Luke 1
1 Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled amongst us,
わたしたちの間で実現したさまざまな事柄について，
2 even as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word delivered them to us,
初めからの目撃証人またみ言葉の奉仕者であった者たちがわたしたちに伝えたとおりに，その物語を順序正しくまとめようと，すでに多くの人が手を着けてきましたが，
3 it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus;
わたしもすべての成り立ちを初めからつぶさにたどりましたので，テオフィロス閣下，あなたに順序正しく書いて差し上げるのが良いと思いました。
4 that you might know the certainty concerning the things in which you were instructed.
それは，学ばれた事柄が確実なものであることを知っていただくためです。
5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zechariah, of the priestly division of Abijah. He had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisheva.
ユダヤの王ヘロデの時代に，アビヤの祭司組の者で，ザカリアという名の祭司がいた。彼にはアロンの娘である妻がいて，名をエリザベツといった。
6 They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.
二人とも神の前に正しい者で，主のすべてのおきてと法令の内を非の打ちどころなく歩んでいた。
7 But they had no child, because Elisheva was barren, and they both were well advanced in years.
しかし彼らには子供がなかった。エリザベツが不妊であり，二人ともかなり年を取っていたからである。
8 Now while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his division
さて，彼が自分の組の順番に従って神の前で祭司職を務めていたときのこと，
9 according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
祭司職の習慣に従って彼が主の聖所に入って香をたくことになった。
10 The whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.
民の群衆はみな，香の時刻に外で祈っていた。
11 An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
主のみ使いが彼に現われて，香の祭壇の右側に立っていた。
12 Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.
ザカリアはそれを見て動転し，恐れにとらわれた。
13 But the angel said to him, “Don’t be afraid, Zechariah, because your request has been heard. Your wife, Elisheva, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Yochanan.
しかしみ使いは彼に言った，「恐れてはいけない，ザカリアよ，あなたの願いは聞き入れられたからだ。すなわち，あなたの妻エリザベツは，あなたに男の子を産むだろう。そして，あなたはその名をヨハネと呼ぶことになる。
14 You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.
あなたには歓喜と喜びとがあり，多くの人がその誕生を喜ぶだろう。
15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.
彼は主のみ前で大いなる者となり，ぶどう酒や酔わせる飲み物を飲まないからだ。彼は母の胎にいる時から聖霊に満たされるだろう。
16 He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.
彼は多くのイスラエルの子らを，その神なる主に立ち返らせるだろう。
17 He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to prepare a people prepared for the Lord.”
彼はエリヤの霊と力のうちにそのみ前を行くだろう。『父たちの心を子供たちに立ち返らせ』，不従順な者たちを義人の知恵に立ち返らせ，準備のできた民を主のために備えるためだ」。
18 Zechariah said to the angel, “How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”
ザカリアはみ使いに言った，「どうしてそのことを信用できるでしょうか。わたしは老人ですし，わたしの妻もかなり年を取っているからです」。
19 The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.
み使いは彼に答えた，「わたしはガブリエル，神のみ前に立つ者だ。わたしはあなたに語るため，この良いたよりをあなたにもたらすために遣わされたのだ。
20 Behold, you will be silent and not able to speak until the day that these things will happen, because you didn’t believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”
見よ，これらの事が起きるその日まで，あなたは声が出ず，ものが言えなくなるだろう。しかるべき時に実現するわたしのこれらの言葉を信じなかったからだ」。
21 The people were waiting for Zechariah, and they marvelled that he delayed in the temple.
民はザカリアを待っていたが，彼が聖所で手間取っているのを不思議に思っていた。
22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple. He continued making signs to them, and remained mute.
外に出て来た時，彼は彼らに話すことができなかった。そこで彼らは，彼が聖所で幻を見たのだと分かった。彼は彼らに手まねを続けるだけで，口がきけないままであった。
23 When the days of his service were fulfilled, he departed to his house.
その奉仕の日々が満ちた時，彼は自分の家に帰って行った。
24 After these days Elisheva his wife conceived, and she hid herself five months, saying,
こうした日々ののち，彼の妻エリザベツは子を宿し，五か月の間引きこもって，こう言った，
25 “Thus has the Lord done to me in the days in which he looked at me, to take away my reproach amongst men.”
