitvā bhaṅktā tēbhyō datvāvadat, yuṣmadarthaṁ samarpitaṁ yanmama vapustadidaṁ, ētat karmma mama smaraṇārthaṁ kurudhvaṁ|
20 Likewise, he took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
atha bhōjanāntē tādr̥śaṁ pātraṁ gr̥hītvāvadat, yuṣmatkr̥tē pātitaṁ yanmama raktaṁ tēna nirṇītanavaniyamarūpaṁ pānapātramidaṁ|
21 But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table.
paśyata yō māṁ parakarēṣu samarpayiṣyati sa mayā saha bhōjanāsana upaviśati|
22 The Son of Man indeed goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man through whom he is betrayed!”
yathā nirūpitamāstē tadanusārēṇā manuṣyaputrasya gati rbhaviṣyati kintu yastaṁ parakarēṣu samarpayiṣyati tasya santāpō bhaviṣyati|
23 They began to question amongst themselves which of them it was who would do this thing.
tadā tēṣāṁ kō jana ētat karmma kariṣyati tat tē parasparaṁ praṣṭumārēbhirē|
24 A dispute also arose amongst them, which of them was considered to be greatest.
aparaṁ tēṣāṁ kō janaḥ śrēṣṭhatvēna gaṇayiṣyatē, atrārthē tēṣāṁ vivādōbhavat|
25 He said to them, “The kings of the nations lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’
asmāt kāraṇāt sōvadat, anyadēśīyānāṁ rājānaḥ prajānāmupari prabhutvaṁ kurvvanti dāruṇaśāsanaṁ kr̥tvāpi tē bhūpatitvēna vikhyātā bhavanti ca|
26 But not so with you. Rather, the one who is greater amongst you, let him become as the younger, and one who is governing, as one who serves.
kintu yuṣmākaṁ tathā na bhaviṣyati, yō yuṣmākaṁ śrēṣṭhō bhaviṣyati sa kaniṣṭhavad bhavatu, yaśca mukhyō bhaviṣyati sa sēvakavadbhavatu|
27 For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Isn’t it he who sits at the table? But I am amongst you as one who serves.
bhōjanōpaviṣṭaparicārakayōḥ kaḥ śrēṣṭhaḥ? yō bhōjanāyōpaviśati sa kiṁ śrēṣṭhō na bhavati? kintu yuṣmākaṁ madhyē'haṁ paricāraka̮ivāsmi|
28 “But you are those who have continued with me in my trials.
aparañca yuyaṁ mama parīkṣākālē prathamamārabhya mayā saha sthitā
29 I confer on you a kingdom, even as my Father conferred on me,
ētatkāraṇāt pitrā yathā madarthaṁ rājyamēkaṁ nirūpitaṁ tathāhamapi yuṣmadarthaṁ rājyaṁ nirūpayāmi|
30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom. You will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
tasmān mama rājyē bhōjanāsanē ca bhōjanapānē kariṣyadhvē siṁhāsanēṣūpaviśya cēsrāyēlīyānāṁ dvādaśavaṁśānāṁ vicāraṁ kariṣyadhvē|
31 The Lord said, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have all of you, that he might sift you as wheat,
aparaṁ prabhuruvāca, hē śimōn paśya tita̮unā dhānyānīva yuṣmān śaitān cālayitum aicchat,
32 but I prayed for you, that your faith wouldn’t fail. You, when once you have turned again, establish your brothers.”
kintu tava viśvāsasya lōpō yathā na bhavati ētat tvadarthaṁ prārthitaṁ mayā, tvanmanasi parivarttitē ca bhrātr̥ṇāṁ manāṁsi sthirīkuru|
33 He said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!”
tadā sōvadat, hē prabhōhaṁ tvayā sārddhaṁ kārāṁ mr̥tiñca yātuṁ majjitōsmi|
34 He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will by no means crow today until you deny that you know me three times.”
tataḥ sa uvāca, hē pitara tvāṁ vadāmi, adya kukkuṭaravāt pūrvvaṁ tvaṁ matparicayaṁ vāratrayam apahvōṣyasē|
35 He said to them, “When I sent you out without purse, bag, and sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.”
aparaṁ sa papraccha, yadā mudrāsampuṭaṁ khādyapātraṁ pādukāñca vinā yuṣmān prāhiṇavaṁ tadā yuṣmākaṁ kasyāpi nyūnatāsīt? tē prōcuḥ kasyāpi na|
36 Then he said to them, “But now, whoever has a purse, let him take it, and likewise a bag. Whoever has none, let him sell his cloak, and buy a sword.