「主はこのごろ，人々の中での恥辱を取り去るためにわたしに目を向けてくださり，わたしに対してこのようにしてくださいました」。
26 Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
さて，六か月目に，み使いガブリエルが，神からガリラヤのナザレという名の町に遣わされた。
27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of David’s house. The virgin’s name was Miriam.
ダビデの家のヨセフという名の男と結婚を誓っていた，一人の処女のもとに遣わされたのである。その処女の名前はマリアといった。
28 Having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, you highly favoured one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you amongst women!”
み使いは入って来ると彼女に言った，「喜べ，大いに恵まれた者よ。主があなたと共におられる。女たちの中であなたは幸いな人だ！」
29 But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be.
しかし，彼を見た時，彼女はその言葉にひどく動転し，いったいこれは何のあいさつなのだろうと考えていた。
30 The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Miriam, for you have found favour with God.
み使いは彼女に言った，「恐れてはいけない，マリアよ，あなたは神からの恵みを見いだしたからだ。
31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and shall name him ‘Yeshua.’
見よ，あなたは胎内に子を宿し，男の子を産むだろう。そして，その名を『イエス』と呼ぶことになる。
32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,
彼は偉大になり，いと高き方の子と呼ばれるだろう。主なる神は彼にその父ダビデの王座をお与えになるだろう。
33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom.” (aiōn g165)
そして彼はヤコブの家を永久に支配することになる。彼の王国には終わりがないだろう」。 (aiōn g165)
34 Miriam said to the angel, “How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?”
マリアはみ使いに言った，「どうしてそのようなことが起こり得るのでしょうか。わたしは処女ですのに」。
35 The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God.
み使いは彼女に答えた，「聖霊があなたの上に臨み，いと高き方の力があなたを影で覆うだろう。それゆえにも，あなたから生まれる聖なる者は神の子と呼ばれることになる。
36 Behold, Elisheva your relative also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
見よ，あなたの親族エリザベツも老齢で男の子を宿している。不妊と呼ばれていた彼女が六か月目になっている。
37 For nothing spoken by God is impossible.”
神によって語られたことはすべてが可能なのだ」。
38 Miriam said, “Behold, the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.
マリアは言った，「ご覧ください，主の女召使いです。あなたのお言葉どおりのことがわたしに起きますように」。 み使いは彼女から去って行った。
39 Miriam arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah,
そのころ，マリアは立ち上がり，急いで山岳地帯に向かい，ユダのある町に行き，
40 and entered into the house of Zechariah and greeted Elisheva.
ザカリアの家に入ってエリザベツにあいさつした。
41 When Elisheva heard Miriam’s greeting, the baby leapt in her womb; and Elisheva was filled with the Holy Spirit.
エリザベツがマリアのあいさつを聞いた時，その胎内で赤子が飛び跳ねて，エリザベツは聖霊に満たされた。
42 She called out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
彼女は大声で叫んでこう言った，「女たちの中であなたは幸いな人，あなたの胎の実も幸いなもの！
43 Why am I so favoured, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
わたしはなぜこれほど恵まれているのでしょう，わたしの主の母がわたしのもとに来てくださるとは。
44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came into my ears, the baby leapt in my womb for joy!
ご覧なさい，あなたのあいさつの声がわたしの耳に入った時，わたしの胎内の赤子は喜んで飛び跳ねたのです！
45 Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfilment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord!”
信じた女は幸いです。主から語られた事柄は実現するからです！」
46 Miriam said, “My soul magnifies the Lord.
マリアは言った， 「わたしの魂は主をたたえます。
47 My spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour,
わたしの霊は，わたしの救い主なる神を喜びます。
48 for he has looked at the humble state of his servant. For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed.