tadā sōvadat kintvidānīṁ mudrāsampuṭaṁ khādyapātraṁ vā yasyāsti tēna tadgrahītavyaṁ, yasya ca kr̥pāṇō nāsti tēna svavastraṁ vikrīya sa krētavyaḥ|
37 For I tell you that this which is written must still be fulfilled in me: ‘He was counted with transgressors.’ For that which concerns me is being fulfilled.”
yatō yuṣmānahaṁ vadāmi, aparādhijanaiḥ sārddhaṁ gaṇitaḥ sa bhaviṣyati| idaṁ yacchāstrīyaṁ vacanaṁ likhitamasti tanmayi phaliṣyati yatō mama sambandhīyaṁ sarvvaṁ sētsyati|
38 They said, “Lord, behold, here are two swords.” He said to them, “That is enough.”
tadā tē prōcuḥ prabhō paśya imau kr̥pāṇau| tataḥ sōvadad ētau yathēṣṭau|
39 He came out and went, as his custom was, to the Mount of Olives. His disciples also followed him.
atha sa tasmādvahi rgatvā svācārānusārēṇa jaitunanāmādriṁ jagāma śiṣyāśca tatpaścād yayuḥ|
40 When he was at the place, he said to them, “Pray that you don’t enter into temptation.”
tatrōpasthāya sa tānuvāca, yathā parīkṣāyāṁ na patatha tadarthaṁ prārthayadhvaṁ|
41 He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and he knelt down and prayed,
paścāt sa tasmād ēkaśarakṣēpād bahi rgatvā jānunī pātayitvā ētat prārthayāñcakrē,
42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
hē pita ryadi bhavān sammanyatē tarhi kaṁsamēnaṁ mamāntikād dūraya kintu madicchānurūpaṁ na tvadicchānurūpaṁ bhavatu|
43 An angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.
tadā tasmai śaktiṁ dātuṁ svargīyadūtō darśanaṁ dadau|
44 Being in agony, he prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.
paścāt sōtyantaṁ yātanayā vyākulō bhūtvā punardr̥ḍhaṁ prārthayāñcakrē, tasmād br̥hacchōṇitabindava iva tasya svēdabindavaḥ pr̥thivyāṁ patitumārēbhirē|
45 When he rose up from his prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief,
atha prārthanāta utthāya śiṣyāṇāṁ samīpamētya tān manōduḥkhinō nidritān dr̥ṣṭvāvadat
46 and said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
kutō nidrātha? parīkṣāyām apatanārthaṁ prarthayadhvaṁ|
47 While he was still speaking, a crowd appeared. He who was called Judah, one of the twelve, was leading them. He came near to Yeshua to kiss him.
ētatkathāyāḥ kathanakālē dvādaśaśiṣyāṇāṁ madhyē gaṇitō yihūdānāmā janatāsahitastēṣām agrē calitvā yīśōścumbanārthaṁ tadantikam āyayau|
48 But Yeshua said to him, “Judah, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”
tadā yīśuruvāca, hē yihūdā kiṁ cumbanēna manuṣyaputraṁ parakarēṣu samarpayasi?
49 When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said to him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”
tadā yadyad ghaṭiṣyatē tadanumāya saṅgibhiruktaṁ, hē prabhō vayaṁ ki khaṅgēna ghātayiṣyāmaḥ?
50 A certain one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
tata ēkaḥ karavālēnāhatya pradhānayājakasya dāsasya dakṣiṇaṁ karṇaṁ cicchēda|
51 But Yeshua answered, “Let me at least do this”—and he touched his ear and healed him.
adhūnā nivarttasva ityuktvā yīśustasya śrutiṁ spr̥ṣṭvā svasyaṁ cakāra|
52 Yeshua said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and elders, who had come against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?
paścād yīśuḥ samīpasthān pradhānayājakān mandirasya sēnāpatīn prācīnāṁśca jagāda, yūyaṁ kr̥pāṇān yaṣṭīṁśca gr̥hītvā māṁ kiṁ cōraṁ dharttumāyātāḥ?
53 When I was with you in the temple daily, you didn’t stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”
yadāhaṁ yuṣmābhiḥ saha pratidinaṁ mandirē'tiṣṭhaṁ tadā māṁ dharttaṁ na pravr̥ttāḥ, kintvidānīṁ yuṣmākaṁ samayōndhakārasya cādhipatyamasti|
54 They seized him and led him away, and brought him into the high priest’s house. But Peter followed from a distance.
atha tē taṁ dhr̥tvā mahāyājakasya nivēśanaṁ ninyuḥ| tataḥ pitarō dūrē dūrē paścāditvā
55 When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat amongst them.
br̥hatkōṣṭhasya madhyē yatrāgniṁ jvālayitvā lōkāḥ samētyōpaviṣṭāstatra taiḥ sārddham upavivēśa|
56 A certain servant girl saw him as he sat in the light, and looking intently at him, said, “This man also was with him.”
atha vahnisannidhau samupavēśakālē kāciddāsī manō niviśya taṁ nirīkṣyāvadat pumānayaṁ tasya saṅgē'sthāt|
57 He denied Yeshua, saying, “Woman, I don’t know him.”
kintu sa tad apahnutyāvādīt hē nāri tamahaṁ na paricinōmi|
58 After a little while someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them!” But Peter answered, “Man, I am not!”
kṣaṇāntarē'nyajanastaṁ dr̥ṣṭvābravīt tvamapi tēṣāṁ nikarasyaikajanōsi| pitaraḥ pratyuvāca hē nara nāhamasmi|
59 After about one hour passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Truly this man also was with him, for he is a Galilean!”
tataḥ sārddhadaṇḍadvayāt paraṁ punaranyō janō niścitya babhāṣē, ēṣa tasya saṅgīti satyaṁ yatōyaṁ gālīlīyō lōkaḥ|
60 But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
tadā pitara uvāca hē nara tvaṁ yad vadami tadahaṁ bōddhuṁ na śaknōmi, iti vākyē kathitamātrē kukkuṭō rurāva|
61 The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the Lord’s word, how he said to him, “Before the rooster crows you will deny me three times.”
tadā prabhuṇā vyādhuṭya pitarē nirīkṣitē kr̥kavākuravāt pūrvvaṁ māṁ trirapahnōṣyasē iti pūrvvōktaṁ tasya vākyaṁ pitaraḥ smr̥tvā
62 He went out, and wept bitterly.
bahirgatvā mahākhēdēna cakranda|
63 The men who held Yeshua mocked him and beat him.
tadā yai ryīśurdhr̥tastē tamupahasya praharttumārēbhirē|
64 Having blindfolded him, they struck him on the face and asked him, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck you?”
vastrēṇa tasya dr̥śau baddhvā kapōlē capēṭāghātaṁ kr̥tvā papracchuḥ, kastē kapōlē capēṭāghātaṁ kr̥tavāna? gaṇayitvā tad vada|
65 They spoke many other things against him, insulting him.
tadanyat tadviruddhaṁ bahunindāvākyaṁ vaktumārēbhirē|
66 As soon as it was day, the assembly of the elders of the people were gathered together, both chief priests and scribes, and they led him away into their council, saying,
atha prabhātē sati lōkaprāñcaḥ pradhānayājakā adhyāpakāśca sabhāṁ kr̥tvā madhyēsabhaṁ yīśumānīya papracchuḥ, tvam abhiṣikatōsi na vāsmān vada|
67 “If you are the Messiah, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you won’t believe,
sa pratyuvāca, mayā tasminnuktē'pi yūyaṁ na viśvasiṣyatha|
68 and if I ask, you will in no way answer me or let me go.
kasmiṁścidvākyē yuṣmān pr̥ṣṭē'pi māṁ na taduttaraṁ vakṣyatha na māṁ tyakṣyatha ca|
69 From now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
kintvitaḥ paraṁ manujasutaḥ sarvvaśaktimata īśvarasya dakṣiṇē pārśvē samupavēkṣyati|
70 They all said, “Are you then the Son of God?” He said to them, “You say it, because I am.”
tatastē papracchuḥ, rtiha tvamīśvarasya putraḥ? sa kathayāmāsa, yūyaṁ yathārthaṁ vadatha sa ēvāhaṁ|
71 They said, “Why do we need any more witness? For we ourselves have heard from his own mouth!”
tadā tē sarvvē kathayāmāsuḥ, rtiha sākṣyē'nsasmin asmākaṁ kiṁ prayōjanaṁ? asya svamukhādēva sākṣyaṁ prāptam|