卑しい身分の女召使いに目をとめてくださったからです。ご覧ください，今からのち，あらゆる世代の人々がわたしを幸いな者と呼ぶでしょう。
49 For he who is mighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name.
強力な方がわたしのために大いなる事柄をなさったからです。そのみ名は神聖です。
50 His mercy is for generations and generations on those who fear him.
そのあわれみは世々にわたり，その方を恐れる人々の上に臨みます。
51 He has shown strength with his arm. He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
主はそのみ腕で力を示されました。心の想いの高慢な者たちを散らされました。
52 He has put down princes from their thrones, and has exalted the lowly.
君主たちをその座から引き降ろされました。そして身分の低い者たちを高くされました。
53 He has filled the hungry with good things. He has sent the rich away empty.
飢えた者たちを数々の良い物で満たされました。富んだ者たちを何も持たせないで帰らされました。
54 He has given help to Israel, his servant, that he might remember mercy,
あわれみを忘れないために，ご自分の召使いイスラエルに助けを与えられました。
わたしたちの父祖たちに，アブラハムとその子孫に対して永久に語られたとおりに」。 (aiōn g165)
56 Miriam stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her house.
マリアは彼女のもとに三か月ほど滞在し，それから自分の家に帰って行った。
57 Now the time that Elisheva should give birth was fulfilled, and she gave birth to a son.
さて，エリザベツの出産する時が満ちて，彼女は男の子を産んだ。
58 Her neighbours and her relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her, and they rejoiced with her.
彼女の隣人や親族は，主が彼女のためにそのあわれみを増してくださったと聞いて，彼女と共に喜んだ。
59 On the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zechariah, after the name of his father.
八日目のこと，人々が幼子に割礼を施すためにやって来て，彼を父の名にならってザカリアと呼ぼうとした。
60 His mother answered, “Not so; but he will be called Yochanan.”
その母は答えた，「それはいけません，ヨハネと呼ばれるのです」。
61 They said to her, “There is no one amongst your relatives who is called by this name.”
人々は彼女に言った，「あなたの親族の中ではその名によって呼ばれている者は一人もいない」。
62 They made signs to his father, what he would have him called.
人々はその父に向かって，その子を何と呼びたいのかと手まねをした。
63 He asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, “His name is Yochanan.” They all marvelled.
彼は書き板を求め，「その名はヨハネ」と書いた。 人々はみな驚いた。
64 His mouth was opened immediately and his tongue freed, and he spoke, blessing God.
すぐに彼の口は開き，舌は解かれ，語り出して神を賛美した。
65 Fear came on all who lived around them, and all these sayings were talked about throughout all the hill country of Judea.
近くに住む人々すべての上に恐れが臨み，これらのすべての話がユダヤの山岳地帯のあらゆる所でうわさされた。
66 All who heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, “What then will this child be?” The hand of the Lord was with him.
それを聞いた者たちはみな，それを自分の心に留めて，「この子はいったい何になるのだろう」と言った。主の手が彼と共にあった。
67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,
その父ザカリアは，聖霊に満たされ，預言してこう言った。
68 “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people;
「イスラエルの神なる主が賛美されるように。その民に目を向けて請け戻しをされたからだ。
69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David
そして，その召使いダビデの家に，わたしたちのための救いの角を起こされた。
（古くからその聖なる預言者たちの口によって語られたとおりに。） (aiōn g165)
71 salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us;
わたしたちの敵からの救い，またわたしたちを憎むすべての者の手からの救いを。
72 to show mercy towards our fathers, to remember his holy covenant,
わたしたちの父祖たちにあわれみを示し，その聖なる契約を忘れないために。
73 the oath which he swore to Abraham our father,
わたしたちの父祖アブラハムに立てられた誓い，
74 to grant to us that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, should serve him without fear,
それがわたしたちにもたらすことは，わたしたちが敵の手から解き放たれ，恐れることなくその方に仕えること，
75 in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.
わたしたちの命の日々の限り，神聖さと義のうちに，そのみ前で仕えることなのだ。
76 And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways,
そして子供よ，お前はいと高き方の預言者と呼ばれるだろう。お前は主の面前を行き，その道を整え，
77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the remission of their sins,
その民に罪の許しによる救いの知識を与えることになるからだ。
78 because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the dawn from on high will visit us,
それは，わたしたちの神の優しいあわれみによる。そのあわれみによって，夜明けが高い所からわたしたちに訪れ，
79 to shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death; to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
闇と死の陰に座る者たちの上に輝き，わたしたちの足を平和の道に導くだろう」。
80 The child was growing and becoming strong in spirit, and was in the desert until the day of his public appearance to Israel.
幼子は成長し，霊において強くなってゆき，イスラエルに対する公の出現の日まで寂しい所にいた。
